[edit]You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and be aware that promotional editing is not acceptable regardless of the username you choose. Additionally, if your contributions to Wikipedia form all or part of work for which you are, or expect to be, paid, you must disclose who is paying you to edit.
If your username does not represent a group, organization or website, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}
at the bottom of your talk page.
You may simply create a new account, but you may prefer to change your username to one that complies with our username policy, so that your past contributions are associated with your new username. If you would prefer to change your username, you may appeal this username block by adding the text
{{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}
at the bottom of your talk page. Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names.
Thank you. Beeblebrox (talk) 23:55, 13 December 2019 (UTC)- I realize this is probably unexpected and surprising, but each Wikipedia project has it's own rules, and the English Wikipedia is somewhat more restrictive than some other projects about what kinds of usernames it allows. We also do not allow role accounts or shared accounts, each account should both represent and be controlled by a single individual. Beeblebrox (talk) 23:58, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
Given the issues below, and the apparently rather bad advice/help you've received from Doc Taxon, I'm afraid I feel it is necessary to re-block your account with slightly different settings, you will need to appeal the block yourself, while providing a new username that is within policy and reasonable assurances that the account is strictly limited to access by a single individual, 'and disclose any paid editing relationship you may have with the opera company. Anew block notice will be issued below with detailed instructions on appealing. Beeblebrox (talk) 00:09, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
Name
[edit]Beeblebrox, I received a message regarding this user on my German talk page. What can they do now? Ask here for a rename? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:38, 15 December 2019 (UTC)
- Well, there's two concerns here, one is the username itself as it represents a group, and the other is this edit seems to imply that the account is a shared/role account. Renaming will only fix the name problem, so probably the easiest course of action is to simply create a new account that both represents and is controlled by a single person. It can still contain the name of the opera company, so long as there is a personal identifier of some kind, i.e. <name>@Bay Staatsoper would be fine. Beeblebrox (talk) 20:16, 15 December 2019 (UTC)

@Beeblebrox: Dear Beeblebrox! Please note, that there is an OTRS ticket to verify the identity of this user account. Please unblock the user account, the verification has been determined. Thank you very much, Doc Taxon (talk) 22:58, 15 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Doc Taxon: and @Gerda Arendt: Somebody is confused here, and it's entirely possible that it is me, because this conversation suddenly makes no sense at all tome. In the edit I referenced in my reply above to Gerda, what this user seemed to be saying was that their username was also the name of the opera company. I don't speak German, so maybe this is exactly where this all went sideways, but am I right that what you're saying is that this a personal name after all and does not represent a group? If that is the case, that was literally the only thing they needed to explain to get unblocked, OTRS was completely unecessary, there's instructions on how to appeal right here on this page in the block notice. Beeblebrox (talk) 23:12, 15 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Beeblebrox: this user account officially represents the Bavarian opera company, and this has been verified by OTRS ticket. So please unblock the user account. Thank you very much, Doc Taxon (talk) 23:34, 15 December 2019 (UTC)
- Ok, so that's exactly what I did think and exactly why I blocked them. This name is not acceptable and EN.WP absolutely does not allow role accounts. I made all of that perfectly clear, twice, right here on this page. We also don't generally don't accept third-party unblock requests, this user needs to action, themselves, to rectify the problems that I have already thoroughly explained above. Beeblebrox (talk) 23:45, 15 December 2019 (UTC)
- Sorry, I checked the policies and you're right. I apologize for the inconvenience. Doc Taxon (talk) 00:08, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

... which brings us back to question one. Do I understand right that they should appeal? How would they know that? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:42, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, at this point they need to file an appeal. It's all detailed in the block notice. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:57, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
@Doc Taxon: This is not the first time I've seen an OTRS volunteer demand we unblock a user in a manner that was contrary to policy, disruptive, and confusing to the user. Perhaps it would be best to not make such demands on the talk page of the user in question. Perhaps it would be best if you not involve yourself in unblock requests.-- Deepfriedokra 16:47, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

Request reason:
First of all, I would like to thank Beeblebrox, Doc Taxon and Gerda Arendt for their help concerning this issue. Upon reviewing the provided information above and the EN.WP guidelines I want to explain a few things and file an appeal in order to unblock this account. When creating this account I did not take into consideration that the name Bay Staatsoper might be problematic. However, since this account is in fact not a shared account and only accessed by one person it is not a problem at all to specify this. If possible, I suggest to rename this account following the advice given by Beeblebrox to Anna@Bay Staatsoper to clarify that it is only me who is responsible for contributions. As previous contributions to this matter already state, this account is associated with the Bavarian State Oper (Bayerische Staatsoper). I hereby want to disclose that Bavarian State Opera is my employer and that my contributions to Wikipedia are related to my employment. I understand that Wikipedia does not tolerate promotional contributions. Please take into consideration that my main goal for contributing to Wikipedia is not to promote Bavarian State Opera on Wikipedia but to make well-founded information about (contemporary) operas available online. One recent example might be: I published an article on Wikipedia Germany (The Snow Queen (Hans Abrahamsen)) about an opera that was premiered in October 2019 by The Royal Opera in Copenhagen. Since the opera is not only written in Danish but also in English I feel that this opera is relevant for English speaking readers as well. Given the fact that the composer is becoming even more famous at the moment (see recent articles by The New York Times) it can be assumed that people want to learn more about his oeuvre. Thank you Doc Taxon, Rodomonte and Gerda Arendt for your support and confirming that my German article is not written in a promotional way. All in all, I hope you review this block and conclude that my account does not violate the EN.WP guidelines after changing my username since it is only me who is responsible for this account. Thank you very much. Bay Staatsoper (talk) 15:58, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

- I really try not to be very involved in reviewing my own blocks, but for the record I am reasonably satisfied with the above as it is clear the user is trying to operate within our policies. That's a lot more than we get from most people blocked for these type of issues. Beeblebrox (talk) 20:46, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
Unblock discussion
[edit]Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and not a venue to inform the public of all the more or less wonderful opera out there. It is an encyclopedia. Subjects of encyclopedia articles must meet notability requirements. "All content must be cited from reliable sources that are unconnected with the subject and have a reputation for fact checking." -- Deepfriedokra 16:53, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
- There are already many reviews of the danish production, even in english (google search). The Bayerische Staatsoper is one of the major german opera houses. Also Barbara Hannigan, a very famous singer of contemporary operas, belongs to the cast. So there cannot be any doubt about the notability. Of course the article will need some additional external links, but they can be added at any time. --Rodomonte (talk) 20:29, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
- I am inclined to consider this unblock request favourably. However, an attempt to rename the account to "Anna@Bay Staatsoper" resulted in the message "The requested username is not valid"; evidently "@" is not permitted. You could have "Anna at Bay Staatsoper", but I can see that may not be totally suitable for an account that works mainly at at German Wikipedia. It seems that "Anna (Bay Staatsoper)" would work, if you would be happy with that. JBW (talk) Formerly JamesBWatson 13:28, 18 December 2019 (UTC)
@JBW Anna (Bay Staatsoper) is perfectly fine, thank you so much! Bay Staatsoper (talk) 13:30, 18 December 2019 (UTC)
- I have renamed your account from "Bay Staatsoper" to "Anna (Bay Staatsoper)", and I shall now unblock the account. Please make sure you look at the conflict of interest guideline (if you haven't already done so) so that you can avoid future problems. JBW (talk) Formerly JamesBWatson 21:16, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
