Purposeless complications in TeX code

In this edit, why would you write

\underset{y}{\sum}

instead of

\sum_y ?

The former seems merely to add complications when editing. The latter looks like this when rendered:

$\sum _{y}$

Good point. That's a habit that I have from habitually using the single-$ environment in TeX, eg $1 + 1 = 2$, as opposed to the double-$ environment, eg $$1 + 1 = 2$$, the latter being equivalent to the "math" environment. $\underset{y}{\sum}$ looks way better (in my opinion) than $\sum_y$, whereas $$\underset{y}{\sum}$$ is indeed identical to $$\sum_y$$. I see that you also noticed that I always put brackets around subscripts because I think it's a best practice to precisely delineate what letters are meant to be affected by a command and which aren't; eg if you want to write $y_{i}x$, then $y_{i}x$ is tremendously clearer than $y_ix$. But of course these personal habits are why an open source encyclopedia is useful! And if there's a style guide that I haven't found yet that would give me instructions on subtle matters like this, please let me know. - Astrophobe (talk) 21:05, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
