Admin coaching: Dispute scenario

[edit]

Maybe Wikipedia:Lamest edit wars ever would be a good place to start. ;) We could ask these types of questions:

  1. If you were involved in this conflict, what would you have done to resolve the matter as civilly as possible?
  2. If you had been called upon to help resolve the conflict, what do you think would have been the best course of action?
  3. Do you think this could have been prevented? If so, how?

These are all opinion questions, but they would help ViolinGirl acquire a certain feel for potential situations where admin intervention is needed. Cheers, Sango123 (talk) 20:49, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Banes!

[edit]

I sincerely couldn't help but to eavesdrop on your talk with my friend Mongo ;-) I must tell you I love the design that Sango made of your user page. Someday, he and I will have to meet to talk about web page design! I couldn't help but to notice, however, a tiny flaw on its design, which you can only observe if you're using IE: the userboxes table diplayed cut in half (check out what I mean here). Therefore, I've taken the liberty of making some adjustments and enhancements to its code; kinda hard to find something to improve, as Sango had already did a magnificent job. I've tested it both in IE and Firefox, and as far as I can tell, it displays correctly at both browsers. I've placed the final version at my Sandbox; if you like it, please feel free to copy the code directly into your user page.

I must tell you I'm kinda intrigued at Esperanza, and I've decided to ask you (and you too, Dave, should you happen to read this!) exactly what is that group about. Care to share your insight with me? Take good care, Banes! Cheers, -- Phædriel *whistle* 00:15, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Banes! First of all, thanks so much for the lovely gift and the kind words - if half the people at Wikipedia are as nice as you, Mongo, Sango and Aaron, I foresee myself a long season here. I'm quite in a hurry now, but I decided to drop you a line and see what I could do with your request regarding your userpage. I didn't quite understand whether you preferred a more blueish color only at the margins or at the background too, so I made two versions: this one for margins only and this other one for a full solid blue background (it hurts my eyes!). Pick any of them, or let me know if you want me to modify any of them further. Btw, Esperanza strikes me as a great initiative - perhaps someday I'll add myself to that list. I promise to write you back as soon as I can. Kisses! -- Phædriel *whistle* 13:35, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

3RR

[edit]
Enjoy your laurels...ViolinGirl

Ok, thanks for helping out there. I thought that the 3RR didn't apply, but I wasn't sure. Thanks. (Did we decide on Sunday yet?) --ViolinGirl 13:32, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've been really busy lately, so I'm not sure. If we can do it sometime near 12:30/1:00pm (my time, which is what, 7 hours difference your time?) then that would be great, since I'm going to be busy morning (church) and in the afternoon (friends), so...--ViolinGirl 16:41, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PS All of the above were on Sunday. :) --ViolinGirl 16:41, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

REALLY?! You're a Christian, too? How thrilling! :) Wow. I'm really excited now! And, yeah...I'm learning about RL. Talk more about it later, I have to go right now, but I wanted to leave a little note...--ViolinGirl 17:00, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah. Okay, so let's see...22:30-23:00 sounds good on my side, but it doesn't have to really be just whenever I can do it...(although, I'm not sure what other time would work well.) And, yeah, if that's 18:00 UTC time then, so it is. (Although I can't promise being exactly ON TIME, per say.) And, I wouldn't ask you to work on this early in the morning like that. Have your "day of rest" at least until the evening! :) What's Sango123 thinking? Haven't checked over there in a while...(I want to be surprised on Sunday!)
And, yeah, I'm so happy to realize that you are a Christian. I should have scrolled down in your user page, but didn't...I became a Christian when I was six. Is that why you were home-schooled? That's why I am. Regarding NPOV, I agree, although I'm not going to say something I don't believe...so I'm editing more neutral topics, usually. :)
Anyway...I think that's about it. Except, IRC channel is not working and I was up until 8:45PM (which is late for me, as you know) working on it with a ChatZilla helper, and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. They thought maybe it had to do with the channel? Anyway, I think the web-version of #wikipedia-en-vandalism is going to have to be it for now, until I get that figured out. Closing out for now...--ViolinGirl 01:17, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, that's great. I'm not sure now what's going on with Sango regarding the time. We'll see. And congratulations on your edit count! WOOT! and, opps, I typed alt+o, so I'm signed out, but this really is me... :) ViolinGirl
Yeah, that's totally fine. Depending on when (my family and) I eat, I'll be on sometime around 13:00 on, so whenever you get there is fine. Sounds good!--ViolinGirl 15:52, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't tried IRC today, yet. I've been having so many problems with it...on today, off tomorrow, you know? Are you on now?--ViolinGirl 17:08, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. If it still works out for you in about an hour or less, then let's keep it there. I thought my mom was going to make me eat then :) but she decided to do it earlier. Ok? So see you after lunch...--ViolinGirl 17:12, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
On-On or on Wikipedia, or on IRC? :) Either way, see you later, Cheers!--ViolinGirl 17:17, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hope you're checking here. I'm on #wikipedia-esperanza, but I don't think I'm actually on. No messages coming across, yeah? Oh, so I was just reset. Don't know how long that's going to keep up. What did it say when I got reset?--ViolinGirl 17:59, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much for the coaching today. I learned a lot, and it was so fun. (Sango's papercut...LOL! I was talking to a non-wiki friend and she was like, "Oh." HA HA HA! Come on, RL, get WL! ;) ) Be talking to you tomorrow, I'm up to late...again!--ViolinGirl 01:54, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, so how's Monday looking to you, staying up that late last night? ;) Sounds like fun, 20Q and stuff. Couple of church families were getting together, plus a baptism later in the evening, so RL took precidence again. But, yeah, yesterday was a ball! Thanks! What's a good time for you next?--ViolinGirl 12:33, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Today was my violin lesson, so between that and other things I was busy today, too...although it's already Tuesday for you. Well, my mom said she didn't want me "scheduling a chat time" every week, so probably the weekend isn't the best. Unfortunately, with the time difference doesn't work out too well. I'm on almost every single night from 8:00P-8:30P MY TIME, and that's it every day (except Sundays, obviously...day of rest!), although I get on once in a while to check messages. But obviously, that is an INSANE hour to wake up your time, especailly since you're so undisciplined to stay up so late every night, LOL...so, anyway, I'm not sure what's going to happen. We'll see what Sango says. TTYL--ViolinGirl 23:34, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Admin coaching

[edit]

Hi, Banes. How are you doing (RL)? Are you going to kill me because of not doing much editing lately? :P A string ensemble I'm in at LeMoyne College just started up, so I'll probably be on even less, boo hoo! :) (We're playing Edvard Grieg's Holdberg Suite...very fun! Anyway, WL: I just was over at Sango's talk page asking her about admin coaching. I know you're busy on Sunday, and I have no clue what day would be good for me besides that, so I'm kind of waiting on her for direction. Maybe just talk paging would be good this week...let me know.--ViolinGirl 12:58, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ciao! Glad things are going well for you in RL...the film shoot sounds very neat! Hope I don't get envious...;) Are you on vacation? I don't want you to be bothered about me if you're on vacation. If you checked out Sango's message on my talk page (and it doesn't bother me in the least if you do) it looks like she can probably do it on Sunday...although I don't have insurance on paper cuts for administrators, so I'm not sure I can afford it! ;) Anyway, let's leave it at this: Sunday afternoon unless one or the other of us can't make it, including me, because I have to check with my mom. She said something about not wanting me to get online every Sunday to "chat", so...if it's okay with you (and Sango) I'd like to leave it at, unless I let you know otherwise, Sunday afternoon. Okay? Nice to hear from you again...--ViolinGirl 20:53, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Just noticed this. can only roll eyes in disgust at faux humility...why, you even write about yourself in the third person on your userpage!! BTW, I'm being a horrible editor tonight...all usertalk pages...I kneel and ask your forgiveness...--ViolinGirl 00:56, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please come to the Puerto Rico page and tell that anon user why his edit was reverted. I've started a discussion and urged him to discuss it, but he jsut keeps reverting.Gator (talk) 16:40, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A scrumptious cookie, just for you!

I wanted to thank you warmly for reverting the vandalism on my userpage yesterday so speedily. I hope that one day I may be able to return the favour! For now, enjoy the cookie! JDH Owens

Adminship

[edit]

Hi Banes,

A (belated) Happy New Year to you!

Sorry for my late reply, but I was busy getting married ... :-)

Yes, thanks, I am certainly still interested in being nominated for adminship ... sometime after this coming weekend will suit me fine.

Kind Regards, Elf-friend 13:23, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Erm ... she probably wouldn't have married me otherwise ;-) (and there was a lot of organizing to do). Anyway, thanks for your congratulations :-) ... and around 6 Feb would suit me fine!

Important

[edit]

Banes...I'm sorry to say that I won't be able to talk on Sunday. I've been thinking through real life recently, and I believe that Wikipedia is not what God wants me doing right now. As explained here, this doesn't mean I won't ever be on again, but unfortunately, it means I'll have to back out of admin coaching. I can't tell you have badly I feel, after all the work you've invested in me. Please don't take it personally. I'm counting on you to understand, since we're both Christians. Still friends?--ViolinGirl 13:55, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I guess this isn't a big RL thing, but it seemed kind of big to me, and I was really worried about how you would feel. I knew you would be on now, so I had to see how you would take it. Thank you for still being my friend. Maybe once in a while I'll just drop you a note and see how you're doing, okay? Thanks so much.--ViolinGirl 20:26, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
For being such a great friend, through it all. --ViolinGirl 20:48, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
<--I'm not just giving you that because I'm "leaving", either, Daniel. I appreciate your kindness, first to me (when we first "met"), and during admin coaching (for which makes me feel the worst about "leaving"), and during this. I really value your WikiFriendship. Who knows? Maybe if I don't accomplish my Big Dream by that time I'll be mature enough spiritually to take the vandalism content, and be back? Remember...this doesn't mean I'm leaving leaving. I'm still going to be studying for my CLEP exam (scheduled January 30, wisdom teeth out the next day, can you believe? My mom kept it from me this long!!!!), so I'm sure I'll be finding typos and wikifying while I study. What more can I say? Thanks for everything. (How did your trip go?) I changed a minor thing on your userpage...you can revert it if you want, but I don't want you to feel responsible for keeping it on your page. I don't know what you believe about spoken blessings but, may God bless you with Wisdom from on high, and power to accomplish everything that He wants you to. *shiver* Cheers!--ViolinGirl 20:48, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And how did the snoop find my blog? (and which one?) ;) Well, I don't want you to feel responsible for leaving my name up there. It was very kind of you to put up there in the first place, but I completely understand if you ever feel like removing it. I also want to say that I appreciate your understanding. Some people don't/didn't understand at first, and I'm very glad you do understand. I also understand your reasoning. (groans at using the word "understand" one more time AND using too many parenthesis) (I just don't think I a mature enough to handle the content of the vandalism at this time.) It would be great to see you at my blog sometime (whichever one it is? ;)). I'm glad you had a good trip. I was thinking about you, and felt bad this happened while you were away. (Until I remembered you were away, I was on my tin ear...Why isn't Banes responding??????!! :))
Thankfully I noticed your (at first) unsigned comment on my page before saving this one. BS you were thinking equalled "Back Soon"? or what? Clarification is needed. ;)--ViolinGirl 21:14, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
BANES! Stop messaging me while I'm messaging you! I have to keep adding (and then previewing) my messages!!!! The new sig is nice, how is it in memory of me? Cheers (before you do yet another comment!!! :D)--ViolinGirl 21:14, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, now I'm doing it to you...isn't there a way to make text show up over links? You should make some text show up, like maybe a favorite quote or "Talk to me" or something like that, when someone hovers their coursor over your links. That would be a cool username, but I'm not sure if it's possible.--ViolinGirl 21:16, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, okay. *prepares to give away general identity, reminds herself never to do it again*...Click here, and mine is the 8th blog post from the top right now. It's my more personal blog. So, probably this will fall under the category of "Blogs Banes Considers Stupid". :D I see about the in memory thing (ha ha, I feel dead!). Thank you. Oh, well, you know me better than to think that the barnstar would mean what you first thought it meant. Don't you keep up on the barnstars? :) I think that's it for now. (We've been on for an hour, can you believe? Thank goodness it's a weekend!)--ViolinGirl 21:30, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
fixed formatting in above paragraph.--ViolinGirl 21:30, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See what I mean? Oh well. That was the missing link between Wikipedia and the other un-named site. If you know me from that other unnamed site, you still can't find me here unless you realize that I'm a Christian Hedonist who's a violinist. :) Hi, Daniel Hagen, nice to meet you. ;) Yeah, I agree with the political blog business, unless they write it in a way I can understand with, and ONLY if I agree with them. :D GET TO BED. (and yeah, talk on the blog, whatever, I don't care). But do get to bed. Monday is a Monday and you can't change that. Cheers!--ViolinGirl 21:43, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hm? No on the timetable? Explanation is required.--ViolinGirl 21:53, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  1. I like the other spellings for words. I automattically think of "gray" as "grey", "favorite" "favourite", etc. I don't know why.
  2. Well, my timetable is different. I'll explain in your sandbox, just so you get this and hopefully get to bed before Monday!! but...cheers for tonight...--ViolinGirl 21:53, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Almost literally ROFL! LOL! Finished up my online stuff and went down to dinner, you know? So, I get back on, thinking, "Maybe I'll get some good writing work done today (my side hobby, but since it takes me so long, I have to really sit down and plan time for it)". So, I get on to see if anyone else is going to complain/whatever to me before I start writing. I CAN'T BELIEVE it was keeping you awake. For pity's sake, how interesting can my schooling be? LOL...*rolls eyes at Banes' insanity You better not reply! ;) Mommy's watching!--ViolinGirl 23:36, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You confused me SO much! I was like, "Wow! Talk about vandalism, now someone's gone through everything that links to Akkadian Empire and changed it to Boring! WEIRD!!!" LOL. Thanks for making me smile during a very...boring topic of study! ROFL...--ViolinGirl 17:43, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

LOL! Banes, I think you need to study! :D Take me as an example. That's what I was (fruitlessly) trying to do before your little prank. (I saw your poetry. 2 hours???) See ya' later...<puts nose to the grindstone> --ViolinGirl 17:54, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
BANES! I hereby name you insane! I know now why you changed your username: BaneZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz....what happens when you spend too much time online.--ViolinGirl 17:54, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Good. I will perish if I see a reply before tomorrow morning. Anyway, here's how you do it:

<small>smalltext</small> comes out smalltext

superscripttext comes out superscripttext

subscripttext comes out subscripttext

andthesmalleryouwantyourtext, you just keep adding <small>'s and </small>'s just like you would any other HTML tag. Ciao!--ViolinGirl 22:11, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh. Well, HTML is the coolest thing since...HTML! :D You should learn some, sometime. It's so easy to pick up. Main principles: Commands are enclosed in <'s and >'s: Example: To make something bold (other than ''' :D) you do <b>, type your text, and then type </b>. Then, you just have to learn the other commands:

<i>text</i> is text

<a href="http://www.websitename.com">text you want to appear</a> doesn't work on wikipedia, but that's what you type to get to appear in normal websites

<blink>TEXT</blink> doesn't work on wikipedia, either, but it works in other HTML websites.

<font color="hotpink">TEXT</font> is TEXT You can fool around with the colors instead of "hotpink", of course...blue, red, green, etc...to find out more commands like that, just click on edit a page, and see what they type to make it happen. That's how I've picked up my level-1 HTML...LOL! The Official Snoop saw that you're making friends with Weien. Nice! Cheers!--ViolinGirl 12:20, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PS Glad to see that you got Gryffindor. He'll be much profited by your coaching. Best wishes!--ViolinGirl 12:21, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem (sometimes I think that a pac-man remake where you eat typos instead of those white dots would be just the thing for a Wikipedian having a bad day, but anyway)! Turns out that "Terry Prattchett" still refers to "Terry Pratchett" though, so link-wise it was alright. And yes, I am a fan of his writing (and "Terry Pratchett books in general" is a great way to say it, I daresay XD)--ever since I was introduced to the Discworld series about a year ago, I've been wishing that the local library had the entire series (of course, if they did... byebye life ^_^).

And it certainly is unfortunate that ViolinGirl will be doing less Wikipedia--my head still spins when I see "November 4, 2005: Joined Wikipedia..." @_@ (and it's only more mind-boggling when you think about the wiki-prowess she already had a month or two ago). Then again, I'm like "And this Banes fellow has only been here since July and he's already coaching people!?" Awed. ^^ Oh, and I saw your poem over at Sango's--let's just say that I'll definitely be keeping an eye on that sub-page. "no, not 'Floral'"--oh man, gotta love the execution there ;). Anyway, nice to (finally, can I say?) meet you! Weien 08:37, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Grr, Tom pushed his way forward in the line. Let's see if I can get through this time, here's what I wrote once already:
NO! Don't stop. Just realize I can't always come over and thank you every time... If you knew how...uh, cheering it was to have it vandalized, you wouldn't have even thought of that. (I just don't want to take too much of your time, having you vandalize. :P Maybe I should add a message at the top so serious vandal whacker's won't accidentally block you and I would have to intercede... XD) Re: poetry, thank you, that was nice of you to say. Re: barnstars, LOL...I knew you would someday! Let's see...I think that's it for now...--ViolinGirl 18:34, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
PS Oh yeah, and the suspenders...LOL!!!!
(Fine about everything you said.) Your RFA?? Not going on now, right? (Hey, Banes: WP:SIG. :D)--ViolinGirl 18:45, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, well...if you can see I'm going to miss it (your RFA), let me know. (You probably don't need me to nominate you, do you? I'd still be happy, but whatever you want to do...maybe not since I'm sort of backing out...) If there's one person I would like to vote for, it would be you. (That wouldn't be asking for votes, would it? Since I asked you to ask me?) And as to the vandalism: I just cleaned up two red links, their mother's won't be dissapointed in them...scrounges around in trash to see if she can find them... Ah, yes, here they are: Abi-Eshuh and Ammi-Ditana...pretty puny, huh?--ViolinGirl 18:58, 24 January 2006 (UTC) now I forgot to sign, he, he![reply]

You've really got a name out there, I can't wait for you to accept! *shiver* As to your editing my "latest articles"...for what, article-space edits? :P See you around...today's my teaching day, so it will be less...much to the benefit of my CLEP exam, hmmm...anyway...--ViolinGirl 12:34, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I'm new to Wikipedia and i can see you are 'Happy to help new Wikipedians'!

Could you please take a look at the article i have just majorly edited: denotation.

Just want to make sure i've followed the codes and conventions (if you like) of a Wiki?

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks!

Thanks for your swift reply on my Talk Page, i will probably loose the backgrounds as a) you think i should and b) the tutorial states some users are offended by them!

Again, thanks for your reply.

Never more than idly considered it. Yes. Yes I would, but do you think I'm ready?

In case you don't want to go back to my talk page, the questions were: Might I ask why you are not an admin? Would you like to be one? Would you like me to nominate you, or would you rather somebody else did? ;)

And on the flipside, why aren't you? ➨ REDVERS 20:20, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

<impersonal template> Sango123 would like to nominate you to be an administrator. Please visit Wikipedia:Requests for adminship to see what this process entails, and then contact Sango123 to accept or decline the nomination. A page has been created for your nomination at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Banes 2. If you accept the nomination, you must formally state your acceptance and answer the questions on that page. Your acceptance would look better if you signed it :-) NoSeptember talk 15:31, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel, you're on your way to one of the most supported RfA's in the history of Wikipedia...make no mistake. I voted for you even before I got your message...it must have been providence or something that I happened to check back to your RfA page right after you accepted...(four minutes after you accepted :D) Take a look at this: [1] Best wishes for your RfA (although I know you won't need them). --ViolinGirl 15:37, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
PS...I was actually trembling as I voted, afraid someone was going to sneak in ahead of me!!! :P
You're not supposed to beat the nominator, VG. ;) Sango123 (talk) 15:51, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User page design

[edit]

Hi Banes, Sango123, Phaedriel: the page doesn't look correctly for those whose browsers have font size increased. You should be able to see what I mean by increasing the font text size in your browser. I recommend you try using font-relative specifications for the height for the divs. Quarl (talk) 2006-01-25 05:32Z
