Ukrainian Wedding

Korovai is a highly decorated bread that is served during Ukrainian weddings. It comes from a long practiced tradition and is a very important part of Ukrainian wedding Ceremonies. Korovai is not like the other cakes because it is blessed and is shared among the guests. Korovai is made of dough and is decorated with flowers, birds, branches, ect. Each decoration has a meaning; for example, birds represent the happy couple being wed. The birds with the folded wings represent the women and the birds with spread wings represent the men because the man is the protector and provider of the family. Unfortunately the decorations themselves are not consumable but the bread underneath can be cut and shared amongst the guests, family and the happy couple. The preparation of Korovai is a long and important process. It is believed that women who prepare Korovai will pass part of their fate to the happy couple, so only happy married women can participate in the making of Korovai. Also, women that are making the dough will need to wash their hands with holy water and be tied with a decorated towel. While baking, the women sing and tell fun stories to bring happiness and good fortune to the newly-weds. After the Korovai is finished, it is blessed with a holy cross and is prayed over to bless the people who will be eating the Korovai and to give them a good, long life. After Korovai is baked people inspect it for bad omens. For example, twisted bread is a sign of bad luck and cracked bread is a sign of divorce. Korovai is present through the entire wedding, so when the couple goes to church to get blessed, the Korovai is taken with and is put near the altar. After the ceremony the Korovai is moved to where the married couple will celebrate with friends and family. Once there, it is divided amongst the guests, and the bride and groom to improve the couple's chances of having a long, happy and prosperous marriage.

In Ukrainian tradition, the groom has to buy out the bride from her family. This Tradition shows that the bride is very important to her family because they do not want to give her away easily because she is their beautiful daughter. Everything begins with the groom and his best man arriving at the bride's house and try to buy out the bride from her family. A table is set up at the front of the brides house where the groom and brides family members will put a price on the bride. As the action begins the family members of the bride start to compliment her beauty, kindness, and work ethic so that the price will go up. On the other hand the grooms best man are trying to make the price lower and more favorable for the groom. Also the groom will talk about his love for the bride, how he is going to make the bride happy and why he will be a good husband. Bridesmaids also make up tests for the groom that will see how well the groom knows his bride and if he fails he will pay more for the bride. In the end the groom and the family of the bride agree on the price, but don't think that it's all about the money, the price can be anything from candy, champagne to some money but this tradition is just for fun and is not used to sell the bride for most money. In the end the bride come out of the house and bride and groom reunite and get blessing from family. The parents of the bride and groom bless the happy couple with Korovai and Icon.

Church service is very important in Ukrainian wedding because it can only happen if both of the sides are willing to get married and are ready to plead to the internal love, only then can their love be blessed by god. The Church ceremony consists of two parts Betrothal and Wedding. The couple receive a burning candle as a symbol of joy and warmth for their future. After that the priest puts on the ring on the groom and bride as a symbol of their marriage. As the ceremony moves to the Wedding part, the happy couple are being assisted by the bridesmaid and groom's man for Crowning ceremony which is a tradition that symbolizes bride and groom are becoming the king and queen of their life and are blessed by god. Then priest binds hand of the couple and asks them to fallow his around the altar three times as a symbol of their eternal marriage. To make sure the marriage is pure the bride and groom need to go to confection the day before the wedding and have their sins forgiven. This ceremony is very important because in Orthodox religion marriage is a sacred ceremony.

The most fallowed religion in Ukraine is Eastern Orthodox and when it comes to funerals it has a strict rules. Th mourning period is very important and because it it believed that the soul of the person wonders the earth for 40 days and so there are ceremonies that pay respect to the dead. It it believed that on the 3rd day the soul leaves the body, on the 9th day spirit leaves the body and on the 40th day body starts to die as well. One of the most important and interesting parts of Ukrainian funeral is the preparation of the body which includes washing the body to get rid of worldly sins but this is mostly performed by the family and friend because in Ukrainian traditions the family has to take care of the loved one's to the end. The next step is dressing the dead in clean, all white close as a symbol of purity. Then the body is placed in the casket in the family home and is let to rest for a few days. Next comes the wake which is done the night before the actual funeral and lest's the whole night.
