Hello Ali K! Yes, I did put Good Morrow on purpose. I hope my answer was very useful to you! I have answered your gerberas question but I am afraid I don't live in Perth. I sort of figured out you were a women but you don't state it on your user page!!! --XenoNeon 15:19, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

Edit summaries

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labelled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature. When you leave the edit summary blank, some of your edits could be mistaken for vandalism and may be reverted, so please always briefly summarize your edits, especially when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you. This especially applies when editing someone else's user page! If you have any questions or need any help, please get in touch on my talk page. Thanks! ➨ ReDVERS 10:05, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Userboxes and Colors

Sure! Here's the List of colors, although you can make your own by fiddling with with the hexadecimal value (a "#" plus six numbers or letters from 0 to e). What I usually did in the past is copy and paste the user box from somewhere else replace the parts I didn't want with what I do want on a template.

Templates are also pretty easy, just go over to that bar that says search, type in "template:" and whatever you want to call it after the colon and then put in the stuff you just copy, pasted, and replaced. That way instead of all that gobbledy gook, you can just put in the template.

For example, let's say you named the template "bob", if you wanted to put the template on your page and you made a template for it called Template:Bob, all you'd need to do is put in {{bob}}. karmafist 16:52, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

Color Usability

You might want to review Wikipedia:WikiProject Usability with respect to color combinations that are legible to older Internet users. The reality is that as we get older, it becomes more dificult to see text when it is light text color on a dark color background. There may be some settings we can do on our browser to combat this ... if so, I not yet learned how. User:AlMac|(talk) 10:58, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Biomedical Engineering

Hi Ali, thanks for your message. I think there's an increasing need for biomedical engineering, particularly as, with more people getting to an older age, there will be a greater need for artificial joints, prostheses, etc - these are all areas that a biomedical engineer might get greatly involved in. Also other interesting things such as hearing aids, artificial eyes etcetera. In another 7 or 8 years, there will definitely be at least as big a need for biomedical engineering, and probably more.

I would advise you to make sure you keep up your studies on both maths and physics, as these are probably the main areas you need to be solid in for any engineering subject. Any computing knowhow you can pick up will be useful, also. If you change your mind at a later date (as 3 years is a long time), the skills you'd pick up in those three subjects would stand you in very good stead for many kinds of career and further study.

As far as engineering goes, probably the best thing to look into would be some kind of work experience in a few years as you finish high school. Any practical experience you can get would be useful.

I don't know how many biomedical engineers are female in total, but it's the highest percentage out of any engineering subject (for example, there were 9 people on my degree course, and 5 were female). And thanks for the kind words on the photo - I pinched it from someone else, but can't remember who ... :)

All the best, Proto t c 15:05, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

Hey!

Hey - and thanks for the student userbox comment. It seems rather good, but my main concern is the bright colours, as for some users this may clash with their userpage theme. Ian13ID:540053 14:04, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

Female users

Hi! I noticed you made you're own Female user box. Just to let you know, we've just made an "official" one (not that anything's really official) at {{User female}}, which also slots you automatically into Category:Female Wikipedians. Feel free to use it and/or edit it! — Asbestos | Talk (RFC) 14:18, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

DYO User boxes

You might see some of someone elses boxes that I tried adapting. I havent got the colours right yet, but - if you're still keen there might be an idea or two. Happy Christmas anyway vcxlor 14:51, 16 December 2005 (UTC) It wasnt pride, i'd pinched it from User:Snottygobble/drew and hadnt resized. I'm still struggling with some of the internal bits to put colour into the right hand boxes. probably a bit like your Tiger !!  :) vcxlor 04:18, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

Apologies, not very clear. On my user page - most of which has been 'borrowed' from others, I had a stage where I was inventing boxes - my goat, cat, children, etc and I ended up with the same colour in the boxes, mainly because I didnt have a handle on what I had 'borrowed' - still experimenting, - and I think some ofthe clues are on your talk page with info from others, I just havent had the time to go through it all!! Too busy prowling wiki for catneeded arts (sounds like tiger activity) Hope that's a better explanation! vcxlor 04:31, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

Shenton Park

Hiya, I'm pretty sure the source was here. It gets a bit confusing with all these government areas and suburbs, but if you can correct any wayward facts then go for it. cheers Nachoman-au 09:59, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

Your Pal AlMac

I am a just over age 60 male, who often have only limited time to do anything on Wiki, so help out at Reference Desk such as Wikipedia:Reference desk/Science if no time for anything else. So that's how come I looking at your page ... I found out about userboxes because of you. They are so cool. I am going to plagarize some of your stuff for my page & of course I will give you credit. Thanks. User:AlMac|(talk) 09:41, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

I award this Barnstar to Wiki Ali K for her cool userbox contributions.
  • Is there a page you can link me to that explains the coding rules for the Userboxes?
    • As you might see, I tried unsuccessfully to copy your box on "This user answers questions at the Reference Desk"
      • Well I kept experimenting, and finally got it to work to a level that made me happy.
      • Quite possibly your edits fixed the stuff.
    • I basically copied what you had on your page, then I changed the text contents, and twiddled several times to try to get it to come out right ... I think I may have had a typo with respect to special symbols like | those square brackets pointing in which direction, or the correct # each way.
      • I thought the Wiki Project image was supposed to be a hand dipped into something, but it kind of looks like someone pants fallen down, so another image would be preferrable (less ambiguity of interpretation).
      • While I do computer programming, very little of it is in script.
  • Is this concept something you invented, or did you copy the idea from place else?

I recognize you saying that "everyone does it" so I need not give credit to YOU for being the oen I learned about it from. I have got in the habit of trying to give credit when I can, and perhaps I go overboard sometimes, compared to other people habits. User:AlMac|(talk) 10:01, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

I want to use this image http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Accesibility.png#file but my efforts to put it on my page ,,, I just go from bad to worse in my edit efforts. User:AlMac|(talk) 11:33, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

I copied what you gave me. Yes exactly right. Thanks again. User:AlMac|(talk) 12:15, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

I copied. I now printing out the Wikipedia:Userboxes to study. Actually right now is long past my bed time so I will need to continue this later. I am on USA Central Daylight Savings Time. I do a lot of my work Telecommuting, and tomorrow I do need to be awake alert mid day. I often go on Wiki after I have completed my work day which is swing shift, and got interested in stuff longer than was wise. User:AlMac|(talk) 12:23, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

You got me interested in images practical to include ... you might want to put  Australia some place on your main User page? User:AlMac|(talk) 13:46, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Since I having trouble with color combinations (a sign of old age), I cannot read what the Icon is that is beside the statement that you are Australian. Sorry.

You replied at 9 am Wiki time which is 8 am my time & yes, I have not yet been to sleep after Monday nite work. User:AlMac|(talk) 14:04, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Right ... what I calling Wiki time is really labeled UTC time, which if I remember correctly is influenced by user preferences, which do not have a provision for Daylight Savings Time so if I am reading this correctly.

  • 9 am US Central time is same time as
  • 2 pm Perth Australia time

That assumes you got your user preferences set correctly User:AlMac|(talk) 21:40, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

"old fogie" out of practice as a student

At your convenience please look at my 2 pictures effort where I have been unsuccessfully trying to reverse engineer what should not be rocket science. User:AlMac|(talk) 02:53, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

Well that has been fixed thanks tu User:Cernen help. I can't say I learned what I was doing wrong. However, on another front, I think I have made major progress in making my overall User Page look more readable and interesting. User:AlMac|(talk) 11:24, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

student passing grade

I took some user boxes off my page after I saw, from other user pages, what I thought were nicer ways to display key data.

  • Very top of my user page, first block of user boxes, very bottom of that first list. When my edit count significantly above 2000, and I happen to notice it close to some round numbers, or perhaps in proximity to some other major holiday or anniversary (like my birthday perhaps), I may slide in another scoring check point just above the 2000 mark.
  • Season's Greetings ... I will need to change this pretty soon to something more focused on year 2006.
  • Way down at the bottom, why I love this place.

User:AlMac|(talk) 11:25, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

My interests jump around a lot

Thanks to the Userbox War, I now am watching the Administrator Incident page, but I have managed to avoid being a target in the no human's land, perhaps because I still am somewhat of a trainee feeling some issues need to be left to those more experienced in the project and its software. This as peaked my curiousity about other matters.

Harvard Law students have a small Wiki in association with the WP Wikiproject Cyberlaw so I helped out a little there, and the leader of the group of groups seems to approve of my proposed actions then my implementation of them.

Then User:The Neokid suggested something, and I suggested that a Wikiproject might be the best way to approach that, so now I have helped out a little with Helping Hand Group because I feel there are some gaps that need filling.

  • WP is a bit hostile to some brand new arrivals, with the risk of causing potential volunteers to turn away and never contribute.
  • As I try to explain in the talk page of that project, tutorials need to address many needs of people different places on learning curves. It is the reason why a lot of people do not read documentation that comes with computer products. There is a science to this, and a lot of people are self-taught, missing many nuances.

I am still at the stage of defining scope of what I think needs to be done, or tackled. User:AlMac|(talk) 23:09, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Aquarius

The default shows up to my eyes via Microsoft Exploder (I am not on Netscrape Navigator or one of the other Browsers) as totally black except for the illustration ... I made multiple efforts to try to figure out how to fix the color & eventually just gave up on that. User:AlMac|(talk) 09:48, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

Your Old Friend

You may notice that I now have the Wikipedia Signpost to the right of the Table of Contents on my User Page, in which the first section, in the TOC, is above the TOC. This is deliberate. Figuring out placement of some stuff is yet another thing I figured out how to do, and quite happy with this. I expect that the Signpost headlines will fluctuate periodically. Yeah, you are welcome to change the colors however you like. The reason I put white behind the image, however, is because there is a slight white background to the image. I would reccommend leaving the image side white, or editing the image to have a new (or transparent) background. As long as it looks good, though, you can do whatever strikes you. -- Chris 20:52, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

Mourne Mountains

Thanks for your comments regarding Mourne Mountains. The way the voting's going I'm beginning to think the picture is adequate for the Mourne Mountains page but not really Featured Picture standard. The picture is taken from about 25km, I might take your advice and take a closer picture in the future. The reason I chose the location (St. John's Point) was that I thought it would give the best overall perspective. The view from closer to Newcastle is very imposing and it might, as you say, give some idea of height. Regards Mark83 13:27, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Re:It's Gone

Does seem a bit of a mystery. In fact, that's an understatement; I've haven't a clue where mine is gone! It's probably tucked away, hidden somewhere. And also, a happy Australia day to you--M W Johnson 09:45, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi there! When you create an article, you might take a moment to add it to a category to sort it with similar articles. Just add [[Category:Australian children's television series]] or [[Category:Australian poets]] to the bottom of the article. When you hit preview, check the very bottom of the screen (below the edit box) to make sure the links are blue. (If they're not, you might try making the cats more general or rephrasing them, or browsing categories to see what you find.)

You don't actually have to do this, someone else will eventually do it later if you don't, but I thought you might like to know. NickelShoe 02:02, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

It would be better if you did, though. This feature extremely improves the quality of your edits. --Young XenoNeon (converse) 19:04, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Ali K/Archive 1, thanks for participating in my RfA discussion. If you decided to oppose me at this time, then I hope that if I do choose to reapply in the future, the effort I will make in the meantime to improve and expand my contributions to Wikipedia may persuade you to reconsider your position. hi..... here are the lyrics for the song you asked......

Perfect Highway

Chorus: i'm going down the highway, dreaming of the world and the pain, i'm running through the highway, reasoning my life so stained, but love is just a fiction, making my heart to give way, this feeling of distruction, taking my mind to die away.

Verse: This soul is in the world for a day or two, the disease has driven my veins right through, i wish it was a dream but its true, and i chose death than live a world thats cruel, {So, take me high, just lift me up, O special one, why is it me? } (x2)

Verse: why have you come to make me feel good, you've taken my hands, from the place i stood, lets run away from home, but if i could, this disease wont stop, its so rude, {so, leave my hands, just let me go, the simple thing, its a novacoaine.} (x2)

Chorus: i'm going down the highway, dreaming of the world and the pain, i'm running through the highway, reasoning my life so stained, but love is just a fiction, making my heart to give way, this feeling of distruction, taking my mind to die away.

Let us try an experiment. Until further notice, the voting system will be open, using the method described in the Guidelines. This will make us understand how reliable the current system is and whether the project has a real possibility to expand into hundrends of users or not.

All users are encounaged to display the {{BestUserPage}} banner on their User Page.

All members all encouraged to display the {{BUP}} banner in their User Page, and also notify that the project has started.

We will refer to the votes for this first session as "March 2006" in the archive.

Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member, you might be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. A spam list is maintained by Redwolf24 to keep members up to date; you might want to consider adding your name to the list. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee , KnowledgeOfSelf, JoanneB, Titoxd and FireFox. The elections have ended.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact me via email or talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to be!

Thanks!

Wikiproject Perth

You said

Hi there, i just stopped by to say hello and to welcome you to the Wikiproject Perth. I hope you are able to help us to make Perth related articles better! --Ali K 00:21, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. I lived in Perth for two years in quite a few different areas, such as Noranda/Ballajura, Warwick/Greenwood/Balcatta, Armadale, Northam, and Bunbury, and my wife is from Perth, hence my interest in joining the group. I hope I can help out and if there are any areas where expansion of an article is badly needed or would be very beneficial, be sure to let me know, and I'll do as much as I can. Until then, I'll probably poke around the suburb articles and other articles from the list where I can help. Thanks again! -- Renesis13 03:34, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Psst

I'm trying to build support for this nomination in its last few days. Please check out this page. Pass it along. Nudge nudge. -- evrik 20:34, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Annual report
Hello!

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways, from comparing articles that need work to other articles you've edited, to choosing articles randomly (ensuring that all articles with cleanup tags get a chance to be cleaned up). It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. Your contributions make Wikipedia better -- thanks for helping.

If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please tell me on SuggestBot's talk page. Thanks from ForteTuba, SuggestBot's caretaker.

P.S. You received these suggestions because your name was listed on the SuggestBot request page. If this was in error, sorry about the confusion. -- SuggestBot 03:50, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Your support is needed..!!!

Hii...

Sorry about this....but a page Spawn Man had created and put as a sub-page on his user page has been put up on AfD.... i really see nothing wrong in the page but still people are fighting over it.... and SpawnMan has lost all faith in Wikipedia.... It'd really be nice of you if you could lend your support to Keep the page....as it does not violate any rules of user pages... any kind of support would be truly appreciated...... Thanks a lot!!! Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

You are my friend!

Of course, you don't have to accept it. Just leave it on your talk page to rot, if you want. Sceptre (Talk) 17:11, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
