Welcome

[edit]

Hello, Ayepee99, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like this place and decide to stay.

Why can't I edit some particular pages?
Some pages that have been vandalized repeatedly are semi-protected, meaning that editing by new or unregistered users is prohibited through technical measures. If you have an account that is four days old and has made at least 10 edits, then you can bypass semi-protection and edit any semi-protected page. Some pages, such as highly visible templates, are fully-protected, meaning that only administrators can edit them. If this is not the case, you may have been blocked or your IP address caught up in a range block.
Where can I experiment with editing Wikipedia?
How do I create an article?
See how to create your first article, then use the Article Wizard to create one, and add references to the article as explained below.
How do I create citations?
  1. Do a search on Google or your preferred search engine for the subject of the Wikipedia article that you want to create a citation for.
  2. Find a website that supports the claim you are trying to find a citation for.
  3. In a new tab/window, go to the citation generator, click on the 'An arbitrary website' bubble, and fill out as many fields as you can about the website you just found.
  4. Click the 'Get reference wiki text' button.
  5. Highlight, and then copy (Ctrl+C or Apple+C), the resulting text (it will be something like <ref> {{cite web | .... }}</ref>, copy the whole thing).
  6. In the Wikipedia article, after the claim you found a citation for, paste (Ctrl+V or Apple+V) the text you copied.
  7. If the article does not have a References or Notes section (or the like), add this to the bottom of the page, but above the External Links section and the categories:
==References==
{{Reflist}}
What is a WikiProject, and how do I join one?
A WikiProject is a group of editors that are interested in improving the coverage of certain topics on Wikipedia. (See this page for a complete list of WikiProjects.) If you would like to help, add your username to the list that is on the bottom of the WikiProject page.

Your submission at Articles for creation

Thank you for your recent submission to Articles for Creation. Your article submission has been reviewed. Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. • Comment: Error: There was no comment detected! Please follow the instructions at Template:AfC comment.The topic is very much notable, we certainly should have an article about this boat. However, this draft is not at all written in the style of a Wikipedia article, but is written more like a magazine article. Phrases like "has been synonymous with adventure" and "The Cape had lived up to its reputation of being the “Cape of Storms”!" are simply not neutral, objective writing.
My suggestions:
  • See the standardised ship guidelines at Wikipedia:WikiProject Ships/Guidelines
  • Take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Ships#Featured_articles and get a feel for how a very good ship article is written (and you can always ask for advice at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Ships)
  • Carefully review your phrasing and language, and make sure every sentence is precise and concise, not "building a scene" or "adding emotion". An encyclopedia article is not an adventure tale, it's a simple and straightforward description of facts
  • Make sure you have a proper WP:Lead section. As it is right now you have more than a paragraph before you ever mention the ship, while a Wiki article has to specifically mention the topic in the first few words of an article.
I'm declining the current draft, but with the above changes made this will be a very valuable addition to both our coverage of Indian military history and of sailing ships. MatthewVanitas (talk) 14:30, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sir, saw your message. Have begun improving it. Will take some days as I usually do a few edits only per day. AshLin (talk) 17:53, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sir, is the article about the yacht or the voyage? They are two different things & deserve two different articles. The Trishna (yacht) need not be large while the Voyages of Trishna will be more detailed! AshLin (talk) 14:24, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ash, You suggest that we split it into two pages? Can you help split the existing page so that it will be easy to work on them then? I guess the pages will be linked together. Amreshwar Pratap Singh 06:24, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

  • Comment: Error: There was no comment detected! Please follow the instructions at Template:AfC comment. Hello Ayepee, really nice work on this article, it's a great contribution to our coverage of sailing ships. The article is in pretty good shape, though when you have time I suggest you address the WP:Linkrot; that is, turn some of the "bare URLs" into full citations so that in case the link goes dead in the future we still know specifically what book/article you were footnoting to so we can find it again. Great job, looking forward to seeing more from you! MatthewVanitas (talk) 15:08, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, MatthewVanitas. It is my first attempt at creating an article and your earlier advice on my first attempt was most helpful. As was the huge assistance provided by my old friend, AshLin. I hope to improve the article for greater 'reliability'. Amreshwar Pratap Singh 16:47, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
