WikiProject Award
WikiProject National Register of Historic Places Award | ||
This award has been bestowed upon you, AgnosticPreachersKid by IvoShandor in recognition of quality content and stub creation for articles within the scope of WikiProject National Register of Historic Places. Keep up the excellent work. IvoShandor (talk) 08:32, 4 May 2008 (UTC) |
I thought you had earned this. :) IvoShandor (talk) 08:32, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks! Can you tell I'm a little addicted to this project? ;-) After looking at your NRHP article contributions, it appears you've deserved this award about 50 times. Cheers. APK yada yada 08:54, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- My addiction comes and goes but I take a lot of road trips and visit a lot of NRHP sites so I like to do the articles, I've learned a lot about local history that way. I got the award back when it first came out so no worries there, I have enough of those to pump anyone's ego anyway. I keep an eye on the new article at WP:NRHP because I like to see the new photos and I noticed your numerous contributions, like the nickname btw. Up late and rambling, the bane of the third shifter on a day off. :) IvoShandor (talk) 09:08, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, that's why I like the project. Like one of my userboxes says, I'm a history buff and I've learned alot about Wake County, North Carolina (especially Raleigh) history from the project. I'm sure my username raises a few eyebrows among select editors, but contrary to some accusations I've received, I'm not POV-pushin on any religious articles. In fact, I've created articles about churches. On a side note, I see you're a member of the ghost town project. I was looking at this list yesterday and I plan on writing articles about Brunswick Town and Buffalo City. The first won't be a problem because I've found numerous sources. The other might be an issue. I've only found these sources so far: 1, 2, picture. I assume ghost cities are automatically notable, like NRHPs. APK yada yada 09:32, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

- Make sure you do a Google Books search for your missing towns, they are often written about in older pubic domain local histories, a lot of these texts are full view on Google Books. I think all settlements are pretty much automatically notable. Of course, the definition of ghost towns is usually up in the air. If there are no buildings I usually call it a defunct town or village or whatever if there are buildings and no people, to me that fits the definition of a traditional ghost town (last time I checked that article was pretty much an unreferenced heap of crap just FYI). For Illinois we have Category:Ghost towns in Illinois with a sub cat of Category:Defunct towns in Illinois. It works well, though settlements might be a better word than "towns" because of the legal definition that "town" has in most jurisdictions. IvoShandor (talk) 09:57, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Have you been following this:
Wikipedia:Global Economicsand the extensive thread on ANI about it? Aleta Sing 03:29, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- No, what's the synopsis. Also, can you please look at this and comment. The IP has tried to intimidate User:Parkwells and other users with legal threats. For some reason, no one has done anything about it. I see people blocked all the time at ANI for legal threats, but the only response I can get on the latest thread is from someone who calls me "bro." APK yada yada 03:36, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

I have some more to add, but I was ready to go ahead and post what was already completed. Eno River theology
Argh, I feel like we've got way too much discussion of the Buddhism subset of the theology represented compared to everything else. But I'm not seeing a whole lot else. We can get maybe a sentence or two from the Pagan refs. But that's it. There's got to be a whole range of humanists, agnostics, liberal Christians, etc. that we're missing, but none of the refs talk about those. Even their own page doesn't talk about the diversity of theological belief that I'm pretty certain must exist there. Aleta Sing 02:39, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm, it looks good so far. Yeah, so it's totally my sandbox and you ended up doing all the work. Sorry! The other article and the 100th episode of Dancing With the Stars drew my attention away. I agree about adding the pagan references. If there's not too much more to get from the sources we found, then I guess it's done? It's a very popular church with the liberal christian crowd in Durham. I'm surprised there aren't more articles on it. APK yada yada 02:52, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- I've added some more. I actually found a list of groups on their page which gave me something to work with... a little bit anyway so it doesn't look like the entire thing could be renamed ERBC. Aleta Sing 03:53, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
North Carolina Religious Coalition for Marriage Equality
This has come up a couple of times recently, with Pullen Memorial and now Eno River. I bet it's notable enough for an article. Would you be interested in another collaboration? Aleta Sing 04:05, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- Definitely. I'm only finding a few sources so far. (1, 2, 3). There might be some in the reference section for Pullen and Eno. APK yada yada 04:47, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- Here's one from the Pullen article. APK yada yada 04:51, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
How you durrin? I posted links to several Flickr creative commons photos of the the GPI on my subpage here at the top. If you have time, and since you have actually been there, please look at them and let me know which one looks best for the article. I'll upload it to commons and post it. I wanna see if you pick the one I picked. There are more on Flickr, but I got bored (ADD, you know). Peace. — Becksguy (talk) 05:18, 5 May 2008 (UTC) — PS, unless you would rather post it.
- I like this one, but crop the extra junk off the top. I'd also suggest using this other one for the wider view and fall color. Aleta Sing 05:30, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
(ec):Thank you for doing that! I like this or this the most, but it's up to you. (I love the Fall season picture and I love going to the NC mountains during the Fall) Are you going to add more than one pic to the article? Like "View from the Grover Park Inn balcony." APK yada yada 05:31, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Good idea about a view from the balcony, APK, and I agree Aleta, the first one needs cropping. Should we also have a front view? All the best photos I found have been of the back, which is understandable, as that view is fantastic. We all three agreed on the fall colors one. I guess we shouldn't have more than three photos, as it's not a long enough article and would get overwhelmed. I only have time to place one photo today, I think, as I have to be at the church at the crack of noon. Security lady duty, you know, then going to Sunday church dinner (on a Monday) Ohh Lordy! — Becksguy (talk) 05:57, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- I have a picture of the front view. Oh, we're talking about the hotel. <grins> Hmm, I think there may only be room for the 3 pix mentioned, just make them small. APK yada yada 06:02, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Drat. None of the photos will upload to commons, so I have to do some checking before finishing this, but I have to get to bed now as it's 3:10 AM. — Becks Talk to me 07:11, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Well... I figured out the problem. A creative commons license isn't enough. They were CC-BY (CC with attribution), but also "no commercial use" and/or "no derivatives" and that makes them unacceptable for Wikipedia or commons. So if there is a dollar sign, or an equal sign under the photo, you can't upload it to Wiki. Drat. Double drat. Explicative deleted. The only photos I could find on Flickr that meet these impossible requirements are these, but none of them are really that good. Looksee and let me know. I suggest we place one of the best and I will continue to look, and maybe email the Inn (they have a press office) and ask them for a free photo released to commons for the article. Who knows, they might be willing. Or ask one of the Flicker sources to release on just CC-BY. There are other sources also, but they all take time to search. — Thanks for the tip, APK. — Becks Talk to me 21:13, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
- Beware of contacting the hotel. They might be willing to help, but I contacted Artspace in Raleigh about uploading pics and the reply was basically, "We need to see the article first, add things you might miss, and see if we approve. If we do, we'll add pix." Uh, no thanks. I don't think I'll be contacting any more organizations. Maybe the Grove Park Inn will be different? As far as the pic options, I think this this are the best ones. You might want to ask a second opinion though, I'm not that great with photography. APK yada yada 21:49, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, APK. OK, finally got the special Flickr upload tool to work. This automatically checks commons license, and ensures photo is legit, also so much easier to use. The desktop I'm using constantly freezes and I've lost my work several times on Internet Explorer. I started using Word to write articles so I can save my work after every few sentences. Today, we live in a 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath 1700 sq ft house. Mortgage: $900/month. Go figger... To be fair, Chicago is to Raleigh what an orgasm is to a coma, at least in terms being a real city... But now that I have a family with a kid, the quiet pace of life here is nice... --Jayron32.talk.contribs 06:24, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- I think that's why so many people from up North have moved to the area. It's cheaper, lots of jobs, nicer people (generally speaking of course), and like you said, a quieter pace of life. The population increase percentages for towns in Wake County is insane. APK thinks I'm moving back down there when I get the chance. People are mean here and I'm tired of paying high rent. I got you beat. Mine is 1700, although my place is in a nice historic building in Dupont. I actually got a deal. - Yeah, well there's a big difference between Dupont Circle and the Near West Side/Illinois Medical District where I lived. If I had the money, I'da paid $500 to live in a nicer place than that.--Jayron32.talk.contribs 15:49, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- Tell me about it. My wife and I moved here from Chicago. In Chicago, we had a one-bedroom apartment in an asian student slum that smelled like curry and soy sauce 24/7. Rent: $1200/month.
- NP. BTW, I'm still working on getting a picture for the BRC. I have to buy a robe and borrow a camera, but I'm saving up for a new laptop and iPod since they were stolen. The desktop I'm using constantly freezes and I've lost my work several times on Internet Explorer. I started using Word to write articles so I can save my work after every few sentences. I long for the days of cheap rent at my old apartment in Raleigh. (my D.C. rent is almost triple the old amount) Those were the days. APK yada yada 05:26, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- No, I never joined the project. I prolly should... But thanks for adding my name to the receiving list. --Jayron32.talk.contribs 05:08, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
A places-to-retire book talked about the J turn. Folks from the cold NE would retire to Florida, discover that it was very humid during the summer and/or that they didn't like the culture (or whatever), so they would turn around and come back half way up north to the Carolinas, especially inland or near the mountains. Makes sense. It's starting to look good to me also for retirement. BTW, check out the comment above on Grove Park Inn. Improved. Suggestion, APK: Why don't you reassess the article, since you are a member of the NC project. I think it's much better than a stub class. — Becks Talk to me 14:59, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks Aleta. — Becks Talk to me 15:20, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, haha, I had not even seen your suggestion for reassessment, Becks. I was wondering for what on earth you were thanking me! I just reassess things when I think they need it, whether I'm part of the project or not. If someone from the project disagrees with me, she/he can always revert me. Aleta Sing 15:25, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for adding the pic and working on the article. There are ALOT of NC project articles that need assessment and tweaking. It will take a long time to get around to all of them. APK yada yada 20:46, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- Becks, you mentioned possible retirement in the NC mountains/Asheville area. It's a very cute city with lots of Art Deco buildings and boutique stores. It's kind of a "New Age" town. Lots of environmentalists, vegetarians, spiritual centers, and a ton of gay-friendly people. It seems like half of the businesses downtown are run by lesbians and a few gays. I just noticed there's very little mention of these aspects in the article. p.s. If you ever decide to move there, I know just the place you should buy. APK yada yada 21:52, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- Its a nice place, but mowing the lawn must be a bitch... And don't get me started on cleaning the windows... --Jayron32.talk.contribs 22:04, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- Funny you should mention that. My friend has a house near Asheville, right off the Blue Ridge Parkway, and last summer I helped him plant some shrubs and mow his lawn one weekend. Part of his lawn is at a 45 degree angle. Yeah, it was an interesting experience. Here's the view from his front balcony. APK yada yada 22:24, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

- Funny. I like the Biltmore, but this would be more in my price range. I do love Art Deco and Mission Furniture, much like some of the furniture the Grove Park Inn has. (Note to self: WP needs an article on mission furniture, or at least a section in the furniture article.) I would like to see trees that aren't in a park, like the balcony view just above. I am thinking of moving. Maybe NC, upstate NY, New England. Someplace with trees. Don't really know yet. I had a really good friend who lived in Chapel Hill, but lost track of him. He loved NC. I guess I'm looking for someplace cool without the oppressive and killing summers in NYC. Not looking for seaside or beach places. A lake yes. A creek yes. Did I mention trees? — Becks Talk to me 06:55, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

- Your output is becoming nothing short of prolific. Take solace in knowing that I don't really contribute much to DYK anymore, you wouldn't believe the amount of hate that high volume DYK contributions generate (actually, on second thought, maybe you'd believe it). The few I get now are because others have taken the time to nominate my new articles. Not that I have anything against DYK, there are some great people over there to be sure. So fear not, worthiness should not be judged by DYK contributions, of course. And, at the rate you're creating stuff you could pass me in no time. It's hard to stay focused on one topic, I used to have that problem a lot. IvoShandor (talk) 12:34, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

- It might be long enough, but I don't know how to check the number of characters in an article. I think DYK requires 1,500. Last week I asked an admin that is involved with DYK how to check the character amount, but I should have known better. He doesn't reply to my questions for some reason.
