Articles for creation/List of Jewish film directors
Hi there, and thank you for reviewing my article at: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/List_of_Jewish_film_directors
I'm afraid I'm not clear about what needs to be changed. I was hoping that the notability of the article was demonstrated by the "Further Reading" section. And I thought that the notability of the individual entries was addressed by following the "Common selection criteria" found in Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Stand-alone lists: "Every entry meets the notability criteria for its own non-redirect article in the English Wikipedia."
I know the article needs a lot of work: a lead section, and more and better references. But I was hoping it follows enough of the basic guidelines for creating a list that it could get up there and then be improved over time.Hirschjoshua (talk) 06:22, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)You caught me right as I was on my way to get ready for the long weekend! What makes you think there needs to be a list of Jewish film directors? I don't see a reason why such should be included as a standalone article. I noticed I tagged the list as not notable, however, I did tag this incorrectly (it's on my very short list of go back and fix from when I was working a mass decline earlier). Instead of tagging as non-notable, I meant to tag with a custom rationale, essentially asking what I just asked. Each person you have on this list is notable, but I don't see why a standalone list, rather than included somewhere in an article related to Jewish people, or prominent Jewish people. Also, I just want to make sure this list has no derogatory intentions, which I doubt, but I just want to make sure. Anyway, I look forward to reading your response when I get back from Vacation on Monday. Have a great weekend! AndrewN talk 06:31, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
- Shoot. I just ran across this discussion of a previously deleted category, Jewish film directors (Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2007 July 27). Not sure what to do. If I were creating a category, then I should definitely follow the instructions for undeletion (i.e. first contact the one who deleted it). Since this is a list, not a category, technically the policy may not apply. But the issues are the same. I think I can make a strong case for this list based on Wikipedia policies. Any suggestions on how to proceed?Hirschjoshua (talk) 17:07, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
- We need to go about this one carefully then since it is something that has been deleted before. Sometime this afternoon or tomorrow, I'll peer over the old deletion discussion and see if I can't get some of those that were involved in the discussion to comment. Template:AfCDel
Hi I have deleted your template Template:AfCDel as a misrepresentation of policy. There is no consensus for this reason for speedy deletion. I will start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 22:07, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

Lots of stuff and my mind and thought process getting away from me late at night again. NBD. Would have appreciated you asking about it before deleting, but, as I said, NBD. AndrewN talk 04:34, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
- I notified you straight after, if I did not delete it I would have had to go and decline over a hundred speedy deletes. Anyway the discussion is still available for you to make your proposal. The code for your template is posted at the discussion, if you want to work on it. Before any mass deletes it is good to have a discussion. Everything that you actually saved should be recoverable. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 11:23, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, meh. I'll have a look at it. It shouldn't have been actually CSD tagged, but would be deletable under that criteria. Only reason I decided to tag was to see if there was any response from the people who worked on them (i.e. are they still watching them). Definitely wasn't the right way to go about it. Thanks for the catch and help Graeme. I owe you one man. Same to you Robert! AndrewN talk 18:10, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

Decline of my article on Karnakamma Telugu Brahmins
Dear Andrew,
I do agree that I had not provided valid references or hyperlinks to my article. But the reason is, there ain't much available on the net. Most of the info I could get from the net is in the form of Q&A among members of our sect/community only and no official website. Anyway, I will give below one or two such sites, which you may consider to include my article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nara1904 (talk • contribs) 12:29, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
- Remember, you can use book, magazine, newspaper, etc. sources. They don't have to be online. But remember, you need to have reliable, 3rd party sourcing in your articles. Have a look atRule 42 (as it applies to Wikipedia). This should help you out. AndrewN talk 18:18, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
Selecting pages to edit/create for WikiEducation Project
Andrew,
I was wondering how do I create a page for use in my class? I know that technically I can just create a page but I want to increase the chance that some of the pages or proposed edits will be accepted.
I am in the process of updating the format the Wiki Education project has set up to my class format which is very intensive (its only six weeks instead of twelve).
Thank you for your time!
Dnmppolitico (talk) 03:34, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
- Gotta love summer short sessions (I've got a 4 week programming class this summer that just started)! Anyway, I'm going to guess you're talking about creating an article (if not, let me know and we can get you going in the right direction). The best bet for now, on an entirely new page, would be to create a sandbox. You can create one in your userspace or off the actual class page. Since you're dealing with a class, it'll probably be easier to set up any new articles in a sandbox off the class page. I'll set something up so it's a little easier, and get back to you tonight or tomorrow. AndrewN talk 04:18, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
- {{Done}} Have a look at your class page now. In the articles section, I've added a little text box where students can enter their new article name, click a button, and be taken to a sandbox page. This page is where students can draft their articles without fear of them being deleted before they finish. The page will have appropriate notices informing other editors that it is a student's draft so they know what's going on. If you have a student wanting to work on an existing article, we'll handle that on a case-by-case basis. Let me know if you have any more questions. AndrewN talk 05:09, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
Question
Hi. Could you please explain to me this edit? I'm just a bit curious as to why you asked them to expand it, while the submission was suitable enough to have passed. Thanks! Kevin Rutherford (talk) 22:54, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
- Hey Kevin. The article is suitable enough to have passed, yes, but in my opinion, I'm not sure it would have survived. When I look at whether to accept or decline, one major factor is: When this article hits the main space, is it likely to be tagged by someone for deletion, or will it survive. I know at one point I would have ended up tagging that myself way back when, and when an editor sees their new page tagged for deletion, that can be quite discouraging. It's kind of a lesser of two evils decision in my opinion. If you feel the article should be accepted, feel free to do so and move it to the main space, but personally, I know I would rather be told I have a good start and to expand an article, than to have it accepted by one editor and then swiftly tagged for deletion by another editor. Hope this makes sense. AndrewN talk 18:15, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
- That didn't even answer my question. It had reliable sources, and it has established notability. Declining an article based on the fact that you think it is too short is not something that you should be doing. Many times, I have accepted an article based on good faith that they will expand it. What if they never returned based on the fact that they didn't know where else to expand it? That in and off it self is what is truly offputting. Remember, a lot of people are not like us. If you tell them "no", they might never return, even if that "no" was to remove a few things that are very minor. It is best to be kind and help them, as "Expand. Good start." really tells them nothing.
- On an unrelated note, is it possible that you could simplify your page notice? It is very long, with three templates. One template is really enough, and it would make the page appear less daunting to the new user. Thanks! Kevin Rutherford (talk) 19:37, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
Review of Articles for creation/BroadLight
Hi Andrew,
Thank you in advance for your time and I hope you can help.
I've noticed you were the last to review Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/BroadLight : The article is indeed structured in a very simple and informative way yet conveys no less information than already published similar articles such as Alphamosaic, Gigle Networks, Element 14, Redpine Signals and others.
I recognize the page has been rejected several times and I am not sure how this fact influences each additional review. In any case, I would greatly appreciate your insight on how to make some positive progress with this submission.

Regarding review of Holistic versus Analytic Cognition page
Hi AndrewN! My article Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Holistic versus Analytic Cognition was recently declined submission. It was suggested that I improve on notability and look at the golden rule. I have reliable resources from prestigious academic journals on my page, so I don't think that is the issue. Holistic and analytic cognition is a significant topic in cultural psychology and social cognition, and while there are articles on Holism and Analytic, and Analytic psychology, these are all distinct topics from my article. Holism and Analytic are regarding philosophy while Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Holistic versus Analytic Cognition is regarding cultural differences between East Asians and Westerners. I would appreciate any advice as to what I should do to improve the page so it can be accepted. Thanks! Thisisjm (talk) 21:04, 28 May 2012 (UTC)Thisisjm

Creation of Page.
Good day Sir! I just would like to ask on how to search more "notable" sources on my article (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Team_G_of_Party_Pilipinas). The subject is dated on 2010-2011 and i have problems gathering more information for the said article because it was a program on Philippine Television. All i found was the newspaper articles found on the internet from the PR head of the network. Can it become a "notable" source?
Hoping for your reply. I really wanted to have this article on Wikipedia. Please help me. Thanks :) 112.198.77.91 (talk) 06:16, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
Hansel and Gretel Picture Garden
Hello AndrewN,
The Hansel and Gretel Picture Garden has been shortlisted in the New Yorker [1];, featured in the Art Newspaper [2]; - a very prominent art journal and a highly credible third party source - and shows from Hansel and Gretel Picture Garden have been reviewed in Artillery magazine (another prominent art journal)[3]; and the New York Times [4];. What more is needed to to prove the notability of Hansel and Gretel Picture Garden?

Article declined: Bernd Würsig
Article submission: Bernd Würsig Link: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Bernd_W%C3%BCrsig
Dear Andrew why was the article declined? My second submission contains reliable and verifiable independent sources, including a number of published and reputable books by authors other than Dr. Würsig. The reported information matches what is written in those books. About half of the 28 sources cited in the article are independent and verifiable. The other half (the scientific publications by Dr. Würsig) are peer reviewed and published in high-rank scientific journals. This means those publications are the product of rigorous review by independent referees, as well as editorial scrutiny. I have visited a number of Wiki pages about other scientists, and I have noted that some articles exclusively quote the published work of the featured scientist. That is not the case of the article featuring Dr. Würsig, where the information can be easily verified by reading the cited work of independent authors. I would be grateful if you could explain what is missing. I did read the Wiki guidelines, and I can't see what may be wrong with my submission. I would be grateful if you could help me understand, thus giving me a chance to improve my next submission. Leandra Medine Article
Hello AndrewN,
The link to my article is as follows:
http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Leandra_Medine
You reviewed and declined it and it seems to me that it was because you did not think this person meets the criteria of a notable person who should be included in the encyclopedia. However I went on the Wikipedia help page and spoke to some users who disagreed and thought this article met the proper criteria. I was hoping you could tell me what I could do to improve the article and resubmit. I used very notable sources and believe it is a worthy contribution to Wikipedia especially when a person such as Rumi Neely who works in the same field as Leandra Medine has a Wikipedia page that is up (see link below):

Still need reviews for the Wikipedia Education Program research project
Hi, Andrew! Thank you so much for reviewing some articles for the Wikipedia Education Program research project! The results of this project are vital for planning the coming semester in the program, and we'd like to review as many classes as possible in the next week.
I have gone through each class to prioritize for various projects, and everyone on the Education team at the Wikimedia Foundation would be extremely grateful if you could participate further by reviewing a few more articles ('pre' and 'post' versions). If we can rally a lot of editors to review one or two articles each day, we will be able to make the most use of this research for our tight timeline. We are really eager to find out which classes have been successful according to the Wikipedian standard.
Here is the list of priority articles if you're interested in helping out. Thanks so much for your consideration! JMathewson (WMF) (talk) 01:41, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Andrew, Thanks for you response. I intend to focus on Representative Michele Bachmann's position on immigration, specifically what she said her position was during the primaries: how she was going to deal with the undocumented immigrants, and how she was going to secure the border along Mexico had she became the President.
My goal for the project is that, since I am taking a Women and American Politics course and I am an immigrant, I would like to learn about and write something that would be a juxtaposition of these two topics.
As our class project we are supposed to either create a new article or edit an existing one. I noticed that Michele Bachmann's "position on immigration" section has very limited information so I would like to edit that article.

- Continued on user's talk page
Hey, AndrewN, I saw you handling this on JohnCD's talk page. I just wanted to let you know that Careymur posted the same thing again as a new article; I've nominated it for speedy deletion as a test page. Is there another way we should handle these? Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 17:52, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
- I have explained, again, on the user's talk page that this information should be added to the main article, not posted as an introduction-less content fork. I have also explained WP:BRD, i.e. if you are reverted, don't just do it again, discuss. I wonder, does the user even know s/he has a talk page? S/he doesn't seem to take any notice of messages on it.
- General suggestion for briefing for all students (we had similar troubles with the IEP last year):
- Wikipedia is not just a website to edit, it;s a community you are joining and need to work with,
- What a talk page is,
- What a yellow "You have new messages" bar means,
- If you get messages you don't understand, don't ignore them, ask the person who sent them,
- The principle of WP:BRD.
- Regards, JohnCD (talk) 18:55, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
- Writ, thanks for letting me know. Not really sure what's going up, but I'll be in touch with the student again.
- John, I'm going to be in touch with the professor to see if I can get a Skype or IRC session scheduled with some of the students, and definitely go over these (and a few other things).
- If Careymur does post this again, definitely let me know. As much as I hate to say it, a temp-block may be in order if this issue persists, but we'll see how things go. AndrewN talk 20:00, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
- If s/he does it a fourth time, maybe a 24-hr attention-getting block, but I hope not , because I have an idea what the problem is - see below. Three more points:
- On talk pages, add new messages at the bottom, or they may be overlooked,
- A post which Carey added to (the middle of) Talk:Mazie Hirono said: "it would be helpful if Ms. Hirono could include about her activism... ", suggesting that Carey is under the impression that the article is written and maintained by Ms Hirono herself, as would be the case on Facebook or Myspace. That may be why Carey has been reluctant to add material to the article directly. Other students might be under the same misapprehension.
- On the "User profile" tab under "My preferences" there is a drop-down box for "Gender", which defaults to "Undisclosed". I would encourage students to set that. If they have any objection, there's obviously no requirement, but with unisex given-names like "Carey" it avoids having to use cumbersome pronouns like s/he or his/her.

Hi Andrew, I am having a bit of trouble posting and I was hoping you could guide me. I've tried to go to a few different Michele Bachmann pages to make my edits as per our class assignment, but they all seem to be protected and I am unable to edit them. Inappropriate Blanking of AfC Submissions
Hello Excirial, I noticed you blanked an AfC submission you declined for being written like an advertisement. Please remember that ONLY articles declined for BLP or CV should be blanked. I know this is a new option in the AfC Helper Script, but unless it's CV or BLP, don't blank the submission. AndrewN talk 07:19, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

- Oh and by the way: reading the previous revision: yes it shouldn't have been blanked. mabdul 07:42, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
- It was not a copyright violation or wholly negative unsourced BLP. It was a bio about a non-notable person, which doesn't mean it should be blanked. AndrewN talk 18:23, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
- Oh and by the way: reading the previous revision: yes it shouldn't have been blanked. mabdul 07:42, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
- Its not really that new a option, it has always been there as far as i can recall. But really, did you have to write this in a style that implies i am doing carpet bombing raids on anything that smells promotional, while not being aware that it is supposed to be a precision strike on some targets? Based on my other AFC reviews you should have been able to see that i already only blank copyvio's and negative BLP article's. Why this one is blanked then? Well, its easy to accidentally tick a check-box - clicking the check boxes text comment also toggle's it, so if you click half an inch under the comment box it will get accidentally checked.
