The Specials

Hi, I noticed the "citation needed" tag you placed on this article, regarding the "debt" some of the songs owed to the originals. The cover versions on the album were definitely all credited to the original writers right from the first pressing in 1979 – the sentence in the article was added in 2006 by this anonymous IP [1] and I think he/she is not referring to the fact that the writers weren't credited (which they were), but that he/she feels that the Specials should have said on the album who did the original versions and how much they were influenced by the originals... of course the band had no obligation to do this, and it sounds like a personal opinion and original research to me, and I think the phrase should be removed from the article. Hi, I hadn't read it that way but you're right, that they were talking about debt, and probably not about 'credit'. That may *not* be original research if the issue is raised in the various books about the Specials/2-Tone/British reggae? But not sure whether the statement should be removed or wait for citation. I've had a quick look through the couple of biographies of the Specials that I have, and they don't say anything about being indebted to the original 1960s ska artists. There's some words from the band members about why they chose certain songs to cover, particularly "A Message to You Rudy". But I think this belongs in a section about the songs and composition of the album, rather than in the lead section. The fact the same edit by the IP changed the description of the band to dismiss them as a "ska revival band", when anybody with a passing familiarity with the Specials knows that their music and their philosophy was substantially greater than just being a covers or tribute band, suggests that the editor in question may have had a bit of a grudge against what he saw as the Specials stealing the thunder of the original artists. Yes that seems reasonable. It's slightly strange for critics to be offended on behalf of the original artists, who are usually grateful for another chance to tour, renewed interest and maybe even royalties, but a ska purist could easily resent 2-Tone.
