Norfolk Southern Railway

[edit]

The Right History

[edit]

The Norfolk Southern Railway was founded in 1894 as the Southern Railway. It was not founded in 1982 by combining the Southern Railway and the Norfolk and Western Railway together, that's not what happened.

This is what happened: the Southern Railway and the Norfolk and Western Railway teamed up and created a new railroad holding company called Norfolk Southern Corporation (also known as Norfolk Southern Corp or NS Corp) which has its own separate article. The Norfolk Southern Corporation was founded in 1980 and began operations in 1982. After the Norfolk Southern Corporation began operations in 1982, both the Southern Railway and the Norfolk and Western Railway were then placed under the Norfolk Southern Corporation but both railroads remained as separate railroads.

In 1990, the Norfolk Southern Corporation renamed the Southern Railway to Norfolk Southern Railway and transfered the Norfolk and Western Railway to the Norfolk Southern Railway (formerly Southern Railway) but both railroads continued to remain as seperate railroads.

In 1997, the Norfolk Southern Railway (previously known as the Southern Railway) absorbed the Norfolk and Western Railway into its system, officially ending the existence of the Norfolk and Western Railway.

This is the correct history, not the way you had it. I'm going to explain two problems now.

Problem 1- The problem with the history of both the Norfolk Southern Railway and the Norfolk Southern Corporation is that NS Corp doesn't recognize that the Southern Railway and the Norfolk Southern Railway is the same railroad; they see it as two separate railroads which is completely untrue. If you research other Norfolk Southern articles on the web, it will say that the Southern Railway was renamed Norfolk Southern Railway and the Norfolk and Western Railway was absorbed by the renamed Norfolk Southern Railway in 1997.

Problem 2- NS Corp doesn't promote the Norfolk Southern Railway seperately. It acknowledges the railroad as a separate company from the holding company but NS Corp promotes themselves and the railroad as one big company which easily confuses Wikipedia people to only look at the Norfolk Southern Railway article and not the Norfolk Southern Corporation article. When Wikipedia users added information about the Canadian Pacific stuff, they only added it to the Norfolk Southern Railway article and not the Norfolk Southern Corporation article because they don't know that the article about the holding company exists even though the link to the holding company article is placed in the first sentence.

By explaining problems 1 and 2, I understand why you made the edit on the Norfolk Southern Railway article. I'll put the link to the holding company at the bottom here again and I'll put it in bold:

Norfolk Southern Corporation

Not going all the way with your edit

[edit]

When you edit the Norfolk Southern Railway article, you only edited the top of the page and not the rest of the article. If you believed the railroad was eatablished 1982, than you should've removed the Southern Railway information out of the article but you didn't do that.

With your edit to the railroad article, it would say that the Norfolk Southern Railway was established in 1982 with the merging of the Southern Railway and the Norfolk and Western Railway at the top of the page and through the rest of the page it would still say the railroad was founded in 1894 as the Southern Railway and renamed Norfolk Southern Railway in 1990. Saying the railroad was founded in 1982 at the top of the page and saying the railroad was founded in 1894 through the rest of the page doesn't make sense and it will confuse the reader.

Also, it is impossible for both railroads to rename themselves as one railroad, only one railroad can rename itself. You edit was:

"The railroad was renamed from Southern Railway and the Norfolk Western Railway to its current name Norfolk Southern Railway."

That doesn't make sense, only one railroad can rename itself.

Also, you typed Norfolk and Western Railway wrong. You typed it as "Norfolk Western Railway", that's incorrect. There is no such thing as Norfolk Western Railway.

You also put that when both railroads merged, it made the railroad the 4th oldest railroad in North America. How is that possible? That is impossible. If the Southern Railway and the Norfolk and Western Railway did merged together to form a different railroad (which did not happen) than it would be a new railroad then and the new railroad would either be the 6th or 7th oldest railroad; I'm questioning the actual founding date of CSX Transportation, not the CSX Corporation.

Conclusion

[edit]

Again, the Norfolk Southern Railway was established in 1894 as the Southern Railway and renamed Norfolk Southern Railway in 1990. And then in 1997, the Norfolk Southern Railway absorbed the Norfolk and Western Railway, ending that railroad's existence.

The Norfolk Southern Corporation was established in 1980 and began operations in 1982 by taking over the Southern Railway (now Norfolk Southern Railway) and the Norfolk and Western Railway (ended its existence in 1997).

I am being truthful on Wikipedia and I'm giving you the correct history of the Norfolk Southern Railway and the Norfolk Southern Corporation.

I'll just say that to make this easier for railfans, the Norfolk Southern Corporation really needs to rename the Norfolk Southern Railway back to Southern Railway and then promote the railroad separately. The Norfolk Southern Corporation would not be required to renamed themselves; only the railroad gets renamed, not the holding company. Granthew (talk) 03:21, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
