Generally, \oplus is used in things like this:

$a\oplus b\,$

or this:

$a_{1}\oplus \cdots \oplus a_{n}\,$

whereas \bigoplus is used in things like this:

$\bigoplus _{k=1}^{n}a_{k}\,$
