Hi, there! Well, first off, I'll start that you can sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes like this: ~~~~ (which would show up as your name followed by a timestamp when you hit save). Other than that, there really is no best way to getting into Wikipedia. I guess you could try finding some articles that interest you and see if you see anything that can be improved, such as grammar or simply an article that's missing key points of information or sources. I think there's a nice little template that people usually give to new accounts somewhere around here that has some helpful things on it, too.. let me see if I can find it...

There we go! Yeah, so that should help. As for the best way to deal with people, I think an important part of any dispute you might have is to simply don't respond to rude comments someone makes. By that I mean, if someone calls you a cow (which should really be a compliment), you would simply not address that and continue focusing on the content of the article. I originally copied my code blatantly from User:Master of Puppets (who I haven't had a chance to chat with in some time, sadly. Nice guy, too.) who (I think) copied it from Template:Hidden. At the time, I had no clue how it worked, but I've since done some reading. :)

Check Template talk:Hidden for a bit more information about the template (it's easier to use it than try to do all the div stuff from scratch) and the actual javascript code is in MediaWiki:Common.js. There's other helpful information at Help:User style.

From what I can tell, it was originally a development by German Wikipedia, though I finally lose where the development is once it hits German. My German is a bit too weak to rely on it much.

You may also want to see the actual userpage code at User:Kylu/main, since the userpage itself is all transclusion, category, and interwiki linkages.
