Kona Lanes

And thank you for all your hard work on this great article. Googie was the best. Cheers! Magnolia677 (talk) 22:43, 31 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I got the first message about finding photos. Several photos on Flickr have non-prohibitive copyrights.
  • Go to Flickr and in "advanced search" check all 3 boxes under "only search within Creative Commons-licensed content".
  • Save the largest sized picture to your computer.
  • Go to [1]. (this is the "Flickinfo tool" from this page [2])
  • Enter the Flickr URL for the largest-sized photo you just downloaded. This tool will extract the photo's info. Then "open upload form". Under "licensing", select "uploaded to Flickr Creative Commons Attribution 2.0". Then upload.
  • Don't forget to copy down the file name.

Cheers. Magnolia677 (talk) 23:18, 31 December 2013 (UTC)

Much obliged :)

Altgens FAC

ATinySliver, my apologies for not going to the Ike Altgens FAC earlier, even though I said that I would go take a look at it, and now it seems like I'm too late. If it's any consolation, I doubt that it would've passed anyway, even with my input. I suggest that you make requests for reviews earlier so that you have plenty of time to address concerns. To make up for dropping the ball, I wouldn't mind doing an informal peer review of the article, and this time I promise to get to it sooner. That way, my Catholic guilt will be assuaged and the article will be more prepared the next time you submit it to FAC. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 16:40, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, Christine—if it helps, "dropping the ball" hardly rests on your shoulders; it certainly was a group effort here. I listed it, read the concerns, addressed the concerns, and watched as nothing happened. Literally, nothing happened. Even after spamming a few reviewers, nothing happened. Then, it's closed and archived because nothing happened. With appropriate apologies to your Catholic sensibilities, fuck it. :) —ATinySliver/ATalkPage 18:32, 28 March 2014 (UTC)
Ha ha. Listen, I sympathesize; I've been in similar situations plenty myself, so I know it can be exceedingly frustrating. I feel your pain, man. Maybe if you had asked more people? I dunno, sometimes it just happens. So...what can I do? Are you telling me to pursue romance with my SO, or you telling me to forget about it? ;) Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 20:08, 28 March 2014 (UTC)
Your SO is an "it"?! Sorry to hear that...
But, seriously, if there was something you were inclined to do in the future with this article, I'd certainly support that. As for actually taking part in that process again, nope. I'm done. (And, I did ask everyone on the short list.) :D —ATinySliver/ATalkPage 20:19, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

Zapruder

He said something along the lines in his testimony; "...being I was here and he was hit on this line and he was hit right in the head--I saw it right around here, so it looked like it came from here and it could come from there".

Also, like Altgens, I think Zapruder deserves more mention that just over 11,930 words. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.141.241 (talk) 21:04, 13 April 2014 (UTC)

Did you know Lincoln was smiling after he was shot?

I have posted words from Katherine M. Evans account about Lincoln smiling after he was shot on several articles because I cannot put one on here due to the article being protected. In "We Saw Lincoln Shot" by Tim Good, on page 148, Katherine M. Evans said Lincoln WAS smiling after he was shot; "I looked and saw President Lincoln unconscious, his head dropping on his breast, his eyes closed, but with a smile still on his face". While it may be an unnecessary detail, I just thought it would be good, bittersweet and heartwarming to let readers, especially fans of Lincoln know that Mr. Lincoln actually did hear Hawk's funny line and passed into unconsciousness with laughter and a smile on his face. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.135.101 (talk) 16:32, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

An interesting tidbit, thank you. I noticed you've also left this on the article's talk page, as you should. I neither patrol Assassination of Abraham Lincoln nor am I familiar with its history, so with any luck someone who is will act accordingly. Cheers! —ATinySliver/ATalkPage 17:05, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

Emma Watson

Hi,

I notice you reverted an edit on Emma's page, and you have previously commented on the British use of the term "semester". Actually, I don't think we British ever use this particular word at all (nor tremester). In the UK, the academic year is divided into three "terms", and if we were to refer to something happening at the end of one we would indeed say "end of term" (without the definite article). The word "semester" is distincly American English and so it isn't really possible to exemplify its usage in British English. This isn't really terribly important, but I guess that since Emma is attending an American institution it is correct to use American terminology. Since that terminology has no active use in British English, I'd say that on this occasion the American approach is the one we should adopt, notwithstanding that the article is written in British English.

I don't think many people care whether the word "the" is included or not and I don't mean to criticize - just to clarify :) TriumFant (talk) 11:09, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello @TriumFant: and thanks for the note. As an American I'm always on the lookout for items that will help me with articles about Brits (a onetime colleague and I wrote most of Karen Dotrice, for example). I've found several articles referring to both "end of term" and "end of semester", so removing "the" seemed correct. I was not aware of the semester/term distinction; thanks for passing it on. Cheers! :) —ATinySliver/ATalkPage 23:43, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello there, friend. I remember you created a Userbox for my a while ago and was wondering if you could create one for me that says something like: "This user is unquestionably a total psychopath". Obviously it's a joke, and if you go to my userpage and see my front picture, you will understand perfectly. :) Best regards. Jonas Vinther (talk) 00:20, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

@Jonas Vinther: hello! Since images in userboxes must be free, I have a few potentials for you. I can crop your own image or perhaps use one of these:
Let me know. Cheeers! —ATinySliver/ATalkPage 01:36, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

@Jonas Vinther: how's this?
This editor is obviously a
total psychopath.
"obviously" links to joke; "total psychopath" links to Joker (comics). Of course, you can change that or any attribute for that matter. Cheers! —ATinySliver/ATalkPage 20:29, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
It looks awesome mate. Thanks so much. By the way, does creating a userbox take a lot of time or is a 2 minute thing? because, I would also love one that says "this user is founder and chairman of a company", but if it's a big deal I, of course, won't trouble you. Jonas Vinther (talk) 21:19, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
@Jonas Vinther: it normally doesn't take very long; you likely already copied the code when you edited this page, so experiment with colors and images (images in userboxes must be free, no fair-use) using your own sandbox, which I just created for you. (The userbox template is here, providing the various parameters, usually only a small handful of which are used.) Cheers! —ATinySliver/ATalkPage 21:36, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
Thank you, mate. Jonas Vinther (talk) 21:38, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

bureaucracy and WP

Please don't be deterred by the bureaucracy here. This is after all a very large enterprise, with thousand of people working independently at the same time with almost no formal coordination, almost no supervision, and very little training. to help deal with it, a number of formal conventions have been established. Unfortunately, the sort of people that like to work here are exactly the sort of people who are not very skilled at drawing up formal conventions or procedures, and the net result is a mass of partially contradictory instructions and rules, some important, some not; some enforced, some not. The response to a rule that has proven impractical is usually to add several supplementary rules, rather that to revise the original, and after 11 years, it produces quite a jumble.

Some of us find it fun to manipulate the rules to get a reasonable result. But the true purpose of working here is to build an encyclopedia, and I will normally try to get to a reasonable result as directly as possible. Some people though insist on their interpretation of the rules regardless of the result, and I have also become rather experienced at countering them in their own frame of reference when necessary. As I'm pretty much an inclusionist on most topics, I tend to concentrate at AfD and AfC.

My advice is to concentrate on providing good sourced articles. If you want to learn process, don;t be afraid of making errors. There's no other way to do it, because you need to learn not the letter or the rules, but the way we use the and the accepted boundaries. DGG ( talk ) 17:53, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Thank you @DGG: for the note, it's very much appreciated. You may find, especially if you've read my user page, that I do try to keep these ideals in mind in spite of the occasional frustration. ATinySliver/ATalkPage 18:10, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Information icon Please do not attack other editors. Comment on content, not on contributors. Personal attacks damage the community and deter users. Please stay cool and keep this in mind while editing. Thank you. Note that everyone is a volunteer here. You are holding me to an investigative standard for tagging Indie Rights, when you fail to note this is a volunteer based operation, so I have no obligation to "..or learn to actually contribute thereto." Per Wikipedia:Civility: "Nobody likes to be bossed about by an editor who appears to believe that they are "superior"; nobody likes a bully." You clearly don't follow your own advice just in attempt to pin "self-appointed notability watchdog" with the addition of the Notability tag at Medical Cadet Corp. If you did investigate, you would find one of the recommended and one of my preferred methods of dealing with non-notable articles, but you did not do so. --Spshu (talk) 19:44, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

While friendly notices are allowed, they should be limited and nonpartisan in distribution and should reflect a neutral point of view. I would really appericate it if you would stop wikihounding me like you've been doing at RfP, twice actually. Just because someone nominates an article you contributed to for deletion doesn't mean you should go and undermine everything else they are doing. Any further attempts and I will request an IBAN. @EoRdE6: Seriously? Four hours later? I had legitimate concerns with your ability to collaborate with other editors. These concerns were exacerbated with this edit, summarized by "withdrawn, this is getting nowhere". It went somewhere, all right—resoundingly in the opposite direction from your intent. Then, in your zeal to argue with everyone who disagreed, you flat out lied to us (your research into the article's history argues strongly against this being a mere oversight, assumptions of good faith notwithstanding).
Meantime, don't threaten me. Want to recommend a ban? Just do it. ATinySliver/ATalkPage 02:52, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

Not a vio

The Brown article: As it was worded prior to your last change, it really wasn't a violation of OR/SYNTH if you looked at the references attached to the content. It's fine the way it is now, but it would have been fine if it had stayed the way it was. -- WV 06:13, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

@Winkelvi: Hello! I have in fact read the cited source—in fact, all of them since joining in the care-taking of this article. I just read it again, and still don't see where "public perception" is "complicated" by the announcement. If we can't point to someone actually saying so (and even a news reporter would need to cite such an assertion), it is a vio. Cheers! —ATinySliver/ATalkPage 06:37, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
Content preceding what I had edited (and you reverted out again) already set up the wording. In fact, after reverting me (twice) you even edited that wording and didn't see a problem with was was already there. Here is what I'm referring to, Sliver: "The announcement caused controversy when it was revealed that, before becoming romantically involved with Gordon...". The controversy already existed with public and family perception, the wedding announcement and then the reveal of their non-marriage continued the controversy over their entire relationship. So no, not OR/SYNTH at all. -- WV 15:45, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
Actually—and, good catch, I completely glossed over that—that should read something to the effect that it caused controversy within the family (edit: all I can find in reliable sources re any public "controversy" is some unspecified "critics"), and the cited source doesn't really support even that. I'll be fixing it presently. —ATinySliver/ATalkPage 20:34, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
I'm sensing some article ownership happening. I edit the article, you revert it or immediately change it. What's up with that? -- WV 03:50, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
@Winkelvi: that's not correct, and no ownership or disrespect is intended. I'm fixing things I see that strike me as wrong, regardless of who made the edit. (And I changed "her" to "Houston"—not having researched its editor—because "Brown ... her" struck me as potentially confusing. Not all of us are proficient in English, and I try to keep that in mind when editing. (Edit: also, "being involved" is grammatically poor; it's essentially newsspeak, giving a false sense of something still happening that should be in the past tense.) —ATinySliver/ATalkPage 03:57, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you mean by "not all of us are proficient in English". We don't dumb down English Wikipedia articles because not everyone reading said articles speak/read English as a first language. -- WV 04:41, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

() I neither intend nor advocate "dumbing down"; I advocate clarity. The English Wikipedia entertains people the world over, not all of whom are proficient with the language. If I believe something requires clarity, I will be bold in making an edit that I believe benefits the reader and, therefore, the article and, therefore, the encyclopedia. Even speaking within the parameters of your apparently intense dislike of "that" (), there are occasions in which its omission is grammatically inaccurate and/or creates a meaning different than intended. This is among the changes I will make to—admittedly belaboring the point—improve an article—if, again admittedly, as I see it. Cheers! —ATinySliver/ATalkPage 05:10, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

Um, Wikipedia isn't meant to "entertain" anyone. It's an encyclopedia. An encyclopedia deserves -- no, it demands -- encyclopedic prose. -- WV 05:14, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
Agreed and expected, including of myself. Meantime, with respect, you misinterpret my use of "entertains", defined in this case as accepting or hosting visitors. (Edit: that having been said, I would argue that—alright, alright, I would argue—your definition of "entertains" is too narrow. Is not reading and learning a form of entertainment, or have we eschewed something so fundamental? []) —ATinySliver/ATalkPage 05:19, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

The few words about Polish language

I believe that you can use Google Translator, but you chose bad version of translation. Yes, of course "Pan" means "Lord", but not only. It also means "Sir" or "Mister", maybe in USA is other tradition, but in Poland we always say "Panie" (for men) or "Pani" (for women) to strangers. Max Kolonko also uses this form, when he says to us. Kubala95 (talk) 17:35, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

Sorry, re-read your talk page comments and actions there, I think you were well-intentioned and good meaning there. Just came off sort of as a shocker to see my comments edited by someone that was not myself. Thanks for your talk page participation there at the article discussion page. Much appreciated! — Cirt (talk) 02:55, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
@Cirt: You are correct, I was moving my own comment; "editing" yours was evidently an unwanted side effect. Cheers! —ATinySliver/ATalkPage 02:57, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
Ah, in that case, once again, please accept my sincere apologies for my above initial tone. — Cirt (talk) 02:58, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
My thanks, and apologies unnecessary. ATinySliver/ATalkPage 02:59, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Smileys

Noticed your use of {{smiley|size=20px}} for at Talk:Leonard Nimoy
{{P}} or {{=D}} is a simple way of getting a wp:smiley, though not quite as large as your coding, You can use {{P|size=30px}} for a larger though. {{P|biggrin}} or {{=D}} = . 220 of Borg 05:23, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Ah, much obliged! I've used {{p|grin}} before, which is the same as {{p|biggrin}}. ATinySliver/ATalkPage 05:28, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
So they are! , grin '' and biggrin ''. I thought they were different! to me! 220 of Borg 05:54, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Don't worry nobody will have me to kick around for much longer anyways. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Samsamcat (talkcontribs)

Which reminds me: were you actually planning to contribute to an encyclopedia—which requires the collaboration of everyone involved—or are you going to keep announcing your retirement over and over? —ATinySliver/ATalkPage 11:52, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
