"valko"

[edit]

Hi,

Was wondering if you could help me. Does "valko" mean anything in Finnish? I'm assuming it's cognate with valkoinen or vaalea, but can't figure out what valko alone might mean. It's supposedly the source of the Toki Pona word walo "white". Or is there maybe a word something like "vaalo"?

Thanks, kwami (talk) 20:10, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Valko is a synonym for valkoinen (white), but valko is used only (there may be few exceptions) as a first part of compounds. For example, white gold is valkokulta (not valkoinenkulta nor valkoinen kulta), white pepper is valkopippuri (not valkoinenpippuri nor valkoinen pippuri) etc. There are similar cases with other colours, too: viher for vihreä (green; viherpeukalo = green thumb), puna for punainen (red; puna-apila = red clover), sini for sininen (blue; sinikopio = blueprint, literally "blue copy"), kelta for keltainen (yellow; keltakuume = yellow fever). Puna and sini do, however, have other meanings, too.
There is no such word as vaalo in the Finnish language. Some words resembling vaalo would be valo (light, as the opposite of darkness), vaali (election) and Vaala (name of a municipality in Finland).
I hope this helps. And note that I am not a linguist. If you want a precise and definite answer, you should contact one. :-) --Apalsola tc 21:44, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! That's exactly what I was looking for. kwami (talk) 21:47, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Finnish Municipality

[edit]

Terv--Pudeo 23:00, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

--Apalsola tc 23:11, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(Finnish) Ensimmäiseen kysymykseen sellainen lisäys, että kartan kokoahan on toki mahdollista rajoittaa mapsize-parametrilla. Oletuksenahan se on melko suuri. Jos asettaa kartan leveydeksi esim. 150px, pienentää se jo mallinetta huomattavasti. --Apalsola tc 23:19, 4 January 2009 (UTC) -- (edit) Apalsola tc 23:20, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmnjaa, no tuo 150px näyttää paljon paremmalta. Sitä kannatan, mutta yhtenäisyys kannattaa varmaan olla.. Mutta samapa se tässä kun pitää muutenkin paljon muutoksia nyt tehdä. --Pudeo 16:37, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(in Finnish) Muutin mallineen puolelta nyt oletusarvoksi tuon 150px. Artikkelikohtaisesti kartan leveyden voi edelleen määrätä mapsize-parametrilla. Ja voihan tuota oletusarvoakin tietysti tarvittaessa vielä muuttaa. --Apalsola tc 16:49, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I'm glad somebody is adding the infoboxes to FInnish municipalities but please don't use Infbox Finnish Municipality, there is no need for it and the box is too thick. Please use the standard Template:Infobox Settlement and fill it to meet your requirements. Thanks

Actually Luumäki looks fine, I was judging by Vantaa which has affected the page alignment. Really the FInnish municipality infobox didn't need creating but its OK. Most imortant thing is that we bring these municipal article sup to an acceptable level, I'd imagine a lot of Finnish transwikiying is required, If so please add a Template:Expand Finnish. Thanks!! Dr. Blofeld White cat 10:41, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The reason I created and use {{Infobox Finnish Municipality}} template is that it gets up-to-date population, area and demographics data from a centralized database. (See fi:Wikipedia:FMPortal/en for more info.) In addition, it is a transclusion of {{Infobox Settlement}}, so the layout is standardized. --Apalsola tc 12:56, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 04:51, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion, guidelines for use at WP:MINOR). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and all users will still be able to manually mark their edits as being minor in the usual way.

For well-established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 21:10, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nikon F70

[edit]

Hi, I have been reading some of the Nikon articles. I noticed that you contributed significantly to Nikon F70 This article and others seem to give a different evolutionary lineage than is implied by the common chart posted at most of the articles. I collect Nikons and have many of these cameras. I'm trying to figure out the evolution of the 35mm AF series, especially the upper end cameras and fill-in the cameras missing from my collection. Here are a few of my nicer AFs: [1] The main collection is at [2] BTW, these are available for free use on WP, and I'm happy to provide a release. I'm not writing much at WP but fully support the project as I can.

Is there a group who is coordinating then Nikon articles at all? Best regards, Kevin --Kevin Murray (talk) 00:06, 27 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Kevin Murray, I have only added a commonscat link to Nikon F70, and I am not that familiar with that model or other Nikon cameras. There is Wikipedia:WikiProject Photography for coordinating photogaphy related articles but, as far as I know, there are no Nikon-specific groups.
You can upload your photographs to Wikimedia Commons:
Best regards, ––Apalsola tc 19:13, 1 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I have hundreds of photos of cameras, so I'll just let Wikipedians take what the want from my site. --Kevin Murray (talk) 00:09, 2 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately that is not possible at the moment due to licensing/copyright reasons. According to Commons:Commons:Licensing, only media that is explicitly freely licensed can be uploaded to Commons. This includes Creative Commons Attribution/ShareAlike license, but for example "available for free use on WP" is not enough. In addition, there is "All rights reserved" on Flickr, and no license at all on the web4home page.
So, if you want to release your images for use in Wikipedia, you need either upload them yourself (and select a proper license tag on upload), or to change the "All rights reserved" license tag to CC-Attribution or CC-Attribution-ShareAlike license on Flickr and to add the following text (an example) on the bottom of your web4homes page: "Photographs on this page are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license." (English is not my native language, so feel free to correct any spelling/grammar mistakes. You may also choose another license, provided it is accepted on Commons.) In addition, you need to mention the photographer's name (and have him/her permission if you are not the photographer). Please notice also that "NoDerivs" and "NonCommercial" licenses nor "fair use" images are not allowed on Commons. Some more information on Commons:
This may sound bureaucratic, but Wikimedia projects want to respect copyright. ––Apalsola tc 22:49, 2 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:07, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
