Information icon Hello, AndySmith-ca. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the page Tyndale University, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Thanks for doing that. Canterbury Tail talk 13:52, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Canterbury Tail, thank you for your help with this. I am an employee of Tyndale University and have now disclosed the COI on my user page. I am fairly new to contributing to Wikipedia and still learning the ropes but I am very open to correction and mentoring.

Tyndale recently legally changed their name from Tyndale University College & Seminary to Tyndale University. They wanted the Wikipedia article to reflect the name change. I waited until I had an external source (public government documentation) as a reference and then made some simple changes to the name and added one line in the History section reflecting the name change being careful to use exact wording from the government documentation. This was a little over a month after the legal name change.

Today, about four months after the name change, I moved the article from the old name (Tyndale University College and Seminary) to the new name Tyndale University. I then made sure there were no double redirects. There were a number of older redirects that I fixed and a bot fixed a couple others. Tyndale began in 1894 and has a long history and a series of name changes which is where most of these redirects came from.

I was initially hoping that another editor would have completed the article move after the initial changes were made, and maybe I should have made that recommendation, I am still quite new at this. Please know that my intentions are good and my desire is only to reflect the name change and ensure the article is factually accurate.

May I ask a little advise?

Our President has retired and will be leaving at the end of June 2020. Our new President, Dr. Marjory Kerr [1] will be starting July 1, 2020. Is it appropriate for someone like myself to change this information on the infobox? If not, what would be the best way to make sure this information is accurate?

Thank you for your help. --AndySmith-ca (talk) 14:25, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. First off thanks for reaching out, and also thanks for not using your account for promotional purposes. So two items. 1) redirects aren't in themselves a problem. In fact for older articles where the name of the place is relevant to that point in time, it's best to leave the old link and name in. 2) For the new president I think since that's a purely factual change, that you can back up with references, that you'd be okay to make it. However don't make it until the change actually happens per WP:CRYSTALBALL. Once the time comes around I think you're good to make the change supported by a reference. It's not controversial or advertising/promotional. Canterbury Tail talk 14:42, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your advise. Regarding #1 - I have made the change in a few places that had lists of Universities in Canada, or Ontario etc. in which the current name is the most accurate. I was careful to ensure historical uses of older names were left alone to best fit the context. Also, thank you for your advise on the second point — I really do want to respect the Wikipedia rules and guidelines, just need to better understand them — your help is appreciated! --AndySmith-ca (talk) 14:59, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify on the name. For modern listings etc, yes I agree with your assessment that updating the name is appropriate. Canterbury Tail talk 15:12, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
