Hungarian racing?
[edit]Hey, if you speak Hungarian, can you help me with translation? I’m looking at this article and machine translation has its limits. I’m trying to figure out the names of the horses this man owned and what races they won. Can you help at all?
Hi, try to use German http://anno.onb.ac.at/anno-suche#searchMode=simple&query=%22Anton+Sigray%22&from=1&sort=date+asc
Use German form of the name Anton Sigray. Allgemeine Sport-Zeitung is top source since 1880. If you need more assistance just wrote here.
Thanks. Unfortunately, I can’t read German, either. The main horse I’m curious about was, I think, named Napolopo. I’d be very interested in knowing more about that horse. As for Sigray, I’m trying to figure out his equestrian accomplishments. I have some English sources that say he played polo, but I don’t know that for sure. Can you tell from those articles? I know he raised horses at his estate in Ivanc, and I think all were lost during WWII. I’ve written a few emails to various sources in Hungary, but the language barrier is too much to overcome. Any help you can offer is appreciated. Basically, my interest in his family is because he married a daughter of Marcus Daly, and Sigray’s daughter Margit wound up inheriting the Bitterroot Stock Farm here in Montana where I live ...Montanabw(talk) 05:58, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
Yes, he played polo and also riding steeplechases as a gentlemen rider. I'll do some research, but now I'm busy, it will take some time, maybe a few weeks. I'll let you know on your talk page.
- I’d be glad for anything you. can do. If you can post any URLs that can go through machine translation, I can do that much. Just need RS...Montanabw(talk) 01:02, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
Hi Montanabw,
I compare performances of Naplopó:
2yo in 1925
16.7. Budapest 1 Balaton Dij 1000m, 19 000 Pengő
16.8. Budapest 2 Berczy Karoly Preis 1100m, ?
20.9. Budapest 1 Biennial Tenyésztés 1000m, 105 000 P
10.10. Budapest 1 Kozma Ferenc Memorial 1100m, 50 000 P
17.10. Budapest 1 Szt Lazslo Dij 1300m, 95 000 P in record time
25.10. Vienna 1 Austria Preis 1300m, 80 000 Crowns
3yo
2.5. Budapest 1 Nemzeti-Hazafi Dij 1600m, 20 500 P
9.5. Budapest 1 Millenniumi Dij 1800m, 49 000 P
16.5. Budapest 1 Alagi Dij 2000m, 20 000 P
20.6. Budapest 1 Magyar Derby 2400m, 49 000 P
31.7. Budapest 1 Szechenyi Dij 2800m, 2 500 P

4yo
12.5. Budapest 2 Batthyany-Hunyady Dij 1600m, ?
15.5. Budapest 2 Millenniumi Dij 1800m, 40 000 P
At two he was beaten once, at three he goes unbeaten through the season to Grosser Preis von Baden, where he was unplaced, probably due to injury, he not ran again that season.
1st and 2nd in GP von Baden were Indigo and Aurelius, previously 2nd and 4th in Fürstenberg Rennen behind Naplopó.
Here is a photo of Naplopó in article about jockey Janos Gutai: https://library.hungaricana.hu/hu/view/PestMegyeiHirlap_1971_05/?query=%22gut%C3%A1i%20j%C3%A1nos%22&pg=191&layout=s

Best way how to use is open the single year, wrote a keyword to search box on left side up and you see all pages found on left side. You can take a text by mouse and copy to translator and also you can download pdf. Just find download button right up and enter the range from the first to the last page (max 25 pages in one pdf document).
Austrian archive is here:

It's a bit tricky to use. Here is a link to Allgemeine Sport-Zeitung with keyword Sigray:
On right side up (left from word "Dokument") you find a scroll box maybe partially covered. In scroll box you see years and pages with keyword, just choose the page. If you choose a year you must go back to scroll box to choose a page.
For translation you use the text button on right up and find the text you want to translate.
