NARA

Thanks for the kind welcome! I am actually a couple of floors downstairs from you in 3200 with the social media folks, so I'd love to meet you. If you have any inclination to become a regular Wikipedia contributor, let me know, because I would be happy to help you get started. (One of my goals for this summer is to get some NARA staff editing regularly, or at least comfortable to make the occasional edit.) One effort I would like to start is described here. Based on your comments about the citation numbers, it sounds like you might be interested. :-) Dominic·t 13:40, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

DC Meetup, July 29

DC Meetup 21 - Who should come? You should. Really.
DC MEETUP 21 is July 29! This meet up will involve Wikipedians from the area as well as Wiki-loving GLAM professionals. See you Friday! SarahStierch (talk) 16:32, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
You'll be missed at the NARA event, but here's your alternative if you want to hang out. :-) (Also, one of the editors who you got an image for, Kumioko is a DC local, so you two really should meet at some point!) Let me know if you think we can convert anyone to our cause to act as the Stills expert in your place on the 6th. I'm going to be holding a Wikipedia tutorial next week for staff in the computer labs (details soon), so if you can convince anyone to come... Dominic·t 18:26, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

Are you still taking requests for pictures

I was just wondering if you were still taking requests for images. --Kumioko (talk) 16:42, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for taking on my request, I greatly appreciate it. If you don't mind, I've left a question for you back at the requests page. Thanks again, Connormah (talk) 23:53, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Slightly urgent question/request

Hi - someone has nommed File:Paul K. Carlton portrait.jpg for deletion on the basis that we can't verify that it is a USAF photo. I'm almost 100% sure it is, but I was wondering if you could somehow verify it (surely it may be held in the NARA, or you can somehow tell it is?) Thanks, Connormah (talk) 16:53, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

I'll try to look for it tomorrow, still away from the stacks for most of the day tomorrow. If I can get a chance, it will have to be towards the evening and no promises. If not, I'll take a look Monday morning. BcNARApix (talk) 03:04, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
No problem, thanks a bunch for the help. Connormah (talk) 19:47, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
Couldn't find anything online. I'll hold tight, take your time. Connormah (talk) 18:39, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
Was unexpectedly out of the office Mon-Wed, going to take a look this morning. Sorry. BcNARApix (talk) 14:41, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks! If you could do a scan, that'd be great. I'll comment again on the deletion request at Commons. Thanks again. – Connormah (talk) 19:07, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
If you feel like starting on my request at the requests page, could you first look for anything better than the current image at John W. Roberts? Surely there must be some color or anything better of quality than what is currently in the article... – Connormah (talk) 19:11, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
I also found an Alt portrait for Carlton as well, an uncovered 3/4s shot, would that be of any use? I can scan the two along with the Roberts one (if I find anything, that is) probably by the end of the day tomorrow (got another thing I have to finish before I leave today). As you probably can tell, my schedule is a wee bit sporadic and I'm sort of juggling about 3 projects right now. BcNARApix (talk) 19:26, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
Sure, that works for me. Roberts retired 2 years after Carlton, I'd guess that there should be something for him. You could also do the alternate Carlton shot, if you'd like. I think our priority for these shots should be to look first for the ones that are missing portraits, then move on to the low quality ones. I'll play around with the list on the requests page. Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it. (actually, do you think you could just search for Roberts today; the scanning can wait) – Connormah (talk) 19:32, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
I've placed an asterisk on those without portraits on my list. – Connormah (talk) 20:42, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
Well, that would be my thought, which is why I was asking if it was really needed for me to do the scans of Carlton since there seemed to be a fairly decent upload up there and all that was really needed was the citation information. Again, I'm sorry but I've just plain run out of time today: I'm out the door as soon as I log off for a doctors appointment and wanted to note this before I headed out. My word, I will do a bunch tomorrow morning. BcNARApix (talk) 21:07, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
Actually, you can scratch off the re-scan for Carlton, if you could just do the alternate and whatever you can find for Roberts tomorrow, that's be more than fine. If you have additional time, if you could search for Orval R. Cook as well (another I've searched for ages for), it'd be great, but it can all wait. – Connormah (talk) 01:19, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks again...left another note on my talk. – Connormah (talk) 01:43, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
Saw the uploads on Commons. Thanks a bunch! – Connormah (talk) 02:40, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
Cool, just had posted the links over on your talk. Sorry, was fixing the citations a little, and then I got wordy when I was sending you the links, haha. No problem, glad I could help. BcNARApix (talk) 02:45, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
No problem. Thanks for the write up and explanation, very informative. Another question on my talk for you (probably my last for the night) – Connormah (talk) 02:52, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
Too lazy to add this name to the list (I'm on iPad) - but can you also look for Maurice A. Preston tomorrow, along with the next couple on the list? Also left another note for you below. Talk to you tomorrow and thanks in advance. – Connormah (talk) 04:11, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
Added him to the list BTW. Also emailed the USAF website with the Roberts, Cook and Carlton portrait links. Thanks. – Connormah (talk) 03:52, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
I've been searching for alternate sources for the generals, as previously mentioned, for example, I was able to get one for John W. Vogt from the funeral home that was in charge of his services and supposedly they will be sending me a higher res copy of the pic. I'm also in contact with some others and hope to get some pics out. Thanks for all the help you've given again, hopefully this helps to tone down my colossal request. Wish I was within reasonable distance from the Archives to help you, but I guess I can't have everything. – Connormah (talk) 00:00, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Unrelated question

Out of curiosity (I've looked and emailed for these too) - does the NARA also hold official portraits for Secretaries of Defense? We're missing Frank Carlucci's and Warren Christopher, and William J. Perry's is of low quality. This can wait until we're finished with the Generals, though. – Connormah (talk) 04:36, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

I think we do have portraits of the occasional cabinet member here and there, but no specific collection of SecDef portraits, at least that I know of besides what might be scattered into the military collections - more than likely they would be held by the Presidential library that the secretary served under. I will double check though when I get a chance, particularly for the names you mentioned. BcNARApix (talk) 13:51, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
Like I said, these can wait; I think the generals may be more of a priority now. Thanks in advance, as always. – Connormah (talk) 15:48, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Upload

Thanks for re-scanning. I think I've added enough categories to that picture, so once we have a better scan we should be good to go. - PKM (talk) 23:47, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Original Barnstar
For general awesomeness in responding to requests for original scans. Your help is really appreciated! :-) Dominic·t 15:00, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Rescan?

Hey Ben. :-) I almost forgot about this, so it's old now, but can you take a look at the request on the bottom of this page and see what you think? Thanks! Dominic·t 18:44, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Are you leaving NARA

I just noticed you blanked your userpage. Are you leaving NARA or just not taking image requests anymore? In any case thanks for getting the Medal of Honor recipient images. --Kumioko (talk) 19:24, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

The latter; it's complicated. Bottom line, unfortunately I will be unable to help with the GLAM/NARA project for an indefinite period. I'm glad I could help the little bit that I did. Best wishes, BcNARApix (talk) 19:28, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
No problem. Frankly I figured it was only a matter of time. I appreciate all the help though. Are you going to be at the meetup in October? --Kumioko (talk) 19:31, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
If I can still use my own time as I want, I'll be there. ;-) BcNARApix (talk) 19:39, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
