(A) CONTENT
Good introduction. Consider adding a heading at the top of the "Contents" box and placing it beneath that box.

  • Prison Population and Cost to Society
  • There's statistics from 2012, 2007, and 2010 in this section...is there more updated statistics for the total corrections expenditures and/or the number of youth in detention facilities?
  • Contributing Factors to Incarceration
  • Substance Use Disorder prevention or treatment
  • "There is a disproportionate amount of money spent on tertiary measures compared to prevention and treatment despite drug treatment being far more cost effective than the price of incarceration." --Is this from the National Institute on Drug Abuse as well? (add citation)
  • Mental health access/treatment
  • "This further complicates the process of rehabilitations and suggests a direct correlation between a decrease in mental health services and facilities, and an increase in the proportion of mental health diagnosis in the prison system." (add citation)
  • Consider talking about how we treat individuals with substance abuse problems as criminals and lock them up with the expectation that they’ll get over it without ever having access or going through any treatment.
  • Education
  • "Theoretically, policies aimed at subsidizing education will pay off in the long run by increasing skill level and building social capital.” (add citation)
  • There should be a ton of research on the correlation between education and incarceration...you’re off to a good start! See if you can add some more to this section. Good link to the School-to-prison pipeline page as well.
  • Factors Involving Race (add citation)
  • This would be a good spot to put in the current demographics of those in the prison system and compare it to the demographics of the country to show the racial disparities (because they’re ridiculous). i.e. If 30% of the current U.S. population is African American and/or Hispanic, these two races should not comprise 58% of the prison system.
  • Incarceration Prevention
  • ”Incarceration prevention refers to a variety of methods aimed at reducing prison populations and costs while fostering enhanced social structures for the betterment of society. Incarceration prevention can take place in any of three stages: Primary Prevention, Diversion, or Recidivism Prevention.” (add citation)
  • Prevention
  • ”Primary prevention is an attempt to reduce the risk of behaviors that potentially lead to incarceration. The initial stage in this model includes looking at system wide or systemic approaches that ensure people have consistent social and structural interactions.” (add citation)
  • Safety Nets
  • "Studies suggest that crime and violence are likely to be a byproduct of, among other things, economic inequality and poverty." (add citation)
  • Youth Justice
  • ”Often, primary prevention can be viewed...school environment" (add citation to this paragraph)
  • Diversion
  • ”Diversion is an attempt to circumvent incarceration and correct problem behaviors after an offense has been committed through alternatives to incarceration” (Need citation for this definition).
  • Deferred Sentencing/Jail Diversion
  • Consider offering a brief explanation of each of the bullet points so people can get the just of what they’re about by looking at your page.
  • Recidivism Prevention
  • It might be good to link the term “recidivism” to its wikipedia page.
  • Prison Reform
  • ”Prison reform seeks to advocate for programming...leave the facility” (Need citation for this paragraph)
  • PRI - Prisoner Re-entry Initiatives
  • Juvenile Confinement Rates on Steady Decline
  • Are there any other states doing good work with diversion program for juveniles in addition to OH?
  • Other Methods of Incarceration Prevention
  • Consider offering a brief explanation of each of the bullet points so people can get the just of what they’re about by looking at your page.

(B) FIGURES
Effective table, just add a citation. Consider also adding a table showing racial disparities between the population of the U.S. compared to the demographics prison population.

(C) CITATIONS
21 citations. Good work.
