Administrators' newsletter – August 2023
News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2023).
Interface administrator changes
- The tag filter on Special:NewPages and revision history pages can now be inverted. This allows hiding edits made by automated tools. (T334338)
- Special:BlockedExternalDomains is a new tool that allows easier blocking of plain domains (and their subdomains). This is more easily searchable and is faster for the software to use than the existing MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. It does not support regex (for complex cases), URL path-matching, or the MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist. (T337431)
- The arbitration cases named Scottywong and AlisonW closed 10 July and 16 July respectively.
- The SmallCat dispute arbitration case is in the workshop phase.

On wiki, off wiki
Hi Andrevan. A user of your tenure should know better than to give "follow-the-breadcrumbs" outing threats to other users, as even though you don't explicitly make the connection it is still implied. If there are off-wiki outing/harassment issues that you believe are tied to an on-wiki editor, you should email ArbCom so that they can handle it appropriately. Primefac (talk) 06:14, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, to be clear that is not an outing threat, as there is no personal information or outing information. This is reference to a Wikipedia forum. I will email you the material. Andre🚐 07:33, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
- In case it's still unclear, I am not threatening to out the user or searching for info by them. They were posting things about me on a Wikipedia forum. Using the same username used here. I am not threatening to out the user or link to that or threatening any sort of personal oppo research. I am asking them to stop personally attacking me offwiki and informing them of that guideline, namely, that that can be somewhat held against them. Andre🚐 07:55, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
- But, if you still consider my message to be inappropriate, in light of me emailing you the post and explaining it, I will be happy to amend or remove my post(s), though as you can see, in my opinion I am trying to de-escalate and observe civility, and not making threats. Andre🚐 08:06, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
- The only thing I will say is that the site you emailed me is not "a Wikipedia forum". It is a forum about Wikipedia, and many Wikipedians participate there, but there is not always a 1:1 connection between editors here and there. I understand your point about the warning, of course, I guess I'm just asking you to be a little bit more vague in the future. Primefac (talk) 06:06, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

- Thanks. I'll check it out. But we should probably get together with the other editors and compile a detailed, well-sourced reliable rebuttal to the claims (however poorly understood or poorly argued) that they are making on the talk page. This can form an FAQ or addendum to the article or an essay as well. Andre🚐 20:05, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
Categorizing articles
Hello. As per your recent comments on the Editor Assistance page, I was hoping that you could help me resolve a dispute with another editor. Thedarkknightli recently undid an edit I made to Jennifer Connelly's page, citing the following guideline under WP:ETHNICRACECAT: “the ethnicity of grandparents (or other ancestors) is never defining and rarely notable.”
The edit in question can be found here.
As explained on Thedarkknightli's talk page, I'm somewhat confused as to why any category pertaining to ethnicity or ethnic descent would be limited to a person's parents only. His reasoning would make more sense to me if we were strictly talking about nationality, but ethnic descent has generally been understood to be synonymous with lineage. If categories by ethnic descent are limited to just parents (which, again, makes no sense to me), I have to wonder why they even exist in the first place.
In short, if there is any actual merit to the removal of the categories specified here, please confirm and explain why those changes made by Thedarkknightli were necessary. If he appears to have made them in error, however, I'd appreciate your assistance in trying to resolve the dispute. Thank you. Dr. Simon Hurt (talk) 04:01, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

August 2023
I got a comment from you regarding some equal weight thing in editting. This makes no sense as I have not even editted pages in recent months, and in fact the only activity I did recently on wikipedia was to put a very warranted pov warning label on a rather grotesquely biased page that was pushing a fringe narrative. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.131.5.103 (talk) 21:21, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
I reverted your vandalism on the Trump fake electors talk page. Just who the hell do you think you are to push a fringe narrative page while accusing others having the same and then vandalizing the post on the talk page so that people can't even talk about it?! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.131.5.103 (talk) 21:30, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Drive by IP came here to push that Trump "fake electors" were real. Andre🚐 22:02, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the thought, but since you also participated in your discussion, your close proposal only gives me more pause on such a "compromise" as essentially favoring your favored view as expressed; thanks, but no thanks, on behalf of myself who doesn't agree with the proposed read. A no consensus close might still find that certain things were agreed to in principle, or not agreed to, preserving the status quo of the article and the many years of hard work that contributors have dedicated to creating this obscure corner of the internet, and don't appreciate wikilawyering and gaming of the system to ruleslawyer in new changes to things that have stood for years.
- I didn't make a close request; I suggested that we not shut the discussion down for a week or two awaiting an RfC result but continue talking about the proposal. Not personal? Scare quotes implying the compromise was fake, suggesting that it was a result I favoured, the waspish tone, the implication that you are the only people who work hard on articles? 'wililawyering'? 'gaming the system'? 'ruleslawyer'? If you seriously do not see what was offensive and insulting about this response, there really isn't anything to say. Cheers, Last1in (talk) 23:01, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- If there wasn't anything to say, I find this discussion puzzling. You and another user who shared a POV tried to use IAR to close the discussion to a compromise without negotiating the points. Hurtful, in my view. Which is why I said what I said, which is not a personal attack at all, but a characterization of your statement that IAR should be used to close to the discussion. I do not know what waspish tone you refer to, but I think you are assuming too much if you think that I said I was the only person who worked hard. The point is we all contributed to the discussion and to suggest that we can simply use IAR to come down the side of your side, is, in my view, offensive. Andre🚐 23:05, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

- A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that
[s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment

- Special:Contributions now shows the user's local edit count and the account's creation date. (T324166)
- The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming
local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus
. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged tonote when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful
