Regarding your change to the Victoria article -- please look at bar 18 in the cantus: http://www.upv.es/coro/victoria/pdf/Sancta_Maria_Succurre_Miseris.pdf -- it's a diminished fourth, not diminished fifth. The diminished fourth appears in Renaissance music, especially late in the 16th century, as an exceptional interval denoting some strong sentiment, particularly grief.
