A tag has been placed on Brisbane Symphonic Band, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.  I dream of horses  If you reply here, please ping me by adding {{U|I dream of horses}} to your message  (talk to me) (My edits) @ 04:28, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Purpose of Wikipedia

[edit]

Hello! I noticed your comment on Talk:Brisbane Symphonic Band, and am afraid you may somewhat misunderstand the purpose of Wikipedia. I hoped to be able to clear that up a bit.

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Toward that end, we're not there to act as a webhost for anyone or anything to "document our proud history". There are some other venues for that, you might find some ideas on this page, but there are tons of web hosting providers if you'd like to have a history of your band on the Web. I'm afraid, however, that this is not the place. We require articles on any subject to be written from reliable sources that are independent of the subject in question. If substantial amounts of such reference material on something don't exist, we can't accept an article on that subject at all.

Also, we do not allow the promotion of anyone or anything. While I'm sure you're proud of your band, we require strict neutrality, so we'd not allow language such as "...long and colorful history...", "...sets the bar high in terms of musicality...", "...hospitable atmosphere...", etc. This is referred to as peacock phrasing, and isn't the type of language we'd allow in articles.

Hope that helps to clear things up. If you're interested in editing articles on bands, music, or anything else, you're certainly welcome to do that. I'm afraid, though, an article like the one you wrote previously just isn't one we can accept, and if any article on the band were possible, it would have to be supported by substantial amounts of the type of reference material I mentioned above. If you have any questions, feel free to ping me on my talk page (or ask here, I have it on watch and will see it). Seraphimblade Talk to me 04:45, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there,

Thanks for you note and for your guidance on Wikipedia. I understand the points that you are making, and can probably re-write the content to be more neutral (including references). Would I be able to to use the following existing Wikipedia page as guidance (https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Brisbane_Municipal_Concert_Band). This group are a fellow Brisbane Community Band.

Thank you.

There's some weaknesses in it (the "History" section isn't really cohesive, it seems just essentially a bullet list, and the referencing is a bit weak), but you could do worse. The other thing I might suggest, especially since this is your first time around at this, is to write the article as a draft rather than putting it immediately into article space. It still can't be promotional while a draft, but a lot of other requirements, such as having references and an assertion of significance right away, don't apply to drafts while in the draft stage. You could do that by creating the page at Draft:Brisbane Symphonic Band. That'll give you some breathing room to work on it. Once you've got it to where you think it's ready to move over to the encyclopedia, or if you have any questions, ping me on my talk page and I could take a look and help you put it in for that. Hi there,

Thank you for your help and guidance - it's very much appreciated. Creating a draft is a great suggestion, and I think that's what we'll do. But, I think I'll also do a lot of the writing offline too - just so that it meets the requirements before going up. That's probably the key bit that I didn't understand. I really appreciate your offer to have a look at it too.

Thanks,
