Re: Barry Ptolemy

[edit]

You can start a page about Barry Ptolemy by clicking on the red link and adding material, however, you may want to consider starting it in your user space first. You would do this by editing User:Alexanderxerxes/Barry Ptolemy. When you've finished, you can move it to the article space. Doing it this way will allow you to learn how to write a Wikipedia biography without worrying about maintenance issues. Viriditas (talk) 21:40, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can edit this "practice" article below. BTW, if you are Barry Ptolemy or related to him, you may want to disclose that on your user page per WP:COI. This will make it easier for you to edit. Viriditas (talk) 21:57, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Viriditas. I'll do it in the way you suggest, by practicing first. BTW, am not related to BP, but do know him. Met him several times and have been tracking TM for a while now. Is that a conflict of interest? Alexanderxerxes (talk) 18:20, 23 June 2011 (UTC)Alexander[reply]

As long as you have read and understood the COI page, I don't see a problem. If you can do some research and dig up sources we can use for his biography, I can be of more help to you. Viriditas (talk) 21:53, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. I'll find some sources. I have read and listened to a few interviews so I know they're out there. Thanks. Alexanderxerxes (talk) 04:32, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Contact me on my user talk page when you have them. Interviews are fine, but we will need more than that for a good biography. Take a moment to read some GA and FA-Class biographies to get a sense of what works and what doesn't. Viriditas (talk) 06:40, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Update: please add references below (full citations with links if you have them). Viriditas (talk) 10:36, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So, I've found a bunch of articles and interviews. I'm still in the process of adding them all. After I do that, how do I move this over to a "real" page? Alexanderxerxes (talk) 23:06, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You click "move" and change the name, but I've done that for you. I really suggest you focus and concentrate on merging the references inline such that every paragraph (or sentence) is supported by a WP:RS. If you don't do this, there is a chance that someone will eventually delete the article. I will also once again express my concern that you have not divulged your COI. Viriditas (talk) 10:13, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unsourced content

[edit]

Please remember, it is very important to use sources at all times, especially when describing something that a living person has said. I am specifically referring to this edit. Additionally, I am still concerned that you have not followed the guidelines in WP:COI. Viriditas (talk) 01:34, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Viriditas! I have added the interview where I saw ptolemy make that comment. I just have to learn how to cite it properly. Is there any chance you can help me that? With regards to the guidelines for WP:COI what do I do? Alexanderxerxes (talk) 22:56, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, as you may or may not aware, on the Transcendent Man article we've had to deal with a high profile public relations company using an anonymous IP address. Per the COI policy, it would have been much easier for this person to register an account, declare an interest, and work with Wikipedia editors to improve the subject. If I need to say more, I will, but hopefully you've gotten the hint? Viriditas (talk) 07:46, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am just one person (fan) who is keeping tabs of the project and would like to help get these ideas out to more people. For me (and people like me) this is a very important film. Thanks for your help. Alexanderxerxes (talk) 16:20, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your response. However, on Wikipedia, your account is commonly referred to as a SPA, and combined with the recent discovery of the anonymous IP account representing the PR compnay, the subsequent creation of your account and your edits appear to be much more than that of a fan, particularly in regards to this obscure, almost unheard of film. To be perfectly honest, your account name ("Alexander Xerxes") appears to pay homage to "Barry Ptolemy". You said you are a friend of his, but I should warn you, per the COI and SPA guidelines, others may not believe you. Viriditas (talk) 08:16, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I've been making contributions to the Transcendent Man page for at least a couple years, albeit small changes, (please look back at the history). I know nothing about any PR company. The film is at least the most talked about doc this year, having been in the national media's attention since early this year when it came out. I've watched clips of the film on CNN, FOX, MSNBC, Charlie Rose, Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher, Jimmy Kimmel, it was in the TIME magazine cover story on Ray Kurzweil who is the subject of the film and it was written up 3 times alone in the New York times, not to mention prominent articles in Fortune, Rolling Stone, The Economist, Fast Company and many many more. I learned about these just by reading up on it online. It's all there. As for the homage, Barry Ptolemy is considered a new powerful director in Hollywood and I thought it would be cool to create a new page on him since no one had. Alexanderxerxes (talk) 16:02, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The PR company is named as the distributor in the first sentence of the second paragraph of Transcendent Man. Please focus on adding inline sources to Barry Ptolemy. Viriditas (talk) 10:19, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. Will work to add some "inline" sources. Thanks! Alexanderxerxes (talk) 15:36, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Transcendent Man LIVE section

[edit]

You added a blatant, unabashed, unsourced advertisement to Transcendent Man in a section about "Transcendent Man LIVE". I have asked you to add independent sources for any and all material on this talk page. I am growing concerned that your account is only used to advertise and promote Barry Ptolemy and his work, and you have still not declared a COI as I requested. Viriditas (talk) 08:30, 30 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Waterland_Productions_page1.pdf)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Waterland_Productions_page1.pdf. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 03:05, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
