Hello Spamlist!

[edit]

Ah, my first ever spam mass produced and mailed to the spamlist. Well first of all let me re-state that we have an irc channel, #wp-esperanza, and its been rather empty, so I'd appreciate it if you come, even if you just idle about. Now, the evil polls have closed, and I left a justification note for running the evil polls. Nothing has really changed, but at least I have somewhat of a consensus. I hope to figure out a way to overturn my power to JCarriker somehow, I'll figure out a way :-) Meanwhile, I've been busy reforming the mediation system where I am the chairman now, er, acting chairman. Enjoy your spam, with extra vikings. Redwolf24 (talk) 00:36, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar - thanks

[edit]

Thanks for the Barnstar Phil - much appreciated. I make all these little edits while I wait for a Big Idea to germinate - trouble is I've been fifty plus years awaiting, and no big idea has come by yet :-( Bob aka Linuxlad 13:26, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the welcome!

[edit]

Thanks for your speedy and friendly welcome. And for the list of helpful links to get me started.

I adore the idea and the reality of Wikipedia and will do what I can to help it grow. See ya!

[edit]

Thanks, FireFox, for the barnstar. Nice to be recognized. Welcome to Wikipedia... seems like you haven't been here for too long but have still done quite a bit of good work. If you need any help translating Sp, Fr, or It articles I can give you a hand. Since you're so interested in languages, I highly recommend starting on Chinese as soon as possible for (a) the advantage gained by having a longer period of study compared to peers who'll probably begin only at university (b) the fact that over 1.4 billion people speak it or other dialects (c) the special ability you will gain in learning a language few Westerners even master, (d) a gateway into an amazing culture/literature. Thanks again --Dpr 18:31, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Resignation

[edit]

Hello spam list, look at this. Essjay is the new leader of Esperanza, and I'm interested in seeing how he runs it. I'm busy doing other work... Please comment at that talk page there. I will still probably run the spamlist though. Redwolf24 (talk) 22:57, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Advisory Committee election deadline set

[edit]

Our new admin general, Essjay, has set the date for the advisory committee elections, that date being October 7th. By UTC it is October 5th right now. So see WP:ESP/E for voting in two days, and add yourself to the list if you're interested in running. On a personal note, I'm considering running, as I only resigned as admin general because of time. I'm sure I could help out on the advisory committee... Anywho, watchlist that page, and be sure to read the voting method too. Regards, Redwolf24 (talk) 01:08, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

WP:CP

[edit]

Hi, you've reported copyright infringements to WP:CP in the last week, a new measure was recently passed to allow the speedy deltion of new pages that are cut and paste copyvios. Please follow these instructions if you come across this type of copyvio. Thanks. --nixie 00:11, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Blatant copyright infringements may now be "speedied"

If an article and all its revisions are unquestionably copied from the website of a commercial content provider and there is no assertion of permission, ownership or fair use and none seems likely, and the article is less than 48 hours old, it may be speedily deleted. See CSD A8 for full conditions.

After notifying the uploading editor by using wording similar to:

{{nothanks-sd|pg=page name|url=url of source}} -- ~~~~

Blank the page and replace the text with

{{db-copyvio|url=url of source}}

to the article in question, leaving the content visible. An administrator will examine the article and decide whether to speedily delete it or not.

My Userpage

[edit]

Would you be horribly offended if I chganged my userpage so that it is halfway inbetween your version and mine? I like your revision a lot and a lot of it I will keep. However, I think there's currently a lot of whitespace that needs elimination. Please don't take this as an insult of your design as there is lots In really like. --Celestianpower hablamé 17:16, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My Old Account

[edit]

Well I'd love to tell you but to be totally truthful with you, I've forgotten that. It is coming up for 2 years now since I gave up with the account. I remember coming back from a business trip, and finding that I had forgotten my password. I didn't know what to do about it so left it and gave up on Wikipedia. In August I got chatting with a friend and Wikipedia popped up in the conversation. I resolved with myself I would give it another go and here I am. All I remember of my old user name was it began with Grant (my name) and had about four randomly chosen numbers after it. The latter though is very unclear. Sorry about that. I've found Wikiwoohoo much easier to remember (I have another friend absolutely obsessed with shouting "WOOHOO!" and I've written my username and password on a scrap of paper by the PC screen. RE: Barnstar > Thank you!

[edit]

Hello! I hope you're well. I wanted to thank you for awarding me a 'barnstar.' What exactly are they, though? :)

As well, I do not presume to do or be more or less than anyone else, but I'm curious about the distinction between a minor star and a major one. I am not necessarily vane, but I think I've made some rather 'major' contributions too, including:

  • holding vote and, consequently, working on inclusion of HDI in country infoboxes/template
  • uploads of numerous accurate (or moreso than previous), unique flags, maps, and other images (e.g., Greek letters)
  • editions to 'Canada'-related articles, including 'mediation' and information provision for Canada's name
  • Star Trek and other minutiae

Anyhow, I'm honoured! Thanks again for the acknowledgement; take care! E Pluribus Anthony 01:53, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Esperanzians! A few announcements.

The Advisory Committee election results are in. In tranch A are Acetic Acid and Flcelloguy. In tranch B are Ryan Norton and Bratsche.

My other annoouncement is that our founder, JCarriker, has founded Esperanza's sister project, Wikipediology. I have written two essays here (my name is Matt Binder). My essays are under Teenage Wikipedians and Anon Editors.

On behalf of myself and Jay Carriker and the other wikipediologists, I would appreciate it if you were to join.

personal message / confusing

[edit]

"Thanks for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and has been removed or reverted. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia. Thanks."

that's the message i got from you. i have no idea what it means, or what it refers to, or if i am even the correct recipient. you have a strangely self-assured tone for somebody who hasn't made it clear what in god's name you're talking about, so maybe i am not the intended recipient.

i've never performed any "tests." recently i've added comments to a few DISCUSSION pages, about critical issues relating to whatever subject at hand. i added to the DISCUSSION pages, not the main articles, because of the problem that i described: certain individuals erase content not based on its merit or its relevance for an encyclopedic entry, but based on their own taste or distaste with the facts presented. in this case, i didn't think i'd be "treading" on even the most neurotic wiki-stewards, since i was.... discussing..... on the discussion page.

so with that in mind, i have to assume that your message is nothing but a trumpeting of the fact that you disapprove of my additions to the "discussions" and rather than confront those elements on their own terms, you've deleted them altogether.

this might surprise you, but the last time i actually edited an ARTICLE, a moderator messaged me to compliment my contributions and suggested that i make a registered account.

so with that in mind, i think you're out of line, and i'd like to know what you deleted and why you did it. (on another note, your use of the term "our" in "our encyclopedia" seems to have excluded me, and seems to miss-- or maybe malign-- the fact that it's as much mine as it is yours.)

i don't have a static IP, so you should say what you have to say here. (preceding unsigned comment by 128.119.232.206 (talk • contribs) )

sorry for the mixup

[edit]

"Sferrier"s link to the talk-page definitely pointed to your page. Sorry for the mixup. I don't know if he intentionally misdirected his link or not. When I saw that Sferrier's link pointed to "FireFox" (your page), I figured that he had two accounts, one named Sferrier and one named Firefox. So I went ahead with my communique.

Thank you for replying yourself, and for not deleting my (rather large) addition to your page, thereby allowing me to easily recover my text and send it to a more appropriate place or at least send it in a new direction.

You can see Sferrier's link to you here: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User_talk:Sferrier

Although that link at the bottom isn't the actual link that led me here. In his private message to me, he linked to you.

I have replied more fully on my own talk page, however please know that the link you see there from the FireFox user is his signature on text that he added to my discussion page. Such signatures (as you will see at the end of this comment) is considered part of the Wikipedia guidelines.

Careful with the templates on talk pages

[edit]

Hi FireFox. I noticed a comment you made on someone's page about blanking, and I assume you are using the monobook with some of the automated template actions...because you repeated a mistake I was making for a while. If you've hit the + to edit a new section on the page, and then hit the template for say {{blanking}} then it sooooooorta puts the template message in, but also turns it into something like ====={{blanking}}===== (makes it bold and weird).

I didn't check to see if it was an isolated accident or more common in your edit history, so just wanted to give you a heads up if you didn't know of that interaction. :)

ps - yes, I've been watching that editor who goes up and down the year pages (I'm assuming its a bot) removing links, adding links, etc. I've suggested on the admin noticeboard that this user and another who does similar things be watched very closely, but it was dismissed.

cheers, --Syrthiss 16:52, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

User page & contribution count

[edit]

Hi! Thanks for reverting the vandalism that went on at my User page.

Looking at the history of your user page, I'm amazed to see how often it gets vandalised, and how many rude comments people replace it with. Yet looking at your User talk page, you seem to be relatively popular. :-) I guess with popularity comes hatred, no matter what you do...

One thing I would like to comment on, though, is that your edit count appears to include all edits from all namespaces. You seem to edit User talk pages much more than articles, and User and Wikipedia pages added together also amount to as much as article edits; are you sure you're not betraying yourself by using that figure as your edit count, especially because every time you update your edit count, counts as another edit? I realise I've used all namespace edits in my own edit count before, but now that I've come across this handy edit counter that breaks it down into namespace, I've reduced it to just my article-namespace edits. — Timwi 13:24, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
