Discussions on the DotA genre
[edit]Your arguments are losing credibility as you place increasingly nonsensical deletion tags on the titular page. As you could not gain consensus, please leave it be. ~rezecib (talk) 18:05, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
- Quoting Rwiggum:
- Refer here: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Moba_Genre
- "The genre itself has merits, but the name itself (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) is a neologism."
- DotA based games would be more appropriate.
- preceding unsigned comment by Atchucan (talk) at 07:43, 9 August 2010 (UTC).
- So we should all call Real-time strategy games "Dune-based games" and MMORPGs "Ultima-Online-based games". Right.
- The same person in that discussion writes "the genre itself is not yet notable enough for inclusion" -- but that was more than a year ago, during which time the genre has developed significantly. It is now notable.
- Those games you mentioned did not reach the level of mainstream appeal of DotA.
- You cannot call DotA with this so called term, "MOBA."
- But you can consider Heroes of Newerth, lol as games under the DotA genre.

- First: please keep this on your talk page. It was started here, and I do have it on my watchlist so I will see when you edit it just as clearly as I see when you edit mine.
- Both of those games were very widely- and heavily-played for their time. Mainstream appeal has nothing to do with having a proper term for a genre; think of the people who argue for calling these all AoS games; hardly anyone remembers what AoS is anymore, you can't even find it on Wikipedia. As DotA fades into the past it will become similarly awkward to use the term DotA-based game, and a more general (if vague, but hey, so are "Real-time strategy" and "Role-playing game"). ~rezecib (talk) 15:53, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

- -Yes it does, see: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/AOS

- -Real Time Strategy and RPG are not as vague as the neologism, "multiplayer online battle arena" The term has never been used by Aeon of Strife, Defense of the Ancients, Demi-god and Heroes of Newerth. MOBA was just "invented" by Riot Games as a marketing move for their game title, League of Legends.
- You do know that the MOBA article is BS and highly inaccurate.
- Please do know your history before you attempt to zealously defend it. --Atchucan (talk) 20:35, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- They reached a level, time-adjusted, that is roughly equivalent to DotA's level of popularity (which is currently waning).
- I do know my history: you are aware, right, that RTS was a marketing term for Dune II ("Brett Sperry is credited with coining the term to market Dune II.[2][3]" - Real-time strategy), and MMORPG was a marketing term for Ultima Online ("The term MMORPG was coined by Richard Garriott, the creator of Ultima Online, in 1997.[12]" - MMORPG#History [Ultima Online was released in late 1997])?
- Of course the term wasn't used by AoS; but it HAS been used with reference to all of the following games. In the case of every single one of the other genre names, the term for the genre was not developed until at least three games of that genre had been developed. (LoL is the third game in this case)
- Okay, so you found a single mention of AoS on the Wikipedia. There used to be an article on it, but it got deleted due to insignificance. People do use the term MOBA outside of LoL. I played LoL for a single day, and used the term before that.
- I have been adding sources to MOBA. It's not easy to find them, but they are gradually turning up. If there's any overzealousness here, it's on your part; what are you thinking, putting vandalism tags on MOBA?? That's just... ridiculous. ~rezecib (talk) 17:12, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
