Hello, you have tagged the page AFD and this is 100% nonsense, me as a contributor to the site of what you say is copyrighted, that I have full rights of the information and photos, I put on the wikipedia page. There is no need for your AFD.

Hi. Please note that I did not list that article to be deleted. It was added here, but another user deleted the notification here, which is against policy. So I readded it here. The reason it was nominated to be deleted is not because of the copyright issues, but rather because it might not be notable enough to have a Wikipedia article. If you feel the article should be kept, please state so on the AFD page.
With regards to the copyright, unfortunately, we can't take your word when you state that you own the copyrights. The forum pages currently say "Copyright ©2000 - 2006, phpPortals. All Rights Reserved", since there is no mention of the text and images being released either under the GFDL or equivalent license, or for use on Wikipedia, we have to assume that we cannot use it.

I wouldn't say it's the most exciting town around, especially in comparison to Sydney and Melbourne. Only a population of somewhere near 350 000 (compared to the 4.2 million in Sydney). It doesn't have many tall buildings at all. Did you have a look at the Canberra article? - Akamad Happy new year! 05:28, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You certainly can. Check out WP:CVU, though there is nothing really fancy or special about it. They do, however, provide some great tools for vandal fighting, including my favourite CryptoDerk's Vandal Fighter. Out of curiosity, how were you spotting vandalism before? - Akamad Happy new year! 11:29, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Right now i'm equipt with CryptoDerks VF which I found on an admins userpage and the godmode lite script for the rollback button. I don't know how people survive with just refreshing RC. VF is the way to go. - iGod 11:31, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Dear Akamad; Thank you for the gracious note. My main question has to do with how to reference ("Cite") sources. I don't see many examples in other text that make sense to me.

I to was curious about your name. I spent three summers and six months in 2001-2002 doing phd fieldwork in thailand, and i would have sworn your last name looked thai. of course, sri lankan buddhist missionaries were responsible for buddhism's introduction into thailand, and other important aspects of their culture as well--the pali script they write with eg. please do give me some general pointers on how to include references in text.

thanks much, barbara davidson the preceding unsigned comment is by 216.137.65.32 (talk • contribs) 02:22, January 4, 2006 (UC)

There are many ways to cite sources. This url provides all the information you will need on how to do it: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Cite_sources
In general, if you are referencing a website, it's easiest to simply put the url of the source in brackets:
eg: Bob Dylan was born on the 24th of May, 1941. [http://www.who2.com/bobdylan.html]
Which produces text that looks like this:
Bob Dylan was born on the 24th of May, 1941. [1]
I think one of the best uses of references that I have seen on Wikipedia is the Columbine massacre article: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Columbine_High_School_massacre
Throughout the text, they provide footnote references (see: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Footnote).
In general, people aren't too picky about the style of referencing, so long as the source is given.
Hope this helps, once again, please feel free to ask any questions you may have (you know where to find me).
And by the way, I am of Sri Lankan origin (Buddhist), but currently reside in Australia.

Introduction for Atmospheric Reentry

[edit]

Dear Akamad;

You're right, "atmospheric reentry" article needs an introduction. Now I have to figure out a nice snappy intro that doesn't use any jargon.

Also, another person mentioned that I've been making too many edits and the history data base has gotten rather large. Could you or someone else purge the atmospheric reentry history of old edits? One week of history is good enough. Thanks!

Egg plant 03:15, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, it is not possible for normal users to delete entries in the article history. In fact only the systems developers (see: m:Developer) at the Wikimedia Foundation can remove specific edits from the history, and this is only done in extreme cases. - Akamad 03:23, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
On a side note: I only recall one such incident (though I'm sure there has been more) when specific edits have been deleted form the history, and that was during the John Seigenthaler Sr. Wikipedia biography controversy. - Akamad 03:28, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Akamad

Hello Akamad. Thank you for the welcome and the instructions on how to begin to navigate. I have been using Wikipedia for some time now and decided it was time I made some contributions to it. Thanks. By the way, I made three attempts to log on to the site this time, and each time I got this HUGE, FULL-SCREEN message that Wikipedia was experiencing techincal problems. I thought: here I am a 'newbie' and already I've screwed up the whole site. My history contains the disorder of being 'techincally challenged' (especially where computers are concerned). However, with the patience of others, I will perservere. Michael David 23:32, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, Wikipedia suffers from a lot of technical difficulties at times, due to the heavy traffic it gets these days. Patience is the key. - Akamad 23:44, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

About the Time

[edit]

HU? ]?gain. I don't mean to appoint you my Wiki technical advisor, but there are some things about the site for which I can't seem to find answers.

Like this: My Watchlist contains the time entered. It appears in 'military time'. I just made an edit to an article and the time appeared as 00:00 January 5! THAT'S TOMORROW in my reality zone. Help me to understand this. Michael David 00:13, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, don't worry about asking too many questions...I am more than happy to help. To answer your question, the times are given with respect to the UTC (formerly GMT), which is the time in the London timezone. I imagine you live somewhere in the US, thus your time will be behind the UTC. You can change the way the times are displayed in the watchlist by going to your preferences at the top right of the page, and going to "Date and time". - Akamad 00:48, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Started new page!

[edit]

Hi,

I just started my first new page. It's an entry for Robert Sanderson McCormick. How about going to that entry and telling me how I did. I would appreciate your input. Thanks. the preceding unsigned comment is by Michael David (talk • contribs) 15:19, January 8, 2006 (UTC)
That's some great work on the article! The only this missing now are categories. You will notice on the William Sanderson McCormick article for example, the categories at the bottom of the page, such as "People from Virginia" and "1815 births". You can add the appropriate categories by browsing through Wikipedia:Browse. More info is given here. But other than that, nice work, keep it up! I guess if you have the time, you can write about his son too. - Akamad 19:34, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

[edit]

Hi,

I added the Categories I thought were appropriate. I tried to include a Category "United States Ambassadors" but I was told, upon saving the page, that there was on such Category. What are your thoughts? Michael David 22:06, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The one you were looking for was Category:Ambassadors of the United States. I added it to the article. - Akamad 01:38, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

[edit]

Hi,

I am going to complete the McCormick clan entries. In doing the research I have found they were quite a diverse group. Each of the entries will require several Category references. For example, one (Joseph Medill McCormick) was a member of the US Congress and eventually committed suicide (sounds like he needed a good therapist!).
My question is this: where do I go to find a list of existing Categories such as the one you entered for me? Michael David 20:09, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There are two methods to finding the categories:
  1. Go to Wikipedia:Browse and browse your way through to find the appropriate category.
  2. Google. eg: googling united states senators wikipedia category will get you Category:United States Senators as your first result.
The categories are in the form of a tree heirarchy, but each category can have more than one parent category. For example Category:United States Senators has Category:Members of the United States Congress, Category:United States Senate and Category:Categories by state of the United States as parents. The parent categories are listed at the bottom of the page.

[edit]

Hi again,

Please tell me how I can place a "Click Here If You Want to Leave a Message for Me" (or something similiar) on my User & Talk Pages. Michael David 01:53, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The code I use for my message is this:
<div id="talk" style="border: 1px solid #CC9; margin: 0em 1em 0em 1em; text-align: center; padding:5px; clear: both; background-color: #C8CDE0"> ''Welcome to my talk page! Please sign and date your entries by inserting '''--~~~~''' at the end of your post.''<br> ''Do note that I will be replying to your messages on your user talk page as well as this page. Thank you! :-)''<br> '''[http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Akamad&action=edit&section=new Start a new talk topic.]''' </div>
(Remember to change the URL so it has your username instead of mine)
If you ever come across something on a page and you want to know how it was done. The quickest way would be to click "edit this page" and have a look at the code. - Akamad 02:03, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tildes

[edit]

Hi,

Thanks for the codes. The problem I'm having in inserting it is this: when I type the sentence, "Please sign and date your entries by typing four tildes at the end of your post." in the final product the tildes read as my user code and read-out that way. How do I type the four tildes to read as merely text? Michael David 14:14, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A painless thought

[edit]

It's me again,

I hope you don't bill for your hours!

I just had a thought (and it didn't hurt a bit).

What I would really like to do when someone wants to leave me a message is to have them click on the Cuneiform 'Freedom' graphic. With a simple welcome message & directions where to click. Michael David 14:50, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies, this should work:
<div id="talk" style="border: 1px solid #CC9; margin: 0em 1em 0em 1em; text-align: center; padding:5px; clear: both; background-color: #C8CDE0"> ''Welcome to my talk page! Please sign and date your entries by inserting '''<nowiki>"- ~~~~"</nowiki>''' at the end of your post.''<br> ''Do note that I will be replying to your messages on your user talk page as well as this page. Thank you! :-)''<br> '''[http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=User talk:Michael David&action=edit&section=new Start a new talk topic.]''' </div>
The difference is the use of the "nowiki" tags, like so: <nowiki>"- ~~~~"</nowiki>, this will produce text that looks like this: "- ~~~~"
About your question on using the freedom image as a link. This can be done, but is definately not recommended. It can be done by redirecting the image page to your talk page. But like I said, it is strongly discouraged. This question was asked a couple of times on the help desk (here and here). Once again, don't worry about asking too many questions, like it says on the top of my talk page, I am more than happy to help users out :-) Akamad 19:40, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with code

[edit]

Hi,

I entered the code you sent and it seems to have some problems.

It shows more text before 'Start New Topic' than I want. & when you click on it it takes you to the definiton of 'User'

How about going to my User Page & see your yourself.

Thanks for all of your time here, I really appreciate it. Michael David 00:54, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think I have fixed it now, the problem was that there was spaces in the URL I wrote instead of underscores (ie: it said "user talk:Michael David" instead of "user_talk:Michael_David"). - Akamad 01:04, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

-Jonasmellin 12:21, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. The article needs to be wikified. Which means that keywords on the page should have links to their respective articles. See for example, the article on Claudius, notice the links given throughout the page. Every article should have links like that so the reader can go to them to get more information. So only words that are relevant to the article should be linked. - Akamad 19:37, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
