Why should we say Ivory Coast when they want to be called Côte d'Ivoire? This seems like a simple improvement to the article. 75.164.37.9 (talk) 05:12, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Following up: Most people will look at Wikipedia if they haven't heard of Côte d'Ivoire before. In order for their preferred name to come into common usage, *someone* has to use their preferred name *before* it comes into common usage. This is a Catch-22 and I don't see why it needs to continue to be wrong. 75.164.37.9 (talk) 05:26, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Googling Côte d'Ivoire yields about 206,000,000 results, Googling Ivory Coast yields about 167,000,000 results. This might not be expert linguists research or anything, but this is a very simple indicator that Côte d'Ivoire is now the common name as well as the preferred name. 75.164.37.9 (talk) 05:39, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
