Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended for publicity and/or promotional purposes. If you intend to edit constructively in other topic areas, you may be granted the right to continue under a change of username. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, website or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not, although if you can demonstrate a pattern of future editing in strict accordance with our neutral point of view policy, you may be granted this right. See Wikipedia's FAQ for Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, organization, or clients. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you may consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

If you do intend to make useful contributions here about some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
    • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
    • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.

My first edits were to practice making visual features (infobox). I have great respect for wikipedia and was caught in an awkward position when I called it quits at 5 pm today. My next planned edits were structural- building out categories for Educational Tourism (the category is dominated by odd minor types of Tourism such as 'Stag Party tourism' and 'Spring break'), and then updating pages on Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. I produce tons of educational resources (NOTE: not sales material, but honest to goodness resources about travel. I get the distinction, and apologise for getting near the line) and frequently do better on research; as such, I figured this was a good chance to share back. If you guys aren't into it, fine. I get why I was blocked, I need to change the username or wipe the account, but I'm not trying to troll. Let me know what's up. Addendum. The page I edited has been flagged for Lack of NPOV, and 'sounding like Advertising'. There are reputable links pointing in, and I would be glad to add others. I challenge you to say what content on the page reads like advertising; it is only structural and informative. It has also passed previous review. Perhaps, this is not the correct venue for discussion. If not, I will be glad to pursue further on the article's Talk page.

Decline reason:

While I'm happy to unblock you in order for you to change your username and edit constructively (on other articles), the username you've chosen still seems too promotional to allow you to use it. Please feel free to request another rename with a more appropriate username that represents yourself and not your business. — foxj 17:19, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As you will now have read WP:COI, you'll understand why people who are directly affiliated with a company should never actually edit the article(s) about that company. You're also well aware by now our requirement for reliable sources, and a company website or personal knowledge or created-resources would not qualify as such. Although it appears you intend to edit outside the area of the company, we need to ensure that WP:SPAM does not occur. Note: you state that an article "passed previous review" - there's no such thing that would ever guarantee keeping of a promotional article - we do not have that type of review process. Request reason:

Lobbying for clemency. I agree that I ought to read COI as a verbatim rule. In any case, I spaced completely by naming the account Worldstrides. If you check my history, you'll see the only edits I made (beyond grammatical changes for practice) were the Infobox. No edits to the content on-page, where the info in the box was already sourced. At User Bwilkins: I see that you're right about review process. As I understand, previous versions of this article (created by others, outside the company) were deleted for having copied our advertising material. (Record of previous deletion is on the page's Talk.) The current page was written to be non-promotional, informative and descriptional, a while ago. I sincerely don't believe it sounds like Advertising, and I request your guidance. The double banner across the page is rough, and I urge feedback as I am responsible for making the changes necessary to clean it up. I would be glad to accept a different username and continue editing, responsibly, on other parts of the site; alternately, I could let this account vanish, and find other outlets. I am glad to agree to whatever course adheres to your established bureaucracy. Please forgive my slowness but I wanted to fully understand the common guidelines on this.

Yours, Ankur.

Requested username:

Request reason:

In accordance with foxj's advice, I request renaming this account to a personal username. As this change takes place, I would also ask a chance to appeal the 'Close Connection' and 'Advertising' warnings that were placed on the WorldStrides wiki page (https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/WorldStrides), in concurrence with the prior edits. In reviewing process since then, I think we have established that while it was inappropriate to have made edits with the corresponding username, that the edits themselves were not substantive in their scope and served an aesthetic function. Bumping this post. Poster respectfully requests a period of review. Thanks, Ankur
