Why this page

[edit]

This page has been created at User talk:Andrewa/NYRM 2017 in anticipation of a new Requested Move at Talk:New York in 2017. If and when that happens, this is a page for discussions that relate to that RM, but do not belong at Talk:New York or on other user talk pages.

There should be no corresponding user page, to allow for the possibility of eventually moving this page to be a subpage of Talk:New York, as a means of archiving the discussions here. I will consider doing that, and the eventual page name and the best procedure for the move, but only after the close of the RM in question.

It should not be the first stop in discussing anything.

  • The place to record a !vote is the Survey section of the RM.
  • The best place to first discuss a !vote is the Discussion section of the RM.
  • The first place to discuss user behaviour is always on that user's own talk page.
  • No discussion of user behaviour is in general appropriate on this page (and nor is it in general permitted on article talk pages such as Talk:New York).

It should be considered for discussions that go beyond two levels of indenting or show any other signs of disrupting the discussion at the RM. Recent NY-related RMs have been compromised by the lengthy, messy discussions that have taken place both in the Survey and Discussion sections. Some signs (not proof) of disruption:

  • A reply to a reply to a reply to a !vote in the Survey section (ie more than three colons or asterisks in any combination).
  • It's better but not essential, in a controversial RM such as this, not to discuss at all in the Survey section, but to take comments straight to the Discussion section. Leave the Survey section purely for the !votes and the rationale that should be part of each.
  • Discussion that is going around in circles.
  • Long sentences, long paragraphs, even long words, or anything else that looks like it's meant to confront rather than to inform. The goal is to build consensus.
  • Personal attacks. Consider taking this as a behavioural issue to the user's talk page, but take the discussion that provoked the attack here.

In general, start a new section here when bringing a discussion across, and provide the relevant diff of Talk:New York. If you need any help with this, just ask for it on my main user talk page. Or, if it's clearly an issue covered by an existing section, then perhaps a subsection of that section is more appropriate... but again a diff is helpful.
