June 2019[edit]

There have been two problems with this account: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business or other organisation or group or a web site, which is also against policy, as an account must be for just one person. Because of those problems, the account has been blocked indefinitely from editing. Additionally, If you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for your contributions to Wikipedia, you must disclose who is paying you to edit.

If you intend to make useful contributions about some topic other than your business or organisation, you may request an unblock. To do so, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:CentralAuth to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy. Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In that reason, you must:

  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block. To do so, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page, replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason for thinking that the block was an error, and publish the page. 331dot (talk) 10:01, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Requested username:

Request reason:

I was not trying to advertise or promote the school. Wanted to add nicer new picture as the building is of historical interest as the person who designed it went on the design The White House. Also, wanted to add text about the history of the school with some interesting heritage facts, but not used to editing Wikipedia and found it difficult to navigate. Thank you. Sorry, I don't really understand the request. I wasn't trying to advertise, just wanted to add a new picture and some history. I didn't mean to violate anything. Please help/ advise. Thank you.

Decline reason:

I am perfectly willing to believe that you "didn't mean to violate anything": almost everyone who edits Wikipedia starts doing so without knowing about the policies and guidelines, and therefore makes mistakes, doing things in perfectly good faith without knowing that they are not acceptable. I did so myself when I started editing, and I don't blame anyone else for doing so. However, looking at your editing history in the light of your statements above raises doubts about your approach to dealing with the situation when you discovered that you had unwittingly fallen foul of Wikipedia policy. While it may well be true that you wished to add a new picture and text about the history of the school, that is certainly not all that you had in mind. You have made 12 edits to the article, and apart from a few trivial corrections, that editing consisted of adding one promotional sentence and removing content unfavourable to the school. You added nothing about the history of the school. Clearly your intention was to make the article reflect the school in a better light, and your failure to acknowledge that does not inspire confidence. Also, I am puzzled by "Edited in error, didn't mean to publish changes to text, new to the process, sorry. Was trying to update the image to a new photo." How to add a photograph to Wikipedia is far from immediately obvious, and confuses many new editors, but I fail to understand how trying to do so could have accidentally caused twelve edits which all made changes to the text, several of them by a funny coincidence all accidentally removing references unfavourable to the school, and another one adding content favourable to it. Your statement about that likewise does not inspire confidence. JamesBWatson (talk) 14:59, 28 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You have not proposed a new username as instructed. You can just reformat your existing request to do so. 331dot (talk) 13:48, 26 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That choice of name is equally unacceptable. Please review the username policy. Usernames must indicate that an individual is operating the account(your real name is not required). A username in the format of "JohnDoe of AshdownHouse" would be acceptable. Please replace "AshdownHouse" with a new choice of username, no need for a new request. Below(and formatted as a standard comment), please explain what you will edit about if unblocked that is not related to Ashdown House. 331dot (talk) 12:12, 27 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Your editing bears such a close resemblance to that of another account that there cannot be any doubt that the two accounts have been used by people who have been in contact with one another about the changes to the article, or perhaps both accounts have been used by one person. To avoid any possibility of misunderstanding, now that you have been made aware of the relevant Wikipedia policies, similar editing by another related account will not be acceptable.
