Hey,

According to my knowledge and the web site of the Bazilika [2] it is spelled Szent István Bazilika.

piros vs. vörös

[edit]

Hi,

Sorry if my edit has caused you some bad moments. Here's what I think about each point:

  • Mentioning the color chart is important because that's the criterium that the referred source (Berlin, B and Kay, P (1969) Basic Color Terms) uses. If two color names cannot clearly refer to two different hues on a color scale, their dual nature is not accepted. There was a discussion about it because someone stated that Portuguese also uses two words for red, but they failed this criterion just because they cannot be distinguished on a color chart.
    • It wasn't clear for me that the sentence in question had to do with the citation. I'll reinsert that note.
  • "piros is used for vivid red and vörös for dark red" – this is true and it was a shame to change it to the present version. This is the essence of their primary difference.
    • Well, what I think may be more OR than encyclopedic information, but for me, vörös means vivid red, and I'd be surprised to learn that the word that is related to blood and is usually used for emotionally more charged subjects is at the same time the one which refers to the less vivid hue.
  • "Children are first taught this word for "red"." - it's also important because it shows that "piros" is found in a more elementary layer of language, it reveals a lot about the concept of "red" of native speakers of Hungarian.
    • Never removed this one.
  • You changed: "the use of either of the two words may be equally adequate". False. When they are in contradiction, it's not true that they can be equally adequate, because collocations usually prevail even if another kind of logic could be applied (it can be seen at many natural objects that "piros" could be applied better but "vörös" is used, mostly because of their fixed collocations).
    • "May be equally adequate" means "there exist cases in which they are equally adequate". This is correct. The current formulation is not suggesting that in case of a contradiction, the two are always equally adequate. But I'll clarify that point.
  • You deleted "rose-cheeked looks" although "piros arc" clearly means health and cheer but "vörös arc" usually means alcohol or heart problems.
    • Correct, but I didn't see the point in telling that to the English-speaking reader. I'd actually prefer no more than 3-5 clear-cut typical examples for the two words, and preferably ones that contain the word "red" when translated to English.
  • I won't mention other examples in detail but I don't see why you mind them being there.
    • See above.
  • You deleted: "Some things, including inks, lights, roses, ribbons, and tapes, can be described by either colour name." It's also important because most things (about 80-90%) can only be used with only one of the two color names and this is an exception which again reveals something important of Hungarians' cognitive schemes.
    • I deleted this because it was a verbatim duplicate of the sentence with "may be equally adequate".

In all, I was just acting per WP:BOLD - feel free to edit me mercilessly yourself. :)

Szerintem a Független Vajdasággal megváltoznának a Trianoni határok is, mivel a szerződés Szerbia határai is vonatkozik. Egyébként azt sem tudom miből gondolja, hogy ez szerintem is a helyes megoldás. Abból, hogy egy létező politikai kérdésről írok egy objektív szócikket? Railway stations

[edit]

Hi,

I'd like to hear your opinion on these: Category:Railway stations in Hungary. I tried to persuade the one who moved them to use English (or at least correct Hungarian) where it's possible. see User_talk:Doco and my talk page. – Alensha talk 15:06, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Piccadilly Körönd may sound strange, but what about Ötödik sugárút? Or Barackfa utca (if you've ever read Gone with the Wind) :) Keleti Railway Station is widely used in English (and if I remember well, IC trains use this version too, when greeting the passengers in English, but I may be wrong here...)
  2. Also, this is one translation that cannot be really debated, the only two English expressions for pályaudvar are "train station" and "railway station" and WP seems to use the latter (see categories).
  3. Actual names are always mentioned, only they are not the titles of the articles. (example: The Hungarian Parliament Building (Hungarian: Országház))
  4. Following this trail of thoughts, if someone is interested in a country, they can learn all of its language. Then we needn't write here anything; if someone is interested in Hungary, they'll learn Hungarian and read HuWiki :)
  5. "pályaudvar" is a common enough word, and definitely an important one.

We could begin the article this way: Keleti Railway Station (Hungarian: Keleti pályaudvar; literal translation: Eastern Railway Station)...

támogass már légyszi... nem akarom átmozgatni a miskolciakat is, mert akkor a konzisztencia kedvéért muszáj lenne, de olyan hülyén néznének ki... ezek is hülyén néznek ki magyar címmel egy angol enciklopédiában :(

Hello

[edit]

I left a response on the Hungarian gy talk page in which I don't challenge anything you say, you'll be pleased to know. The reason I am writing to you is to ask you something totally different as you are a Hungarian speaker. You know this French president elect - Sarkozy, I know in Hungarian it is written Sarközy, and I know how it is pronounced before the last two letters. I didn't think ZY was a combination in Hungarian and I certainly never knew "y" to stand alone, I thought it just follows certain letters to soften them. Does it soften the otherwise hard Z? (Like Polish ź), and why does no pronunciation guide mention this? And would the same rule apply to your former statesman Medgyjessy ? I'd appreciate it if you could tell me, thanks. Evlekis 13:54, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much Adam, you've answered my question very well. There is a strange reason I ask this: living in the UK, one thing on TV irritates me to the point that I wish to smash the television for being unable to throttle the person who has frustrated me: Francophiles and French patriots who are good at English, whenever these people speak on British television, they'll speak good English either for being British, or France (but have acquired good English pronunciation), and when they mention anything associated with France, they switch to its French pronunciation which you know is out of harmony with English and vice versa. The French will do it because of their patriotism and the English will do it just to show their talent off to the listeners. It leaves the rest of the population unable to speak French to give the word its Anglicised variation; so some newscasters say it as in English, and some like in French. A billion times these past 48 hours I've heard "Saahhrr-koz eeee" pronounced in the throat by British as well as English-speaking-French commentators. Don't expect different from the French, but if the English are following a policy where-by they want to give a word the local pronunciation (which writers and pedants oppose), then should they not attempt the Hungarian? After all, the whole shape of the name Sárközy is based on Hungarian, the French don't use umlauts and they favour /c/ over /k/. One speaks English, refers to something based on Hungarian, so French pronunciation is every bit redundant; so to anyone who knows better - given that the language's biggest influential heavyweights oppose it - they actually look more stupid than clever. Anyhow, that's that. Tell me one more thing briefly, in Hungarian do you still pronounce the final 'y' as an 'i' or can you ignore it as in Sárköz? And if the preceding letter does happen to be l, g, n or t, is it simply something which one has to learn, or do they automaticly assimilate? Thanks. Evlekis 18:42, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ahh you one does need to learn it. as for the French president, I can go ahead and prove myself one step cleverer than the self-opiniated windbags, who like to give French pronunciations, by pronouncing it "Shar - kö - zi". Thanks for all your explanations and the link is interesting too, just what I needed. I'm very grateful, so if I can help you in any way with anything else, just ask. Regards. Evlekis 19:59, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah! if I pronounce it one way and it turns out to be the wrong one, it is till one step closer to the actual way than the morons who are clueless; speaking of which Adam, we're talking about the British and the French, the two most self-centred nations in the universe! I could tell everyone I meet who knows Sarkozy that his name means "ashtray" in Tibetan and they'll never consider disproving it, and you can even tell them that its actual pronunciation is "Saddam" and they'll believe that too. Remember, they who give it the French pronunciation clearly havn't done their homework, so they are the most likely to fall sucker to any nonsense! :))) Evlekis 20:29, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Subjunctive or Imperative Mood?

[edit]

Hi Adam78, I've noticed that the Hungarian imperative mood (felszólító) is called "subjunctive" (kötőmód) in the Hungarian verbs article. Is this correct? To my knowledge, there is no real subjunctive mood in Hungarian. Thanks in advance. --76.226.113.213 (talk) 18:28, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know where I should answer you, as you haven't logged in and you don't have a talk page.

Anyway, morphologically speaking, there is only one mood which can be named either way, but syntactically speaking, there is some difference:

  • Azt akarták, hogy elmenjen. – They wanted him to leave ("that he should leave"). [the verbal prefix stays before the verb]
  • Azt mondták: menjen el! – They said, "Go away!" [the verbal prefix follows the verb]

The first sentence is typically subjunctive, rather than imperative. Adam78 (talk) 22:03, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the clarification. I am not an editor in the English Wikipedia, that's why I don't have a talk page. But I do use the Hungarian grammar articles for reference in the English Wiktionary. They are extremely helpful. I am not a linguist and most books use "conjunctive-imperative" instead of subjunctive. That's why I asked you. Thank you for responding. --76.226.113.213 (talk) 03:08, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As long as we speak about morphology, "conjunctive-imperative" is perfect – maybe the grammar articles you mentioned should also use this term instead of "subjunctive". (I may be wrong but I can only see a difference in terminology between subjunctive and conjunctive, so I don't know why some authors prefer this or that over the other.) Adam78 (talk) 20:25, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure either what the difference is between those two words. Someone is helping me to create Hungarian inflection and conjugation templates in the English Wiktionary. I am supposed to provide the content, while he is providing the template. If you ever feel like participating in this effort, please let me know. transylvania

[edit]

well to decide on the issue arising out of the article on the place of transylvania throughout history, i think the easiest way would be to refer to the local population and the change of the above between 896 and 1920. at the same time you have to take into account the motivs behind the change of this population and its ethnicity. The fact that a Rumanian kingdom was egsisting on the outside of the karpatian mountains should have no influence on the issue. at the same time there were numerous refugee influxes in hungary throughout history, because the expansion of the turk empire... after the first worldwar every single one of these refugee groups wanted to establish an independent country based on the fact that they didn't mix with the local population and lost their original one to the turks earlier, and new countries were formed on those lands after the fall of the turk empire..... the only nationality that had a country was actually the rumanian, and only in small percentage in transylvania, but they wished to join back to romania, and the romanian government wanted to establish an expansion to the west as one of the winning powers. none the less the resources of transylvania were part of the base of power for the austro-hungarian monarchy, and as that had to be taken off of it, to make sure that there is gonna be no second war against the loosing powers of the first one. so romania's request for the territory of transylvania killed two birds with one stone.... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.71.183.206 (talk) 14:54, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. A discussion is taking place as to whether the article List of words that comprise a single sound is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of words that comprise a single sound until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 23:04, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hungarian help needed

[edit]

Hello Adam78, I'm contacting you because we need some Hungarian translators to help with the deployment of the new VisualEditor on hu.wikipedia. There are help pages, user guides, and description pages that need translating, as well as the interface itself. The translating work is going on over on MediaWiki: Translation Central. I also need help with a personal message for the Hungarian Wikipedians. If you are able to help in any way, either reply here, or head over to TranslationCentral. Thanks for your time, PEarley (WMF) (talk) 01:12, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Adam, in the above page there is an English word frusteredly that according to a native English speaker is not an English word. See his comments here: [5]. I'm not sure how to correct it. Can you please help? Thanks. --Panda10 (talk) 14:36, 29 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Szia Ádám! Szeretnék egy térképet Budapestről, ahol Buda fel lenne osztva 4 részre:

  • együtt az II. és a XII. kerületek,
  • a XI. és a XXII. kerületek,
  • külön az I. kerület
  • külön a III. kerület.

Esetleg segítenél, hogy kell csinálni?

Válaszod előre is köszönöm. - - Globetrotter19 (talk) 11:19, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on George Campbell (linguist) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A12644-2004Dec19.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Thank you for your work on Hungarian

[edit]

Hi!

I'm a fellow Wikipedian interested in languages and linguistics. I just wanted to come by and say thank you for your work. I came across your article on Hungarian grammar some years ago, right now I'm going through it again, as I got interested in learning some Hungarian recently, and I have to say, it's really great: it's both exhaustive and insightful (the part on "suffix typology" is going right into my notes). It's a real joy to find such valuable information on Wikipedia. Gnothidichselbst (talk) 21:44, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Gnothidichselbst: Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm very glad you found it helpful. I also owe thanks to several fellow editors of mine. I think the arrangement of the information could be improved in several sections, though, as things might seem (even) more complicated than they already are.

For the language learners' point of view, I might suggest the books Magyar nyelvtan. Formák, funkciók, összefüggések by Rita Hegedűs, Gyakorló magyar nyelvtan by Szilvia Szita and Tamás Görbe, and A Practical Hungarian Grammar by László Keresztes. Many of their aspects and insights could and should be incorporated in this article (along with the ones on Hungarian noun phrases and Hungarian verbs). Good luck for your studies! Notice

The article Essive-formal case has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

One reference citing one theorist makes this original research. Formal case has also been proposed for deletion.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist.
