Help with copyedit of Cassandra case
Hey Baffle gab (and not babble gab). I was wondering if I could get your opinion on capitals. The article Cassandra case was created with a lowercase c in case. Cassandra Case was capitalized as written in bold in the lead. I changed it to match the title of the article. However, I think the c in case should be capitalized. The thing is I am not aware of a specific rule that matches my thinking. What do you think? Note, the article is not fully copyedited yet. PopularOutcasttalk2me! 19:03, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
- I did finish copyediting the article now but still would like your opinion. PopularOutcasttalk2me! 22:37, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
- Hi P.O.; because 'case' is an ordinary noun, I think it should be lower case in this context. If any English-language sources contradict this I'd defer to the way they cover it. In fact, I'm not sure any English sources would use the term 'Cassandra case' to describe it; anyway I know you're not working on content but I've found two English-language sources; The Grauniad (overturn) and BBC (conviction). So I'm good for something, anyway! ;D Cheers, Baffle gab1978 23:17, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
- Cool, thanks! I didn't even try to look for English sources because I am, apparently, an idiot. LOL. And, yes, it wouldn't be described that way in English so it stays as is. The more perplexing thing is that the person, Cassandra, is transgender and the court documents refer to her by her given male name but the Spanish Wikipedia article doesn't mention anything about it. So, I didn't. Just chatting here but I would think an article about the court case (and not about the person) would point that out. Then again, all the Spanish news articles I read refer to her by Cassandra. So, meh. PopularOutcasttalk2me! 23:43, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
- Yes I noticed the transgender status but didn't think it important. I didn't check the Spanish sources, I don't do Spanish and translation engines are usually a joke (but better than they used to be!). Meh indeed. :) Baffle gab1978 00:16, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
- Baffling indeed but my first language was Spanish, second was English. Problem is I never formally studied much Spanish and I hardly speak it or heard it spoken anymore. But, I can get the gist of stuff with the translation engines and figure out what I don't know. I've tried doing that with other languages and it doesn't work so I understand how hard it can be. I feel comfortable doing the type of work needed for that copyedit but I would not feel comfortable writing an article on Spanish Wikipedia or even translating a whole one into English (though I pretty much checked the whole translation from Spanish on the Cassandra one). Again thanks for your help and camaraderie. PopularOutcasttalk2me! 01:42, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
- No worries; thanks for your work here too. :) I wouldn't be comfortable translating from other languages either; knowing how subtle changes in English spelling, punctuation, etc. can change the meaning of a whole sentence, I daresay most of it would be gobbledygook! :D Cheers, Baffle gab1978 01:58, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
- Based on this search for "Miranda case", I think a lower-case "c" is appropriate. – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:28, 23 January 2019 (UTC)

C/E of Adele Spitzeder
Hi there. Thanks for fulfilling my request. Quick question: You changed "actress" to "actor" within all instances of the word in the article. I was not aware that "actor" is the preferred style even for female biographies since the category is also called "actresses". Could you point me to the relevant MoS section so I can study up on that? Regards SoWhy 21:27, 9 February 2019 (UTC)
- Hi SoWhy; no problem. I changed 'actress' to 'actor' to comply with the gender-neutral guideline, though I appreciate this isn't policy and I won't object if you wish to change it back. I can't comment on category-based policies because that isn't my area of operation. It's an interesting article and I enjoyed copy-editing it; good luck with your planned GA nom. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 00:39, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for the link. I actually hadn't known about that part of the guideline. Regards SoWhy 14:41, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
- No worries and thanks for asking; the MOS is complex and I'm often running across minor points to consider. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 04:17, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

Wears the juice
Hi Baffle gab. I stumbled across your page after seeing the edits you'd made to the BGR-34 page and spotted your "Wears the juice" infobox. Hadn't heard that phrase before or the story behind it, it's hilarious! I may have to start using it myself. PeaBrainC (talk) 11:42, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
- Hi PeaBrainC, I'm glad you like the infobox; feel free to use it if you wish. It's located at User:Baffle gab1978/uxb; just cut/paste {{Subst:User:Baffle gab1978/uxb}} to copy to code over to the page where you want it. Cheers and happy editing, Baffle☿gab 12:04, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

It's been a long time
Hello man, I don't know if you remember me, but we worked on the Malaspina page a few months back, just wanted to say hi and ask for advice. I have been dedicated a little bit of my time to translating several pages on a family of wood sculptors from Val Gardena called Moroder, I have all the articles I worked on listed on my user page. I'll cut to the chase man since I translated several different pages and they are all quite small i was wondering if you could check them out, im not really an expert but would it be better to keep them separate or merge them into a super page? kisses Spaicol (talk) 12:08, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Spaicol; I'll have a look at the articles tonight. If the subjects are separately notable they should probably have their own pages. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 00:46, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Spaicol:, I've just looked through the articles. Because the subjects are notable by themselves, they should have their own pages. You ould link them together with a navigational template similar to Template:Malaspina. I'm sorry for my late reply. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 04:32, 30 March 2019 (UTC)
That's a good idea, also, no worries about the late reply, thanks for ur help homieSpaicol (talk) 09:47, 30 March 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for copyedit climate sensitivity
Hello!
Thanks for the copyedit, I think the article now reads quite a bit better. Unavoidably with a technical article like this, the ce introduced a few mistakes to the article. I think those mistakes were one of the most useful things of the copy-edit, as they made clear that my initial wording was not only ugly, but also led to confusion. My rewording those points should make it easier to pass the GAN :). Femke Nijsse (talk) 09:39, 24 April 2019 (UTC)
- No worries; I'm sorry about my errors but I'm glad they helped improve the article. Sometimes I misinterpret things. Best wishes for your planned GA nom; it's an interesting article despite the scary mathematics markup! :) Cheers, Baffle☿gab 09:50, 24 April 2019 (UTC)
Succession to Muhammad
Hi Baffle gab1978, thank you for helping to copy-edit the page Succession to Muhammad! I know that it's a rather long article and really appreciate the time that you took to help copy-edit it. Thanks again! Best, Snowsky Mountain (talk) 23:48, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
- No problem, I found it an interesting read from a historical perspective. Cheers, and good luck with your planned GA nomination. Baffle☿gab 23:54, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
April Copyediting Blitz
Do you want help reviewing work for this? A21sauce (talk) 12:17, 27 April 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you for offering to help, @A21sauce:, reviewers are always in short supply here. After looking at some of your work for the April blitz, however, I think you need to gain more experience with copy-editing Wikipedia articles before reviewing other editors' work. I am always open to a second opinion, though, so courtesy-pinging @Miniapolis: for comment. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 21:43, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
- Oooh, okay, ouch!--A21sauce (talk) 16:28, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for the offer, A21sauce, and we appreciate your enthusiasm (and help with the blitz). We all try to run while we're learning to walk; one of my early copyedits was a 13,000-word article on an aircraft carrier. I have the uneasy feeling that it may have been a GAN or even an FAC, but the requester was gracious and gave me my first barnstar :-). After over nine years of copyediting here, I'm still learning stuff. Hope you can help during the May drive, and you're always welcome on the requests page. Have fun and all the best, Miniapolis 20:53, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks and if you or Baffle☿gab can give me some pointers on what I needed to do more in the last drive, that`d be of help. For example, did I not cut enough on some of the longer ones? Otherwise kind of at a loss.--A21sauce (talk) 16:01, 1 May 2019 (UTC)
- I understand, A12Sauce. I'll comment on your talk page a bit later. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 18:25, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

when in doubt ask Baffle
Hello my friend, sorry to bother you but I need your help once again. I have started the translation of the Malaspina Family related articles after a long pause writing about other stuff and stumbled upon a problem: I included in the Template:Malaspina all of the castles owned by the family that have Italian articles ready to be translated, the problem I have with them lies within their article name. I would name the Articles: "Castle of ...", the problem is that some other example articles I found keep the Italian name even for Castle (castello) and of (di), so I need your guidance to choose a standard on how to title them. I wish you well Spaicol (talk) 02:42, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Spaicol, I hope you're well. I took a brief look at the template; I think it will be fine to use the Italian name in English Wikipedia; there doesn't seem to be a preference either way—see List of castles in Italy, which uses both, though some linked articles are redirects. It may be worthwhile asking at Wikiproject Italy but I don't think that Wikiproject is very active, so perhaps the help desk would be a more useful (and quicker) venue. I hope that's useful. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 03:44, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
As always thank you for your help, I am doing fine thanks, i hope you are good too, have a good day friend. Spaicol (talk) 16:20, 18 May 2019 (UTC)

Coordinator election
Hi again, Baffle, and thanks for all your help during the drive. Would you be interested in standing for lead coordinator this time around? I'll gladly stay on as coordinator if needed (I popped the question again to Twofingered Typist), but feel strongly that the person who does the work should get the credit. All the best, Miniapolis 14:55, 1 June 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Miniapolis; thanks for your confidence but I don't think I'm cut out to be a leader... witness the recent spat Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Guild_of_Copy_Editors#An_article_I_copy_edited here. TT and CoolieCoolster also helped with the drive midnight updates. I'm also not as active at WP at this time of year. If nobody else wants to serve I'll consider it though, but I'm happy to remain a helper. :) Cheers, Baffle☿gab 23:18, 2 June 2019 (UTC)
Question
Why is that issue so important to you that you are striking? Thinker78 (talk) 19:49, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Thinker78: Because the WMF's unexplained actions in blocking Fram undermine community trust. Baffle☿gab 21:46, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
- I agree, even though that editor is no saint. Thinker78 (talk) 22:04, 12 June 2019 (UTC)

Copyedit
The heading needs copyedit. Thinker78 (talk) 02:15, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
@Thinker78: which heading needs copy-edit? Baffle☿gab 02:57, 22 June 2019 (UTC)- Got it; thanks. I was tired and pissed off. Baffle☿gab 02:59, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
I thought you would be interested in the RT article "Stop abuse by Big Tech: Wikipedia co-founder issues ‘Declaration of Digital Independence’", where the Fram issue is addressed. Thinker78 (talk) 23:57, 4 July 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for the link, Thinker78; it's an interesting piece but it doesn't really explain why the WP community is miffed about the Fram issue and I find the idea WP is "arguably one of the last bastions of internet freedom" laughable. On a separate note, is it bad that I want to edit the article to remove the excessive use of "that" and to fix the obvious style and punctuation errors? :) Cheers, Baffle☿gab 01:46, 5 July 2019 (UTC)
Valery E. Forbes
Hi @Baffle gab1978: How are you? I don't think we've spoken before. I reverted your edits on the Valery E. Forbes article. You unnecessarily removed information for the lede that defines exactly what she does, which I know the reader likes to know. There must have been a reason for it. I'm assuming your planning to move it to an infobox, or somewhere else. A persons position defines so much of their life, particularly when its an academic role where spend most of their life bevearing away on a single subject and I know they take pride in doing it and seen to be doing it. I know they see that as they are professor of that particular subject and provides a way for the reader to know as well. scope_creepTalk 09:17, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
- Hi @Baffle gab1978:. I have reverted. Too quick on the draw I think. It was beautifully written. scope_creepTalk 09:34, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
- Hi @Scope creep: thanks for your comments. I responded to the copy-edit template, which I removed because the article isn't suitable for c/e at this time. The article appeared like a C.V. / resumé so I removed some text that seemed promotional ("focused on understanding how, etc.) per WP:NOT. I also removed an unreferenced section per BLP. It probably was unnecessary to remove her job description though. It's fine to revert my edits; I won't challenge the reversion but the onus to provide references for the unreferenced text is now yours. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 01:58, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
- I have a ton of stuff on and it will take an age to get to that article. I think you should crack on. Thanks.scope_creepTalk 02:02, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Love Not Money
Hello! Your submission of Love Not Money at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! SL93 (talk) 02:51, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
Hi, thank you for fulfilling the c/e request! I'm sorry that I re-edited some parts you've already edited because I have to add other information. However, I think I have a few things to correct:
- It's a bit weird to call a agroforestry practice/system (who also happens to be a garden) a "style", considering that the emphasis in related literature is agroforestry
- This one's my fault: "which protects ants and soil fauna from direct sunshine, especially in the dry season." It's supposed to be only the soil fauna; there's no mention of "protecting ants from direct sunshine" in its reference. Sorry for putting the wrong context before.
That's all - thank you for the corrections, especially for the reduction of (overwhelming) redundancies and text ineffectiveness. :) Dhio-270599 13:08, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for your corrections, Dhio. That's fine; must admit I hadn't read the article through properly when I started the c/e. I'd say ants are actually soil fauna but I'm not an expert. I imagine ants wearing little sunhats and putting on sunblock now! :) Cheers, Baffle☿gab 20:21, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
- I just got the second point wrong. Realized that your point makes sense and re-checked the soil fauna reference. There is exactly a mention of ants in the reference, pp. 3-4, slightly unnoticeable. I hadn't realized that before... I'd probably delete the ant reference since the soil fauna one have concluded the points well. Thanks for making sense of that! Dhio-270599 00:35, 24 August 2019 (UTC)
- By the way, is it okay to separate par 2 in "Animals" to two? The context of soil fauna/insects isn't limited to Sundanese gardens, but pekarangans in general. Thank you! Dhio-270599 00:43, 24 August 2019 (UTC)
- That's fine, please go ahead, it's good to keep points separate. It's a short paragraph though, which is probably why I merged it. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 06:40, 24 August 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for completing the copy-edit :D Dhio-270599 04:15, 26 August 2019 (UTC)

- A bit of confirmation: I undid your edits on the last section before and it was accidental - now it's revised again to match your edits. Sorry for the carelessness. And again, thank you. Dhio-270599 13:40, 27 August 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Love Not Money
On 5 September 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Love Not Money, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that themes of British band Everything but the Girl's 1985 album Love Not Money include sexism, social and economic stratification, and The Troubles in Northern Ireland? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Love Not Money. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Love Not Money), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Pronouns
Thank you for beginning to copyedit Go Vacation! You've been doing a great job, but I have noticed that you changed "they have" to "s/he" has. Per Wikipedia:MOS#Gender-neutral language articles use of gender-neutral pronouns should be "internally consistent" and that "articles should not be changed from one style to another unless there is a substantial reason to do so." Cheers, TheAwesomeHwyh 04:35, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hi @TheAwesomeHwyh:; thanks for your message, I shall bear it in mind. I was making the pronouns agree with the subject nouns. There was a sentence or two in which the pronouns disagreed. We don't normally use "it" for people, so I chose "s/he". Modern use of "they" as a singular pronoun makes no sense to me. Pluralising the subject noun seems a more acceptable change; "they" then makes sense. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 20:06, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
- In this case, the subject noun could be made plural, but that isn't always the case. Personally, I prefer to use the singular "they" because it's more inclusive to non-binary people or other folx who fall outside of the gender binary. You are correct in that "it" should never be used as a neutral pronoun for (hopefully) obvious reasons. Also, not to go off on too much of a tangent but, the singular "they" isn't necessarily a modern construction, as according to the Wikipedia article on it it has been used as early as 1382 ("Eche on in þer craft ys wijs." - Wycliffe's Bible) and even in 1910 ("Nobody in their senses would give sixpence on the strength of a promissory note of the kind." - The Liberal Magazine). Anyways, thanks for coming to my TED Talk 🙃. TheAwesomeHwyh 02:18, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
- Fair enough; I'm not a POV pusher and I don't wish to interfere or debate the point so I'll leave it alone. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 02:41, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

Greenhouse gas emissions by Turkey
Hello Baffle gab1978 - perfect timing since I also have some time now. What do you think about if I shortened the first sentence in the hope of getting the word "megatonnes" into the google snippet on my iphone? Now it cuts off at "500". I could change the word "about" to "over" but not sure that would do it so should I write "Mt" linking to megatonnes?
Thank you for you very useful edits so far. I would like to ask your advice about links. I agree with your removal of some links to very well known general subjects such as "cows". But don't you think we should keep the links to more specialist subjects such as transport in Turkey? If so, as you no doubt noticed, the problem is that can lead to sentences repeating the word "Turkey" too may times. But if I make the link like this - transport - readers might think that is a link to a general article about transport and so not click even if they are interested in "transport in Turkey". Any ideas?Chidgk1 (talk) 05:57, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hi @Chidgk1:, thanks you for your comments. Firstly, I know nothing of the iPhone and Google snippets or how they render text, so I cannot comment. For the first sentence, how about : "Turkey emits about 500 megatonnes (Mt) CO2eq of greenhouse gases—about six tons per person—each year, most of which come from coal, cars, cows and construction."?
- Some of the links I removed seemed excessive but I see no problem with linking 'transport' to 'transport in Turkey'. I was working quickly but the link would be in context and hovering the mouse over it brings up a tooltip anyway. I think that's a small problem in comparison to improving the current state of the article though. :) Cheers, Baffle☿gab 19:57, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
Hello Baffle gab1978 - thank you very much for your copyediting. I have now found Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Linking#Link_clarity. Obviously I now need to go through and deal with the individual tags for "cite needed" and "expand section" but as you have no doubt copyedited many articles in your time any thoughts on what else I need to do before resubmitting it for GA would be very welcome. Have a nice weekend.Chidgk1 (talk) 05:11, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
- No problem; I think the article needs more development and some of the subsections are rather short, which makes the article look bare and undeveloped. Removing and/or merging some of the shorter subsecs would help. The lead should fully summarise the article; it could be expanded with information from the article body—three to four paragraphs is ideal for one this length. Text about mitigation, politics and co-benefits could be included. Maybe limit the quantity of images and/or use a gallery for those that are less important. I'm not saying that would bring the article to GA standard but it would help. I appreciate the article is a work in progress; well done for getting it this far. Good luck and cheers, Baffle☿gab 19:48, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
A request
Hi, Bafflegab1978, I have been working on the article India national football team at the Olympics for getting it a GA or FA status. But recently when nominated, was turned down due to certain issue, all other are resolved, remaining is Prose, some grammatical errors and few proper line constrcution to resolved. I am requesting you here as listed it for copy edit at WP:GOCE but hardly any copy editors may be visiting. I have seen you among few others are active here. So will you please consider the task. Thank you. Dey subrata (talk) 21:50, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hello @Dey subrata:; you listed the request only four days ago (21 Sept). You can't expect us to jump to it right away when there are still requests from August to deal with. Having said that, it's quite short so I might do it in a week or so if it's still around and not soporific like most sports articles. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 08:11, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
- Ok, take your time, I will wait and yes it short article, not so big. Thank you. Dey subrata (talk) 11:55, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
Thank you
Thank you for your excellent copyedit at the McMahon-Hussein Correspondence. If only McMahon had had your level of precision with words, perhaps the Middle East would have turned out differently... Onceinawhile (talk) 20:46, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
- No problem @Onceinawhile:; it's an interesting article that enlightened me on a thorny aspect of Middle-Eastern history. If only copy-editing could bring about world peace and universal suffrage! Wishing you the best of luck with your planned FA nomination. :) Cheers, Baffle☿gab 02:23, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
Hello. Twofingered Typist has made a copy edit for this article, but it still has some errors, can you try again for this article? Thanks you. 14.162.146.38 (talk) 01:58, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

GOCE Requests
Hey Baffle, you don't have to manually archive requests anymore. The bot has been approved and is currently running. Cheers! Bobbychan193 (talk) 06:02, 14 November 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks @Bobbychan193:, that's good news; I saw its approval on tne BAG but didn't realise it was running yet. There were a couple of problems with the last lot I archived anyway; one had been autosigned with no timestamp, one didn't have a standard code (GA not GAN) and the copy-editor used {{Completed}} rather than {{Done}}; so those would have needed fixing anyway. I'll re-activate the note atop the page. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 06:35, 14 November 2019 (UTC)
- Gotcha, just wasn't sure if you saw the talk page / Zhuyifei's ping. Thanks! Bobbychan193 (talk) 06:43, 14 November 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks; the BAG page has been on my watchlist for a while and I've followed it with interest. Now I have to get used to a whole new culture... things will never be the same! ;) Many thanks and Cheers, Baffle☿gab 06:53, 14 November 2019 (UTC)

Wolf Copyedit
Hello. Would you be able to copyedit wolf like you did lion? Thanks. LittleJerry (talk) 23:22, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
- Hi @LittleJerry:, sorry but I don't take direct requests and I'm on a wikibreak for a few days. Feel free to list it on the GOCE requests page (link above) and someone will get to it eventually. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 09:26, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
French?
Hi Waffle Gab. I suggest using an English tag because most editors probably don't know French. Thinker78 (talk) 19:14, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
- Mangetout, @Thinker78:, I'll do that dreckly. Baffle☿gab 02:19, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
Happy Holidays
Thank you for continuing to make Wikipedia the greatest project in the world. I hope you have an excellent holiday season. BabbaQ (talk) 11:07, 22 December 2019 (UTC) |
Happy Holidays!
Have a great rest of your holiday season! If you do not, then you should know that I have acquired a very particular set of skills on my time on Wikipedia. Skills that make me a nightmare for people who do not enjoy themselves. If you do not have a great time this year, I will find you... And I will block you.
But seriously, happy holidays. DarkKnight2149 21:59, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks DarkKnight, I promise to enjoy myself on pain of blockage. Because nobody wants a painful blockage, do they? :D Cheers and happy hols to you too. Baffle☿gab 22:04, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
