Italians
[edit]Please DON'T change pre-Unification nationalities to the local state of the day. "Italian", like "German", is a concept that was recognised centuries before, and there is no need to change it. Johnbod (talk) 01:59, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- I noted I should not modify these data. Anatole-berthe (talk) 02:30, 29 October 2024 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for December 4
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Jagdgeschwader 131, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Döberitz. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

- Thanks ! I didn't knew how to use the function to give a bear. I like the symbolism behind the bear as an animal.
- The symbolism is something for which "I don't find a simple word to describe it".
- It make me think to life in community. I'm not certain but I think bears live in community.
- I have rather a very bad knowledge about wildlife. Anatole-berthe (talk) 18:01, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
Help desk and Teahouse advice
[edit]Hello, Anatole-berthe. Please don't take this badly, but I have been noticing your recent posts on the above advice desks, which I have been contributing to for approaching 20 years (no, I don't have an account; I choose not to).
I don't know how long (if at all) you've been editing on the Italian Wikipedia, but my impression is that you do not yet know enough about how this English Wikipedia works to be able to give good, non-confusing advice. (As you may or may not know, each language's Wikipedia is independent of any others, and their policies and procedures can differ in many ways.)
It is also obvious that your standard of English is not what querants on an English Help desk would expect. Nearly every post of yours I have read contains one or more spelling and/or grammar errors that cause me (a native English speaker) to stumble and re-read. This is not a problem when you contribute to articles, because there other editors will correct such mistakes, but on the Desks we are not allowed to do that.
You are of course free to ignore me and carry on – I'm just some bloke on the Internet, after all – but I think you (and the Help desk & Teahouse) would benefit from your holding back until both your Wiki-knowledge and your written English have improved. Thank you anyway for your enthusiasm and contributions so far. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 94.1.223.204 (talk) 18:04, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- I did never write anything on "Wikipedia in Italian".
- I collaborate only on "Wikipedia in English" and "Wikipedia in French".
- I wrote a request on "Wikipedia in Spanish". It was the only time I wrote something for a Wikipedia project outside of "Wikipedia in English" and "Wikipedia in French".
- I requested a contributor to modify an article because my level in Spanish isn't sufficient to do this.
- I used my few knowledge in this language and a dictionary "French-Spanish / Spanish-French" then "Google translate".
- French is my native tongue. English is a second language for which I'm far to be fluent.
- Spanish and others languages are third languages for which I'm far to reach a level of autonomy in writing similar to my level in English.
- For these third languages I can read some of these and understand a lot even if I don't know many words. For many of these I can understand only because of my knowledge of others languages. Therefore , I'm nearly unable to write as I need dictionaries and others ressources to write.
- About my skills in English language. I can understand fully nearly all things I read but I admit I'm far to master grammar , spelling and vocabulary while writing.
- Each language's Wikipedia is independent of any others, and their policies and procedures can differ in many ways.
- I know this. I'm far to master policies and procedures but which user master them fully ?
- I know the basics and I'm far to be an advanced user but I reached intermediate level and this is better than nothing.
- I share the few knowledge I had and I don't pretend to be an expert. As I don't want to confuse someone , I try to make detailed answers and invite the other being to interact.
- Dont' say you're just some bloke on the Internet, after all. You're a human behing the screen with his feelings and thinking and you shared these with me. Anatole-berthe (talk) 19:44, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, @Anatole-berthe. I came here to say something similar to the IP user. My problem is not so much your use of English, as that your advice often seems to me to be that of somebody who really really wants to help, but doesn't know (or perhaps doesn't understand) enough to give useful advice.
- An example is the post on the Help Desk WP:Help desk#Ahir cast surname add. The poster was asking in broken English about how to add a Gujarati surname somewhere. You assumed that they wanted to add it to the Gujarati Wikipedia - which may be the case, but there's no evidence for it. I assumed that they want to add it to an article in English Wikipedia, and looked for possible articles.
- Now, you may be right, and I may be wrong - if they reply, we'll find out. But if you are right, you really haven't given them any useful information. You might have pointed them to gu:આહીર, which is the article about Ahir in the Gujarati Wikipedia (I found this by going to Ahir, and looking at the "other language" tab). Normally I point people asking about other Wikipedias to the equivalent of the Help desk or the Teahouse, but I can't find such a page on gu-wiki.
- Then again, in WP:Help desk#1909 French publication out of copyright?, you answered a copyright question with "If you want , I can show you texts from French legislation and translate this into English for you". Well, yes you can, but you can find the information digested (and in English) at commons:Commons:Copyright rules by territory/France. Now, there's no reason why you should know that, if you haven't looked at copyright in Wikipedia (and Commons). But I rather doubt whether Chidgk1 found your reply very helpful.
- I'm delighted by your enthusiasm, and your wish to help; but I suggest you hold back for the moment until you know more about Wikipedia's ways of doing things. I hope you don't think I'm unwelcoming: that is not my intention. ColinFine (talk) 23:23, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
- I don't think you are unwelcoming.
- About "WP:Help Desk#Ahir cast surname add".
- I wasn't certain it was wrote in a broken English. I thought to the possibility it was in another language but certainly not in "Gujarati language" because of the script used. Gujarati isn't written in "Latin script".
- I thought it was maybe a language I can't identify. I didn't understood what the user want and I supposed it was maybe wrote in another language than English.
- About "WP:Help desk#1909 French publication out of copyright?". I acknowledge I didn't thought to look on Commons. Anatole-berthe (talk) 23:47, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
- Actually, the first post included the word "Gujrati", and also છૈડા, which is the name "Chhaida" in Gujerati script. Joyeux Noël! ColinFine (talk) 12:03, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
- I saw the word "Gujrati" at first reading but I didn't saw "છૈડા" because I'm not familiar with "Gujarati script".
- I'm not trained to see those characters when they appears.
- My level is low that I can't determinate when something is wrote in "Devanagari" or in another "Brahmic script" similars.
- I'm among these people unable to distinguish "Bengali–Assamese script" , "Devanagari" , "Gujarati script" and "Gurmukhi" because of a lack of knowledge in "Brahmic script".
- I know mainly the "Latin script" and "Cyrillic script" that I can read without any issue.
- I can read "Greek alphabet" with some troubles because I need to relearn it.
- I can read "Arabic script" and "Hebrew alphabet" with somes issues.
- I need to learn others scripts. As example among others there are the "Armenian alphabet".
- I have a list on my computer containing about 40 scripts to learn. Anatole-berthe (talk) 14:18, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- I forget to say I'm delight to see a "Merry Christmas" in French language addressed to me.
- I hope your christmas was good. I hope the year 2025 will be an excellent year for you. Anatole-berthe (talk) 14:23, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
