DYK for Pedro Dibut
On 20 February 2012, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Pedro Dibut, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Pedro Dibut was one of several white Cubans who played baseball in both the Negro leagues and the major leagues before integration? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Pedro Dibut. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

A barnstar for you!
The Original Barnstar | |
Your aid here directly led to the significant expansions of Joe McGinnity, Joe Kelley, Cy Seymour, Dan McGann, Jack Cronin, Billy Gilbert (baseball), Andrew Freedman, and 1902 Baltimore Orioles season, in addition to the creations of John Mahon (baseball) and Sydney Frank. Out of those ten articles, I expect 9 DYK's, 4 or 5 GA's, and maybe an FA or two.[1][2][3] – Muboshgu (talk) 23:55, 27 March 2012 (UTC) |
- Oh yeah, and the FL for List of New York Yankees owners and executives, the reason I was asking about "Calvin Chan". – Muboshgu (talk) 01:00, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
Giants
Do you happen to have any information on why several Negro League teams were called the "Giants"? Was it in reference to the New York Giants? Or maybe the Cuban Giants? Or maybe just that they liked the name "Giants"? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 03:54, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
- I read somewhere that for barnstorming teams, including "Giants" as part of their name may have been a sort of code to signal to fans that they were a Negro League team, since they often traveled to small towns to play white semipro teams. I'm not sure if that story is true, but it sounds plausible. BRMo (talk) 04:02, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
- I had made an assumption in my History of baseball team nicknames (which is pretty well documented but not totally), and figured it had to do with the New York Giants. The editor who deleted that comment said something similar to what you've just said. So either it's a common rumor, or it might have a kernel of truth. Or both. :) I wonder if anyone has really explored the topic for the Negro League teams. Some things are obvious, such as the Birmingham Black Barons, or the Atlanta Black Crackers (how's that for an oxymoron?) but a number of them seem kind of obscure. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 04:06, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
- I haven't read anything specifically on the topic of Negro league team names in general, but I would be happy to contribute if I happen to know something about the name of a particular team. BRMo (talk) 04:12, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
- I did most of the work on the article a couple of years ago, and it's been pretty much dormant since then, with occasional tweaks by other users. Just now I looked up the Pittsburgh Crawfords, which is kind of obscure until you know where it came from. The Kansas City Monarchs and the Homestead Grays were pretty famous. I wonder if there was any particular reason KC called themselves the Monarchs, beyond simply liking the name? The Grays were originally based on Homestead, PA. The Grays part is what I wonder about. Was it based on their uniforms? Or was there someone named Gray in the organization? I also wonder how far I should go with nicknames. Quite a few Negro League teams came and went. I'm thinking it would make more sense, at least initially, to focus on the "main" ones. Of course, I can simply add them without explanation, but I'd prefer to find the source, if possible. I wonder what would be the top 10 or 20 teams to focus on initially? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 04:19, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
- I believe the Grays were named for their uniform color. I remember that I read something once on the origin of the "Monarchs," but I don't remember where I saw it or what it said. (I'm going to guess that it was something from Buck O'Neil.) Let me check around and see if I can find any sources, and if I can find them, I'll just go ahead and add them to the article.BRMo (talk) 04:32, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
- If you can find something, that would be excellent. Just don't necessarily distract yourself from other projects. :) I should also hasten to point out that although I call it "my" article, because I wrote most of it, I don't claim "ownership" of it. :) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 04:36, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for April 16
Hi. When you recently edited Cuban-American Major League Clubs Series, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Washington Senators (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
