I need some copyright help on Image:Native_mideast.jpg on Middle East page. It is a great image that shows the names of middle eastern countries in their native scripts. Thank you.

Well I've taken a look at the website you got it from and it has the following copyright message

"© 2001-2006 Werner Fröhlich. Data from this site may be queried and copied on a not-for-profit basis only if the source is accurately credited. All rights are reserved for profit-seeking purposes. This site is designed for purposes of sharing information freely and intended to be a resource for academics and other private users. Without the advance express written permission of geonames.de, you may not send, or cause to be sent, any automated queries of any sort to the geonames.de site, or use the site in any commercial manner."

Which in short means we can't use it. We need images released under a free license, reusable by commercial (for profit) organisations as well. Suitable licenses would be GFDL or some variants of the creative commons license. You can find more information about copyrights here. You could also email the website concerned and ask for explicit permission to use it under one of the usable licenses, details including a suitable boilerplate can be found here, but again note a license for wikipedia only to use the image is no good, if has to be a free license such that others (including commercial users) can reuse and/or modify the image. --pgk(talk) 18:08, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Native mideast.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Native mideast.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Peter O. (Talk) 00:21, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
