Conflict of interest - Institute of Welsh affairs[edit]

I have a CoI regarding the editing of the Institute of Welsh Affairs page. I am a paid employer of the IWA and am editing the content to remove inaccuracies and bring the information up to date.

Conflict of interest - Institute of Welsh affairs[edit]

Information icon Hello, AngharadDalton. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about in the article Institute of Welsh Affairs, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
  • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you.  Velella  Velella Talk   13:20, 25 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but this article needs changing. It is out of date and incorrect; disallowing changes and only linking to policy documentation is not proving to be a useful intervention. This page needs to be changed; my boss really doesn't care about Wiki policy, he cares about whether the stuff written here is correct. Can you please tell me how I am meant to do this?

Certainly. Please read WP:COI to start with which outlines the issue and how to work with a conflict of interest. The very short version is that you need to declare your conflict of interest on your user page so that there is transparency - a policy that I am sure the Institute would endorse. Then on the Article talk page here list what you would like changing and why, provide links and references and then let other, uninvolved editors make the judgement about what should and should not be included. This shouldn't be a problem with an article like this. What you cannot do and what any editor cannot do is to use text from your web-site - that is copyright violation. Hope that this helps. I will keep an eye on the article and will lend a hand when I can. One other thing is that although the article is about the organisation that you work in, neither you nor your boss can determine what is written here provided it is verifiable. That can be uncomfortable at times, but you don't own the article, the Wikipedia community does. Regards  Velella  Velella Talk   14:35, 25 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. That is really helpful. We will follow the instructions :)
