Locomotive articles

[edit]

Hey Axver, great work on those locomotive articles. Just one thing, I moved A class to A class (locomotive) and the same for the Original A class - because just 'A class' is too broad for the thousands of articles we have on WP. Could you please tack (locomotive) onto the end of any more of these articles. Thanks! --james °o 13:22, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whangarei

[edit]

In your article Onerahi Branch you say Whangarei was a city in the early 1880s. I don't think so, & even today it is not technically one - it is run by a District Council. GrahamBould 12:36, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're right that it wasn't a city in the 1880s although it is classified as one today. — Bevanjlewis 11:50, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers, thanks for the clarification. I'm so used to thinking of it as a city that it didn't even register with me to think it may not have been in the 1880s! That was a bit silly of me. - Axver 23:37, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good Stuff

[edit]

Just discovered your articles on the lines (including to my surprise a very detailed one on my old stamping ground, the Okaihau Branch! Good work. Hopefully someone with some photographs might come to the party. Bevanjlewis 11:50, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! :) I hope some photographs turn up sometime soon. I'd love to write some more articles but I don't have the time right now with university. Might do a couple later this week though; it's Easter break and maybe I'll get some assignments out of the way early ... - Axver 23:37, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RE: NAL

[edit]

Heya there. I feel that the old one was rather hard to follow and the dates were all over the place -- i.e. something that happened in the 1880's was explained before explaining something that happened in the 1870's. However I do agree that the lists is not the best way -- perhaps it could be converted back to paragraphs later on and the old information added back in, as long as it is directly relevant to the NAL.

I've never heard of this service before, and I suspect that it's not operating at the moment anyhow - the route lists the "Old Auckland Railway Station" as the start of the journey, which to me seems a bit strange. --Lholden 02:38, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey sorry mate. No I was just quickly checking new articles and I saw linkless. I didn't occur to me that it may be incoming. Apologies. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 11:34, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi yes you are absolutely right I have checked and the article incoming is rather alienated. Good work. I should have trusted your judgment. I am not someone who usually edits wrongly. All the best, Ernst Stavro Blofeld 11:40, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey excellent work mate are you working on new articles to rid the article of its linkless tag. Great. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 12:12, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lovely stuff. Imagine if this could be done on every article. Wikipedia will soon have 10 million articles!! But I am still amazed how much important info is missing from wikipedia. Major articles are missing let alone minor ones. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 10:16, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I know too many red links makes wikipedia look poor when it should cover all knowledge known to man. It certainly has the potential to but it is WAAAAAY off at the moment. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 11:09, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

NZ geography "unreferenced" tags

Hey man, thanks for getting in touch about this. I guess you're right.. its hard to know at what level articles really start to need references. So yeah no prob.'s about removing the tag from other articles with very basic info. in future I'll discriminate a bit more ( the help section probably has more info about these sort of issues to so I'll have a look at that). Question

[edit]

Were you ever a member of a U2 fansite called "Eye of the Fly"? MelicansMatkin 10:52, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there - yes, you're quite right, I used to be active on Eye of the Fly. Goodness, that was a long time ago; I'd completely forgotten about it, to be honest! I take it you are/were (does it still exist?) a member? These days, I confine my activities to only a few websites; Interference is my site of choice for U2 discussion. - Axver 11:17, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I was on there under the name "Napkin". I thought your name sounded familiar (although I couldn't remember if it was from EotF or U2-vertigo-tour). I was actually hoping that you knew what had happened to it. One day I went on with no problems, and then the next I couldn't access it. It's been like that to this day, so I guess it got shut down because of all of the uploadings. You're actually the first old member I've been lucky enough to get in touch with. MelicansMatkin 15:50, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah right, I think I remember you - though it's certainly been a while. I'd stopped being active before EotF went down, so I'm honestly not sure what happened. I've a sneaking suspicion that the owner just got tired of running it/paying for webspace. One of my friends may know for sure; Daniel, bono_man2002 on Interference, no idea what he went by on EotF but I think he was around until the end and knew the webmaster. I'll have to ask him next time we catch up. I don't think the downloads would really be a factor, given how successful places like U2Torrents and U2Start are. And I was wondering if anybody had noticed I was the U2VT guy, heh. I like setlists; what can I say? - Axver 09:45, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
All I can say is that it's amazing that you've been able to find out so many of those setlists. It must have taken you absolute ages. You wouldn't believe how much of a help it's been though. MelicansMatkin 22:00, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's not easy, believe me! The early stuff is absolute hell. Even when you can find a newspaper review of a gig, you're lucky if half the song titles are remotely accurate. I think I finally managed to clear up what demos were recorded when, though! I know they're not strictly setlists, but I put it on U2VT anyway just to try to counter the misinformation floating around online. Setlists nowadays are dead easy though, with being able to listen to virtually every concert via someone's mobile phone streamed online. - Axver 12:37, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You've done a fantastic job with it. I imagine that Popmart must have been pretty easy to find though, seeing how they only switched songs four or five times the whole tour, =P. MelicansMatkin 15:49, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The First Time

[edit]

I was randomly browsing U2-vertigo-tour and I saw all of the entries for The First Time. I think that there was an occassion where Bono performed the song solo during the Zooropa recording sessions, which isn't listed. IIRC, it was on Spanish radio although I'm not sure what the date was. I have the clip on my computer, and it's definitely an early perfroamce before tha lbum came out. Bono explains in between verses about some of the lyrics, and some of the lyrics are pretty different. What I find most interesting is that he sings the song in a higher scale, a la Lemon. Would you like me to send you the file? MelicansMatkin (talk) 20:39, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have actually heard about the performance you mention; I understand Bono did it on Mexican radio at some point in November 1992 (i.e. when the band was there for four ZooTV concerts). I've been meaning to add it, to tell the truth, but it slipped my mind. Furthermore, I've never actually heard it for myself, so I would certainly appreciate a copy! I have the "e-mail this user" option enabled, but if that doesn't work for some reason, just let me know and I can leave my e-mail address. Thank you! - Axver (talk) 23:32, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So sorry for the delay; it took me a while to find the file. A couple of months ago my computer crashed and I lost all of my music. I was able to put everything that I had on my iPod back on to my computer, but all of the file names were changed for some reason. So, at long last, heres the file! I sure hope it's the right one... http://download.yousendit.com/0EFC7DD110C08C00 Enjoy! MelicansMatkin 18:26, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you muchly for that. Don't worry about the delay - better late than never. :) And wow, that version is even more different than I expected. What a shame a proper studio recording along these lines doesn't exist. It's amusing how Bono provides somewhat of a running commentary throughout the song. Now I just need to track down enough details about this performance so that I can actually add it to U2VT. I suspect it's going to have to go under 1992-11-00, Unknown Venue, Unknown Location, Mexico! - Axver 14:30, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's definitely an unusual take, isn't it? I really like it though; the changed lyrics, the falsetto voice, and just Bono on the acoustic guitar. I have to say though, I think I prefer it with the keyboards/piano part present on Zooropa. Good call on the airdate though! MelicansMatkin 17:40, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wainuiomata railway proposals

[edit]

I have identified a file held by Archives New Zealand Wellington office which appears to cover some/all of the proposals you mention in your proposed article on this subject. I'll be visiting Wellington in December, so I'll see about picking up a copy of it then. -- Matthew25187 23:20, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have recently received a copy of this file I mentioned earlier. Since it is illegal for me to make additional copies from my copy or distribute my copy without permission, do you mind if I start with what you have thus far and expand it where necessary before posting it as the final article? -- Matthew25187 (talk) 00:18, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

More U2 rarities

[edit]

I was looking through all of my U2 songs on iTunes, and I realized that I actually have quite a few rarities of live performances. Would you like me to send you copies of some? Some that I think you may be interested in are:

  1. the only live performance of "Like A Song..."
  2. the only recording of "Acrobat" from tour rehearsels, which was actually played acoustically and segued into Zoo Station
  3. the only full-band live recording of "So Cruel" from tour rehearsels
  4. a near soundcheck-quality full-band performance of "Mothers of the Disappeared"
  5. all three times that "Zooropa" was played live

Would you like any of them? MelicansMatkin (talk) 23:45, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking it on. Cheers :) - Gobeirne (talk) 01:04, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Measuring devices

[edit]

Hi Axver! Instead of trying to measure a new tunnel by collecting lots of measuring devicess, the original editor was likely from those parts of the world which spell meter / metre differently! Cheers from one of them (evenn if I did not, to my knowledge, muck this one up) Ingolfson (talk) 11:49, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You could always use the Convert template which, as well as providing automatic links to the correct articles on the units of measure, also provides alternative measurements for those readers from locales where metrics are not common. -- Matthew25187 (talk) 12:13, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help needed with Diesel Traction Group page

[edit]

The page at Diesel Traction Group has a notability tag requiring it to be improved. I've started this work, but have deemed it necessary to redirect the original page to a new page in order to disambiguate. I just discovered that this should be done by using the Move form to move the page, instead of manually moving content from one page to another. The new page is Diesel Traction Group (NZ). Can you fix this up for me so that I can continue the editing. PatrickDunfordNZ (talk) 11:24, 26 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

U2gigs

[edit]

Hey Axver, just wanted to congratulate you on all the hard work you've put into U2gigs recently. The new layout looks fantastic, and the fast updates have been really great. Have you managed to get any tickets for the tour? I'm certainly looking forward to posting my review on the 1st Toronto show! MelicansMatkin (talk) 04:56, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, so 25 shows between you? That really is insane! Damn, I wish I was rich enough to do that! U2.com really has been a bit out of it this time around; wonder why they posted all those shows and then decided to remove them and add them again! Still, you've done a great job on keeping up with everything so far and breaking a few stories too. I can't wait until the tour rolls around, you guys are always the site I check first. MelicansMatkin (talk) 15:21, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Man, you are really going to have a blast out there; if you have the time, you should try visiting the Vimy Ridge memorial. I went there two years ago (two years ago today actually), and it was a life-changing experience for me. I'll bet you're hoping the band won't have PopMart syndrome when you see them though =P.
That's bizzare that U2.com has been so out of sorts. At least the pre-sales worked better this time. It is bad for a lot of casual fans though; my Mom works with a few U2 fans, and since they knew I was such a big fan they were constantly asking her about the tour, because they couldn't find much about it. They missed getting tickets, unfortunately. As for the scalpers... it's really amazing to me that they can just walk around outside the venue selling tickets since it's illegal. You'd think they'd be arrested. And can't TicketsNow and eBay track the users who upload $30 tickets and try to sell them for $2500? It's illegal, so you think that instead of just yanking the sale they'd contact the ISP and get them to contact police, or something like that.
I'll bet it was great to write that article though; I can't imagine how you managed to find those! MelicansMatkin (talk) 17:00, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

U2 360° Tour

[edit]

Hey Axver, me again; I was wondering something. Since you and Matthias are seeing so many concerts this tour, I assume you'll be taking lots of photographs throughout the tour, right? Would you be able to upload one of them to the U2 360° Tour article at some point to show a visual accompaniment? I figured that aince you two will be so well positioned throughout the tour, you'd be the person to ask. By the way, great coverage of opening night. Disappointing about "Drowning Man", but absolutely great to see "The Unforgettable Fire" again! MelicansMatkin (talk) 00:39, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Taranaki Flyer, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Waitara (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 09:08, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:Lyttelton accident of R 28.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Lyttelton accident of R 28.JPG. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:00, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bare refs

[edit]

Hey there, I noticed you added a citation using a bare reference in this edit. Please use full citations next time, using the various citation templates (such as Cite web)! Thanks! Fun Is Optional (talk page) (please ping on reply) 04:46, 14 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@FunIsOptional: Sorry but I have never understood the point of those citation templates. They are way more cumbersome than simply typing a citation directly. But then I'm the sort of guy who in my professional work stubbornly insists on doing my footnotes and bibliographies manually rather than using Endnote or Zotero like so many other academics. All of these things that supposedly make citation "easier' to my mind just muddle up something that is straightforward manually. Axver (talk) 05:10, 14 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay

[edit]
Golden Bay Air are holding some seats for us until 21 November

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

Be in touch with Schwede66 if this event interests you and you'd like to discuss logistics. Schwede66 09:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
