Page Protection
You recently added a semi-protected tag to Khoo Kheng-Hor. However, this page is not protected. You may have been trying to protect the page, which is something only administrators can do. Adding the tag does not protect the page, in order to do so, administrators click a "protect" tab at the top of the page, which loads this page. That is where pages are protected, the tag does nothing. Thanks, Prodego talk 15:08, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- Please stop adding fake protection notices. Prodego talk 17:46, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Prodego, i'm a newbie here & so not fully aware how such wiki tags work. Just want to protect the said article as it was written on a living person. When i put such tags earlier, it seem to work during my experimentations earlier. So i ve to request for its protection to the Administrator(s)? How to go about it? Kindly enlighten. Aldwinteo 18:26, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
Well there doesn't seem to be any vandalism on that page, so there is no need to protect it. We only protect pages if rhey are being heavily vandalized (see the protection policy), and in this case it doesn't seem necessary. Someone else may wish to edit that article, and they would not be able to if it were protected. The reason it may have seemed to have had an effect was that people, seeing the tag, didn't edit the page, since they thought it was protected. You can request pages be protected at this page, but Khoo Kheng-Hor does not warrant it. And Welcome to Wikipedia! Let me know if you have any questions here. Prodego talk 20:52, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hi again, thks for yr advice earlier. For a newbie like me, where shld i go to learn the necessary tags & protocols fast. i pick it up here & there by using 'Help', 'Search' & even went to the forum/discussion(like this) for further assistance. Rather confusing & tedious at times Aldwinteo 02:15, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, Wikipedia is a maze when you are new. The Help pages are vastly better then they were when I started editing, and Wikipedia:Department directory is nice. But really you need someone to ask a lot, and so if you do, feel free to let me know on my talk page. Prodego talk 02:32, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Wiki senior, in another biography which i wrote recently, the header & title page was accidently mistyped as 'Piya tan' instead of 'Piya Tan'(Capital 'T'). c page at http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Piya_tan How shld one correct this typo? Kindly assist, thks!
See Wikipedia:Merging and moving pages. I've fixed it already. -- Netsnipe ► 03:50, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

- Hi Howcheng, i am honoured & happy to hear that my recent article got nominated for DYK but upon checking at http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Main_Page, i cldn't see any mentioned of it yet. In fact, while checking my article history log later, i discovered that my mentioned article was not only much visited & edited afterwards but was even vandalised twice anonymously by 121.6.121.182 & 75.5.10.233 (Prhchi?). Fortunately, it was reverted by some kind souls later. i felt sad as this is my first encounter of such incidents to date. Yes, I do like to mention about another recent article i wrote as per http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Fort_Tanjong_Katong. It's about a forgotten British fort that was discovered in Singapore in recent years but was reburied again & its fate till now is uncertain. Thks for informing me earlier & warmest rgds Aldwinteo 14:37, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Pictures transferred to Wikimedia Commons
Hello, you do have a nice set of pictures. As uploading pictures to Wikipedia is not advisable (if it's your own), you may like to consider uploading to Wikimedia Commons, a shared media repository and a sister project of Wikipedia. From here, your pictures can be used not only on enwiki, commons, but all wikis run by the Wikimedia Foundation (all Wikipedias etc.). You may like to upload higher resolution images, and this is much preferred by many users here (image contributors and other users). Thanks. Terence 07:30, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
- I'll take note & evaluate your suggestion, Thanks. Aldwinteo 08:18, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
Unspecified source for Image:1915_Singapore_Mutiny.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:1915_Singapore_Mutiny.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 17:04, 19 June 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. howcheng {chat} 17:04, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Old National Library Building
Hi Aldwinteo. You are off to such a great start on the article Old National Library Building that it may qualify to appear on Wikipedia's Main Page under the Did you know... section. Appearing on the Main Page would help bring publicity to the article. However, there is a five day from article creation window for Did you know... nominations. Licensing images
Howdy! I noticed that you've claimed licensing rights for Image:Old National Library-Singapore.jpg and Image:Old National Library-The Courtyard.jpg. While I don't doubt that you snapped the photographs of the postcards, the uploaded images are unfortunately derivative works — the library's photographer still holds the rights to the images on the postcard.
This means that the images can only be used under Fair Use guidelines. I thought I'd try to avoid seeing the images end up on WP:PUI by giving you a heads-up. Basically, all you have to do is swap out the current templates for {{Fairusein|Old National Library Building}}, and add a quick rationale along the lines of: "This image is used for non-commercial, educational purposes. No free alternative can be made as the building was torn down. The image won't affect the value of the copyright as it's of fairly low resolution compared to the original". That should keep all but the worst of the copyright-paranoia harpies from trying to get the images taken off. GeeJo (t)⁄(c) • 09:23, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
- Hi GeeJo, tks for the heads-up, much appreciated. Will amend the licensing tag accordingly. -- Aldwinteo 15:08, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

- Thanks again for the compliments. Right from the start, it's been my plan all along to help SGpedia in raising the profile & quality of SG-related articles esp those historical/heritage articles which were lacking previously. From young, I possess a strong passion for History & Geography (I aced both subjects in school) & writing for Wikipedia allows me the opportunity to pursue this passion during my limited free time. As for my opinion in writing DYK or GA-quality articles, listed below are some of my personal suggestions:
- Planning: I plan & set a time frame for my writings
- Identify your scope of writing: I came up with a list of articles to write on based on personal interest on the subject matter & suggestions recvd earlier.
- Know your subject well: Content, comprehensive research, interviews (to get more insight) & site-visits.
- Understand Wikipedia rules & guidelines well such as notability, citations, MOS, NPOV...
- Observe & follow good examples (I'm more of a doer than a talker type)
- PASSION & COMMITMENT: Without which, all the above will come to naught now or later.
Do check out my past writings to get a clearer picture of what I mean here. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 14:16, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the tips, Aldwinteo! How do you ensure your GAs are well-written? Although I consistently top my class (and even topped the level on one occasion) in English, I still struggle in that aspect. --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 15:03, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
Read more good GA/FA articles or books on your subject (I'm a bibliophile), learn & adopt best practices thru' such reviews & practise more! (u cld put up a request for suggestions/peer reviews at SGpedia Notice Board b4 u put up your article for GA nomination next time) No quick & easy shortcuts I cld give here, just practical advice based on my personal experience. Once u got the 'nose' & 'flow' for writing potential DYK/GAs, it'll be easier down the road. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 22:08, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
- Who copy-edits the GAs you write? --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 14:10, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
Most of the time, I improved them along the way (as I'm a free-lance feature writer myself) or at times by a bunch of senior Wikipedia editors (mostly from UK/Oz) who are following my works all these while. On rare occasions, some touching-up by the reviewers themselves or I do the nec copyedits after receiving their suggestions/comments during the GA reviews. In short, It's basically a 'one-man show' from research, site-visits, pix-taking, article creation, DYK/GA nominations & copyedits. Since I've completed all my 41 writeups during this self-assigned 7-month project for Wikipedia, I decided to stop & go into semi-retirement since Nov 5. In the meantime, I'll promote & nominate a few more for GA status before I retire from Wikipedia for good. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 15:11, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
- Why do you wish to "retire from Wikipedia for good"? Are you busy in real life or frustrated by various problems with Wikipedia? Could you help me copy-edit articles I write before I nominate them for GA and/or introduce several "senior Wikipedia editors" to me? Lastly, am I asking too many questions? --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 13:26, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
I'm rather surprised by your interest & concern about me & my works in Wikipedia as I've always maintain a low profile; I rarely post comments or intervene unless when necessary. Being a free-lance feature writer myself during my limited free time in real life, I no longer want to spend too much time & energy in writing or copyediting for Wikipedia on a on-going basis. Besides personal commitments, I've accomplished what I've set out to do for SGpedia/Wikipedia earlier. Besides SG, most of my past articles I wrote provide a deeper insight on little known or near forgotten history/heritage of various countries. As such, it caught the attention of many 'ang-moh' native speakers coming mainly from the DYK groups, WikiProject groups such as Military History, History, Australia (the friendly Aussies do like to support their own folks as I am a Aussie grad from NSW. See the greetings below), UK, Buddhism etc. u can check out the article's GA reviews or its history logs to find out specifically who they are. Anyway, being a 'one-man show' all these while, I wld not be badly missed now or later. Yes, u do ask a lot of questions since Dec 21 -- Aldwinteo (talk) 14:53, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
- Please do not feel that because you are a "one-man show", you will not be missed. Having written five GAs, you are already an SGpedian legend. We need more GA writers like you. Although I hope you will continue editing Wikipedia when you have the time, I understand that real life comes first. If you decide to retire for good, may I take this opportunity to wish you all the best in your endeavours and remind you that your contributions will always be appreciated, not just by SGpedians, but also by the millions who read Wikipedia. --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 16:25, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
u posted flattering accolades abt my contributions at SGpedia earlier (which I wasn't aware of until recently) & now u or someone is calling me a "SGpedian legend"? Shucks! Dun worry young fella, I'll still be around as I'm currently involved in the GA exercise & afterwards, may hang around long enuf if possible except that I'll not be actively writing any more DYK/GA-quality articles cos it has been a rather taxing experience for me; my social life & health (namely eyesight & prolonged fatigue) suffers due to the amount of time & hassle I spend on research, correspondence, site-visits, interviews, permission sought, proof-reading etc (No thanks to the type of articles I'm focusing on earlier). u can refer to the 'Acknowlegements' section to get an idea of wat I meant here. While I'm back in S'pore, I planned this solo Wiki project to last between 6-7 mths for me. Besides myself, I believe there're some good SGpedian writers left & still many more yet to be discovered. Nevertheless, if u do appreciate what I've done so far for SGpedia/Wikipedia, honour me by protecting my works & promote some to FA status (e.g. Battle of Kranji) in the near future in order to carry on my 'legacy' once I officially retired for good. Once again, I thank u for yr compliments, support & recognition shown for my contributions to SGpedia & Wikipedia. With this reply, I wld like to end our discussion here. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 18:13, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- Alright, I will honour your request to end this conversation. --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 13:06, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
COI in assessing GA?
Hi, you mentioned there is a 'cleanup' group focusing on possible COI in assessing GA articles. Would this 'cleanup' group also focus on Americans reviewing American war articles? Where can I look for details on this? Are you talking about the GA sweeps group? Personally I believe Selarang Barracks Incident would be a GA-class when the issues are addressed. Thank you. Jappalang (talk) 23:00, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
- No, I'm not referring to any COI-based sweep groups but what I was referring to earlier is the GA/FA sweep groups (or its overzealous adherents/whistleblowers) currently doing the rounds in re-evaluating past GA/FAs "in order to raise and uphold the quality of Good articles" now. Though the re-evaluation process (or heated debates at times) is transparent to all parties concerned, I noticed that the 'standards' seem to shift & not applied uniformly across the board. A few recent 'casualties' that I've seen are Singapore, Lithuania, Argentina, Morocco, Papua New Guinea & et cetera... In some of the cases, the COI issue was inplicitly implied or as seen from its follow-up actions. For more details, kindly refer to this page & its archives. As such, my earlier concern was expressed as a cautionary note & I do appreciate your kind understanding shown in supporting fellow SGpedians & their works.
- PS: Fyi, the version I adopted for the article is the version that was mentioned at the Changi Museum during my previous site-visits & research. I'll add the nec endnotes soon as based on your earlier feedback. Rgds -- Aldwinteo (talk) 00:58, 25 December 2007 (UTC)
