Formatting questions
[edit]- Dear Adakiko,
- you know that I am writing my first contribution in the englsh spoken Wikipedia. So, I am not at all familiar with the general rules of the english version and I need your help.
- Please verify my attempt at my page User:Alexander Peren concerning the subject (museum) "Erinnerungsort Badehaus" (Place of Remembrance Badehaus) towards the following question(s)
- concerning the typography within the text:
- Inside the text body, there are some names of institutions/associations, some German words and some titles of exhibitions, films and books (mostly in German, translated titel in parenthesis). And here is my problem about the typography:
- I am not happy to put all these very different "things" all in italic. I would like to distinguish in the typo if it is a institution, if it is a German word or if it is a title of a film/book/exhibition.
- My idea is: institutions/associations in italic, German words (socalled ...) in quotaion marks "..." and titles of films/exhibitions/books in 'apostroph'.
- What do you think about this? Might this viol against the Wikipedia rules? Or is this acceptable? I have looked for more than an hour to find some wikipedia instructions, and I was on
- https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/How_Wikipedia_Works/Printable_version
- https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Layout
- but frankly spoken, I did not find any answer to my questions above mentioned.
- If my proposal (italic, quotation marks, apostroph) is not acceptable in accordance to the rules for the english Wikipedia, what could you (or any other expert of the english Wikipedia) offer to me as a solution for my problem?
- Concerning the "Erinnerungsort Badehaus" itself, as it is the topic, I think that the translated "Place of Remembrance Badehaus" might appear without any typographic specification, or do you propose me to put this proper name perhaps in bold?
- I am looking forward to reading your answer towards these questions.
- Furthermore, I think, that my article is nearly ready to be moved from the Wikipedia's user part to the regular Wikipedia (article part), so I would kindly like to ask you if it might be possible for you to make a proofreading of the article and to make - if necessary - proposals for improvement(s) of the text or to make remarks if you believe that there are too less (or too mcuh) sources to allocate my text. As an additional information for you it might be helpful to know that this article is mainly the same as in the German Wikipedia ("Erinnerungsort Badehaus"), the article there was written as well originally by me as well.
- I really would be happy to read your answer.
- Thank you so much in advance for all your help. Have a nice week-end
- Best regards
- Alexander

- Hi Alexander,
- Normally new content should be added to the bottom of a talk page, so I moved it.
- I am not an expert in that area. You might find what you are looking for here: MOS:FOREIGNITALIC. That is part of the wp:Manual of Style's wp:Manual of Style/Text formatting page. That can be overwhelming sometimes. The wp:Simplified Manual of Style might not cover what you are interested in.
- I would recommend asking at the wp:Teahouse. You can "watch" the page for replies by clicking the star (that might get you numerous unwanted notifications). If you click "subscribe" to your section, you will only get notifications for edits/additions to your question.
- See help:talk pages and for more detail, wp:talk page guidelines. I hope this helps! Best wishes, Adakiko (talk) 20:38, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
- Dear Adakiko,
- Thank you so much for your reply and the useful links. However, I cannot find inside these links any recommendation/advice for typo of associations/institutions/clubs/unions/societies/charities. Have I to put them in italics or quotation marks or nothing at all but in "regular" typing? I got a hint in visiting the english wikipedia article of the German "Bundesliga": all clubs mentioned inside this article are written in "normal" letters. I think, for this moment, I will take over this usse for my contribution as well. What do you think about this? --Alexander Peren (talk) 17:24, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Alexander,
- I would recommend posting your question to the wp:Teahouse. Your question is beyond my limited knowledge of the matter! The Teahouse is generally a good place to ask. Your question will be read by a number of experienced editors and answered by someone knowledgeable rather than just a guess and links to spurious sources. I'm curious too; I'll have to see what suggestions you are given. Best wishes Adakiko (talk) 20:20, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
