Before you move this to mainspace, you'll need to establish notability. (It doesn't look like that's a major problem.) You need to change your headers from all caps to proper noun (lead cap only). I also notice a missed piped link (indentured, which goes like this: [[Apprenticeship|indentured]]), which also needs its capitalization fixed. :D It looks to me mostly small things. The biggie IMO is lack of reliable sources (a perennial problem), esp with living people. I don't see anything unfixable, tho. Hi TREKphiler - thanks for your advice and help. I've had another go, fixed your suggestions and managed to find some external references to back up the content. My next question is about categorisation...is there a list of categories that I can select from? Hopefully this will soon be ready to publish :-)

(AlithM (talk) 18:18, 30 December 2010 (UTC))[reply]

I don't know of a list of cats, but have a look at related subjects: country & city of birth ("people born in 'x'"), profession, so forth. You'll find ones related easily enough. Also, you'll want to tag the talk page when you move it with, at a minimum, {{WPBIO}} & {{WikiProject [science field]}}. (Do yourself a favor & create a sandbox for those; you're liable to find empty talk pages the longer you're here, & it's easier just to copy-paste the right project than type it in. :D) Am I right this is a first page? (Those have a certain pride attached, I know. ;p) You might want to add a userbox to your page for pages you've created; if you want the one I created, find my page & steal it. :D (Just substitute the pagename.) Customizing the color (if you don't like it :( :( ;p) is easy enough, if you want; just ask. TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 20:53, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - Happy New Year - and yes, this IS my first page! Pretty obvious huh? Being a total newbie, not sure what you're talking about re tagging the talk page, empty talk pages, the <nowiki> etc etc... oh dear, actually I have NO idea what all that is and the help guides are an encyclopedia in themselves! I assumed that by asking the questions BEFORE I published, noone would have to see them once I'd got things sorted??? Or am I being too optimistic that my inexperience won't be made public lol? Meanwhile, I've added some categories... all thoughts, help etc very gratefully received as ever! :-\ (AlithM (talk) 15:45, 2 January 2011 (UTC))[reply]

♠Happy New Year! And there are guideline pages (I've just never actually read them. :( ) Also Manuals of Style for each project (ditto :( ). (Mostly, if you copy an existing page, you'll be OK.)
฿To try & explain some. Talk pages are usually home to the Project banner (in your case, {{WPBIO}} ). Where there's crossover, again like yours, there will be multiple banners ("tags"); adding them is commonly called "tagging". Empty links (or redlinks) are empty pages: talk pages for new pages are frequently empty (red). (Check your sidebar for "new pages" & have a glance at some of them. While you're there, you can patrol a few & help clear the backlog. :D ) The "nowiki" is just to keep the project tags from displaying; close the page & copy-paste on your new talk page to use them; if you're taking them from other pages, you can copy the whole thing, just delete the page-specific items (assessments & such). (You'll see what I mean if you look at some of them.) If you're not sure what to copy, just add the Project name in the wikimarkup above (paste it in your talk page first) in place of "(science)" & you're good to go. (Is that at all clear? ;p)
§No worries about being a noob, or asking "dumb" questions. It's better than leaving somebody else to clean up a mess. (See the new page patrol for some of those. 80 ;p ) WP can be a bit daunting, so...
₯Saying that, I'm reminded, have you set your preferences? (Otherwise, finding the sidebar could be a bit hard. 80 )
₰Can I offer a wikikquette tip? Follow a reply with a deeper indent on reply. (That's done with nested ":" starting the line, sometimes with "*" or "#". I also sometimes use the symbols menu to "bullet" {like now... ;p} when I don't want to mess with the indentation, which "*" can do. And pick "bullets" that actually make it easier to read... ;p {I didn't, on purpose.}) Yes, Virginia, it gets even more complicated... ;p It's a lot about just watching what other editors are doing & copying them, & sometimes, not copying them. ;p TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 23:26, 2 January 2011 (UTC) (P.S. It's a violation of wikiquette, but I had to refactor you: the "nowiki" you put in was screwing up the markup... And trying to fix it, I managed to screw up your original sig. :( :( No major damage done, tho. {User contribs saves me. :) })[reply]

":" Ok - I think I've started the talk page and have set my preferences (I think!) - but the rest??? Oh and who is Virginia??? (Or is that a catchphrase that's not used in the uk?) - and sorry - still don't understand the "nowiki" stuff - this really is like trying to learn a new language or do maths - neither of which are my strong points! :-( (AlithM (talk) 11:35, 3 January 2011 (UTC))[reply]

♠Have another look at the line start for indent. (You got the idea right, but not the markup. :( You don't need ♠ to make it work; that's just for bulleting.)
♠The "nowiki" is a markup that "locks out" the regular markup so it doesn't operate. It's used so you can show how to do something.
♠Now, a test to see how much you've learned. ;p If you've got preferences set, you should see a string of links on the page: Main Page, Contents, down to My Watchlist, My Page, My Talk, down to New Pages. (Worry about "more" when you've found these, 'cause those are more specialized & less often useful.) You should also have a different page appearance than the default setting (unless you like the default, of course :D). When the page opens for editing, you should also get a taskbar with Bold, Ital, & Special Characters. (You may have to reset preferences to get this.) That's where the icons I used are coming from. Have you got {{WPBIO}} on the talk page? (For a start. And see what I mean about the nowiki?) Any other projects?
♠Let me be very clear: it's easier to help if you ask specifically. I'll go over it as often as you need, no worries there.
♠As for "Virginia", that's a cross-cultural thing. It's a story told over here (Canada): "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus". I didn't think about where you were. :( TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 22:11, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
♦ I am SO relieved there IS a Santa Clause!
♦ Is this OK for the indent?
♦ By "markup" - do you mean the coding?
♦ Re your test - as I managed to find a diamond, I'm assuming I passed?!?!? I've got {{WPBIO}} on the talk page - or it seems to be labelled Discussion, which is why I might have been confused. Other projects - I've got a red link so that I can do one on Lapido Media, the organisation that Jenny Taylor founded.
♦ So - the million-dollar question... can I publish?????? ;-)

(AlithM (talk) 22:27, 3 January 2011 (UTC))[reply]

One biggie: you should have used nowiki on {{WPBIO}} here (& apologies, I refactored you), because it comes up on the project page somehow, & this isn't a page within the project. When it goes on the actual talk page, leave off the nowiki. (Yes, you're right, markup is operating coding. Sorry. :( ) Yes, you pass with an A+ (I'm showing off now. ;p)
Two, I'd tag for the WikiProject of the science she specializes in. (It's formally a "discussion" page, but I've never heard anybody call it that. ;p)
Three, your indent should be one ":" more than the one above you. (If you're way over on the right of the page, you can use {{od}} to go back to the left again.) Also, & this may just be me, I'd add your signature right after your last comment, rather than a separate line. (You can see the difference here; I prefer the "neatness". I'll leave it to you.)
Are you ready to go? You sure are!
It's a quirk of mine, but I watchlist every page I create. (Most are so low-traffic, they maybe get edited a dozen times a year each, if that. :( )
Your next mission: score 10000 here. ;p
As noted, see my page if you want the userbox. Bump my talk page if you've got more questions, ever. It's been a pleasure doing business with you. :D TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 23:24, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
ℳIt's not over yet - I can't seem to move it!!!! Apologies....but I still need help!
ℳI clicked on the arrow and then Move... and it says I can't do that.. :-(
ℳPlease tell me I'm not bottom of the class - I promise I'll do better next time Sir! (AlithM (talk) 23:34, 3 January 2011 (UTC))[reply]
You're hitting a redirect page. This needs an admin to fix. I can post a request on the WPBIO page, or you can. (Actually IMO, you should, since it's your page.) Just ask an admin to delete the redirect for your new page. You should probably include a piped link ([[User:AlithM/Jenny Taylor|like this]]) so the admin knows what's going to get moved. (IDK if you still get trouble 'cause you're new. If so, bump my talk; I'm taking you off watchlist, so I won't see it again.)
I should say there are other ways to go about fixing this, but you probably should avoid those until you know more: turn the redirect into a dab page, or copy paste into the redirect page. They both create a problem, because you've got to know why there's a redirect. Also, copy-pasting breaks the page history, which is frowned on. You will probably run into cases where it will be OK to do it, but that's more "master class" stuff, so don't worry about it for now. ;p TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 23:47 & 23:57, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Could you pls do this? Otherwise I can see we are going to b e going back and forth for days! it's nearly midnight here and my brain is fried! I will be dreaming about markups and indents and symbols - in fact they are are already all merging into one blob as I write. Not very techie I know! (AlithM (talk) 23:52, 3 January 2011 (UTC))[reply]
Sorry, I'm leaving this one to you. Your page. It doesn't have to be this second, after all... ;p It'll still be here tomorrow. TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 23:57, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok - but where do I find the right WPBIO page? I've already published it... :-( (AlithM (talk) 00:06, 4 January 2011 (UTC))[reply]

Since I had a hunch you'd still need help, I'm back... :D (You will need to learn to find talk pages for people, tho. :( Not everybody will watchlist your talk for replies.) To find the project page(s), take a look at the published Bio page. There's a link to the Project. Go there, then to the Project talk page. (Beware posting requests & questions on the Project page, which is all to easy to do. I've done it by mistake a couple of times.... :( :( :( ;/) Then post the request in a new section at the bottom, per usual for talk pages. If you want to know when it's ready, or what the status is, watchlist the project page when you post your reply (check the box under the edit summary); you may get a note when it's moved, or not. It may take a long time to get done, too. If you're in a hurry, post a request at the Project pages for her science, too. (BTW, where'd you put it? Not a copy-paste into the redirect, I hope? Tho there are worse ways....) TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 09:11 & 09:13, 6 January 2011 (UTC) (P.S. Since I have a hunch you don't know where to find my talk page, but you didn't ask...I'll watchlist this again, briefly. Never be concerned about asking an apparently dumb question... ;p 09:18, 6 January 2011 (UTC))[reply]

♦HI!! :D Your hunch was correct. Anyway I put it into the Talk page of the article... and there is a conversation going on. I think they are now waiting for an admin to disambiguate or something... I am wondering whether it was wise to even suggest an entry in Wikipedia - it's SOOO complicated! (But I've sort of enjoyed it in a peverse way...I like solving puzzles! :-) (AlithM (talk) 12:58, 6 January 2011 (UTC))[reply]
♠There's a lot of little things to remember, but it gets much easier after you've been here awhile. And the community's pretty friendly, mostly. (The vandals are a pain, ;( :( but...) You'll find some really informed people, & I like that part a lot.
♠I find, if you need formatting or style on something, the best way is just copy what's been done already: look for a related topic, copy the style, copy the tags, whatever. It saves a lot of headaches. :) Also, I find keeping templates is a help, so I don't have to try & remember the formatting (or get it right typing in manually, which I'm terrible at :( :( ). As for what templates are, they're a standard formatting markup, like you find for Project pages. There's a bunch of them for unit conversions (some samples in my sandbox; if you're interested, go throuh my userpage to my sandbox {just follow the links}); I copied & saved a few for my own use, 'cause they're sometimes hard to keep straight to get 'em to work right (& they're fussy about exact formatting...).
♠Let me suggest you also create a userpage, & your own sandbox. You're liable to want the sandbox soon enough, if you plan on working on pages beyond fairly simple entries, or on more than one of the same type of page. (I did it to save retyping the same stuff over & over & over... ;p Which means I've got to be careful about changing the relevant stuff, which I've occasionally missed. :( )
♠FYI, finding talk pages for people is pretty easy. 2 ways: click the username & go to "discuss", just like an article page, or click the 2d part of the signature. (Lots of users keep "talk", but some get fancy, like I did. {I did leave a hint for Trekkers, but if you're not a fan, less clear, maybe. :( })
♠And finally, not to beat it to death or make you feel dumb, but, ask anything you don't get. I can't help if I don't know what you need to find, & I'm happy to point you when I can.
♠So, your next mission is, find my talk page & bump it. Cheers. TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 22:21, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
