Mahmoud el-Meliguy
Hi Anas. Are you ready to publish User:Anas Salloum/Drafts/Mahmoud el-Meliguy? -- FayssalF - Wiki me up ® 16:06, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Fayssal, what's up? The article's not quite ready. I've still got some expanding and citing to do in the "Career" section, work which I completed a couple of days back when I unconsciously closed that page's tab, without saving! Devastating, I know. Don't worry, I'll be publishing it the second I'm done. :-) Cheers! - Anas Talk? 12:13, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Cinema
Congratualtions on getting the Egyptian film on the front page. Great!!! I bet there are still tons of missing notble films from Egypt. I have been filling in the lists of late, gratefully with the help of many users. HOwever I came across the Assamese cinema article which was only four lines long, which when compared to Bollywood articles looks shameful. I started Joymati and Phani Sarma which I aim to make B-class. After the Abbas Kiarostami ordeal I think my next conquest for a feature will be the The Maltese Falcon (1941 film) which I added most of the content to but needs some copyediting and condensing and referencing. I f I can get some people to help with this I think it look spromising. Hey you think 300 the film looks good? (THat dleltion nomination stil hasn't ended)!!!! ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 17:46, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Just thought I'd ask you about this, we have 6 users now, and I think that just starting the project page and writing down some goals would be beneficial. It's totally up to you when to begin with this, but I'm just thinking that having at least project goals written down will be a much needed first step. Thanks. Asabbagh 05:17, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

I have started a page model for the new project User:Ernst Stavro Blofeld/Film biography page model. Please note that it is still in its infancy stage and the templates have not been fully completed. {{Syria-bio-stub}}
Hi - I see you have recently created a new stub type. As it states at Wikipedia:Stub, at the top of most stub categories, and in many other places on Wikipedia, it is recommended that new stub types are proposed prior to creation at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, in order to check whether the new stub type is already covered by existing stub types, whether it is named according to stub naming guidelines, whether it reaches the standard threshold for creation of a new stub type, and whether it crosses existing stub type hierarchies. Your new stub type is currently listed at WP:WSS/D - please feel free to make any comments there as to any rationale for this stub type. And please, in future, consider proposing new stub types first! Grutness...wha? 03:58, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

No problem
Hi there Anas. Of course, no problems whatsoever if you use the WP:MESO design as a starting point for your new project- I see you've already made some handy developments for WP:SYRIA. You needn't have, but I appreciate you letting me know. And thanks for picking up on those couple of link errors- as I'm sure you'll find it is a neverending job keeping it all up to date, and no doubt you'll be able to make further improvements to the benefit of your project. Thanks again, and good luck with it all. Regards, --cjllw | TALK 00:18, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
WP tag
I am not sure if you are running an automatic bot or doing AWB manually, but try avoid tagging articles who will most probably fall out of the scope of WikiProject Syria like here [1] [2]. Or at least tag the ones who are obviously related to Syria automatically or manually using AWB, then do the others by hand. Cheers! Baristarim 02:13, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
Or like this one [3] :) Baristarim 02:19, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Barış. Actually, that's what I did. I only added obvious categories and set aside some others to be done manually; I might've not noticed Category:Assyrian settlements, which includes the articles. Please accept my apologies and do revert any other similar edits if you can find any. Thank you. :-) Regards, Anas talk? 02:22, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
- No worries :) I have been there, trying to sift through tons of articles trying to organize them all and getting frustrated, so I know how it is. Good luck! Baristarim 02:25, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Many thanks for the Barnstar! I look forward to the day when Middle Eastern co-operation is as fruitful as it (mostly) is on Wikipedia! Number 57 10:37, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
Paul Anka
Hi. Thank you for your note. I appreciate your providing reliable sources to support the assertion that Anka is of Syrian descent. The problem is, comparably reliable sources, such as the Washington Post, the CBC (here and here), and even a different Time magazine article, all state that he is of Lebanese descent. In the Post item, Anka is even quoted talking about Lebanon; he was in D.C. to receive a "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the American Task Force for Lebanon. Perhaps most compelling of all, Anka's official website says that he is of Lebanese descent.
Here is what I suggest we do. We change the text back to Lebanese descent and use the above sources. In one of the footnotes, we add this statement (along with your sources): "Note that some sources suggest that Anka is of Syrian, rather than Lebanese, descent." —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Vbd (talk • contribs) 21:51, 26 March 2007 (UTC).
- Hi again Vbd. I've implemented some changes which are most likely to please all sides. Thank you. Regards, Anas talk? 22:21, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Anas -- Thank you for adding that annotation and making the other changes to the article. I have made what I hope you will consider to be minor edits to the note. I also swapped the order in which you mention Time and the encyclopedia so that they match up with the order of the footnotes. Finally, please note that I added a discussion section on the talk page about this subject with the hope that it will help avoid future "edit wars" over this question. --Vbd (talk) 05:13, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Cinema in Egypt
Hi there, I remove them because they are not directly related to the topic and generally look badly. If they were templates including the names of the directors etc., then they should be included.--Thomas.macmillan 22:50, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
- Also, I removed the redundant categories. For example, if an article is in "Egyptian film actors", the article does not need to be in "Egyptian people" or "Egyptian actors" because the article is already in a more specific category.--Thomas.macmillan 22:57, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
- Although I agree that they are not directly related, the templates should be kept there. There was a huge discussion and the consensus was that these templates are helpful additions to the Egyptian cinema-related articles and other foreign, smaller cinema industries. Most of the articles, for example, of Egyptian actors and films are not well-connected. I believe the template will be of great help to maintain consistency in such articles. I also believe that the template might help draw attention to related articles and make navigation easier for interested readers. - Anas talk? 22:57, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
- Could you point me to this discussion? In my experience, it is unusual to put templates on articles which do not directly link to them (Political parties excluded). Perhaps a better way to organize the articles would be to make an {{Egypt-actor-stub}} or {{Egypt-film-bio-stub}}. I think these would be exceedingly useful, more than having a template with a few links on it. What do you think?--Thomas.macmillan 23:18, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
- Also, if you could refrain from just reverting my edits on the articles and re-add the template, that would be helpful because I am trying to empty the Category:Egyptian people--Thomas.macmillan 23:19, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Language tagging
Hi Anas, and thank you for catching those. The reason I put the tag on those is that the Malaysian language also uses the Arabic script. The tag is not just for Arabic language additions, but for any script that uses Arabic, like Somali or Divehi, where the Arab traders left their writing systems. Chris 00:28, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks re: Arabic MoS
Thanks, Anas, for the barnstar! You made my day! I'm in and out of Wiki depending on how heavy my course workload is, so I just found this. -- I am still curious about the "solar letters" thing. This isn't a criticism in anyway, but everyone I've asked about it has never heard of this terminology so I'm quite interested in where/ from whom you learned this particular way of describing the sun/moon letters. :-) warm regards. Cyg-nifier 19:35, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, don't mention it. I guess I learned about it from the Internet, see this UN document. It also makes sense to me since it's a correct translation. By the way, we'll need to modify the MoS some time. I'm swamped this period with work on WP:SY. Cheers, Anas talk? 20:34, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- Good reference article. Shame the Arabic script doesn't remain in the pdf. I'll have to print it out and write in the Arabic letters to capture all it says. Perhaps in thinking about the solar/sun references, one might think about what "correct translation" means. (Again, I'm in pondering mode here, not criticizing). In Arabic, for ex., the name of a bridge across Dubai "Creek" is literally "Bridge Garhoud" or "Bridge of Garhoud" --in English, it is standardly called Garhoud Bridge. The same would apply for street names, airports, etc. 'cause in Arabic the typical order is noun-adjective while in English it is adjective-noun. Another point to consider-- the author of the UN working paper is definitely an expert in Arabic, but not so much an expert in English. The writing is nowhere near native-English level, so it seems a bit chancey to rely on him in that area. I'll do more exploring on this--such a curious question. warmly, Cyg-nifier 21:59, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- Valid points, but what you say actually supports my opinion. You say that the typical order is noun-adjective while in English it is adjective-noun, and this the case in āḥrof shamsīyyah (noun-adjective) which in English is likely to be solar letters (adjective-noun), right? Anyway, I'll be eagerly awaiting your research on the matter. :-) All the best, Anas talk? 22:43, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hmmm -- Bridge of Garhoud --> to Garhoud Bridge. Letters of the sun --> sun letters. :-) With "lunar" letters, one would also lose the "m" of "moon" that makes the designation clear. I'll keep looking though. Most of the uses of "solar" that I've found on-line derive from wiki sources or from one other source that is plagiarized all over the place (I'm still trying to track down the original source). Sources from blogs don't hold credibility for this, so I suspect that I'll shift to printed material and chat with a selection of colleagues from different countries where Arabic is common. more later, Cyg-nifier 01:32, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- No, it's letters solar --> solar letters. It's similar to siyyarah sari`a (car fast) --> fast car. Like I said in WP:AMOS, the terms solar and lunar letters might be correct but the more commonly used and endorsed terms are sun and moon letters. So I'm pretty sure that your research's conclusions will probably lean to sun and moon. Regards, Anas talk? 01:52, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Greek-Egyptian co-productions
Hi Anas! I was filling up the early years of Greek films and I found out that around 1937-1943 there were some Greek, Greek-Egyptian films directed by Togo Mizrahi. Can you take a look at his filmography [4]? If he is a prominent figure in Egyptian cinema, maybe we could start a biography? Hoverfish Talk 22:00, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Hoverfish. I don't think he's a prominent figure, just a director — who is not Egyptian. Then again, I'm not much of an Egyptian cinema buff. True I write about its films but I don't have that much information. My opinion is that if you can find the sources to verify his notability, why not, you can create it. I'm probably not going to be able to do that since real life is busying me this week and because right now in Wikipedia, I have a bunch of more important things to do. FYI, some huge, truly prominent and way more important Arab and Egyptian superstars don't have articles here. It's a shame there isn't that much activity from Arab users here. Regards, Anas talk? 23:52, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Anas, Thanks for welcoming me on my talk page. I assume it has been pro-forma, as I have been active editing several pages already. You can check my contributions, if you like. So far, I don't think I've done anything particularly controversial, mostly minor copyediting. I have pust some work into the page on glans, though, and I think the quality is somewhat better, though still in need of a few references. Wouldn't mind someone checking it out. I guess that's my one big question - how do I get some editorial suggestions on the page? Thanks again --Esseh 20:29, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- Hi again, you might want to check out the article on flatulence. I have twice reverted it today to remove the same vandalism, only to have it twice reverted to the same vandalism by (apparently) different users. If this was an April Fool's Day joke, it is in poor taste. However, not wanting to break the "3 revert rule", I am forced to leave the same stupidity there. Oh, and the vandals were registered users, and not just IP adresses. Just curious how to handle a situation like this. Thanks. --Esseh 11:33, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
- Um, you seem to add the vandalism again, not remove it. See this diff. The article currently has no vandalism. You were reverted because you reverted the reversion of the original vandalism. Confusing, I know. - Anas talk? 11:46, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

There, tried to make up for it by adding a couple of interesting tidbits and making a minor correction. Damned if I can remember the name of the Darwin biography I read one of the tidbits in, though. Think it was called The Origin, or some such. Will look it up. Esseh 12:44, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
