Re:Prince sources removed
[edit]Hello. I am replying here because IP editors cannot be pinged, even though I generally do not like splitting conversations. The general reason I removed the sources was because MOS:ALBUM states that we do not need to source credits. Did Benoît Clerc or those that contributed to Guitarcloud conduct interviews with Prince and those that worked with him, or are they speaking in their capacity as musicians to state which specific synthesizers and instruments not listed in the liner notes that he used? Are they experienced enough musicians that they can tell a specific synth and guitar just from its sound? Guitarcloud doesn't state its sources, which would generally make it unreliable. If we don't know where a source got their information from (or they're "speaking in their capacity as professional musicians", in other words, guessing), that generally makes it not fit for use on Wikipedia.
I'm not sure of the veracity of what Benoît Clerc states in his book. A Google search tells me he's a professional musician, but as far as I'm concerned, if Prince or his band didn't say what instruments they specifically played, Clerc and whichever other sources you used are using guesswork. So while I had concerns about the reliability of Guitarcloud (and obviously Prince Vault is a Wiki-type website, so fails WP:USERG) for not statig its sources, I also don't think we need 90+ links to Benoît Clerc or to give him explicit credit when there's nothing to indicate on the face of it how he knows what's not printed in the liner notes, or why we're crediting him on each and every Prince article like he's some intimate friend or bandmate who knew everything about Prince. It really just seems like WP:OR on the part of Clerc and Guitarcloud. If you reply, please do so here. I greatly dislike back-and-forths being on my talk page, hence the note at the top. - My apologies for the back and forth thing, I promise I won't do that.
- Benoît Clerc mainly pulls sources from several other sources in regards to information, I'm afraid that he possibly didn't do most of them himself. Guitarcloud has a similar issue but in that case it's just gathering instrumental info. It's more of an archive site so the use of it is up to you. I wouldn't care much for it anymore but if it's an issue I'm ok with it not being there.
- Now, Duane Tudahl, on the other hand, actually did his research so I suggest that at least his information should be added back.
- Thanks again. 2601:147:4700:B420:2062:66F3:C144:7E14 (talk) 18:34, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
- Can you elaborate on how Duane Tudahl did his research? Do we need to explicitly credit him or any of these sources at the top of all of Prince's personnel sections? Can you not just put the citation for his work next to the actual claims themselves? Surely the general credits are in the liner notes (therefore don't need explicit citation per MOS:ALBUM) and the specific claims that you've taken from which of these are reliable sources can be put next to what specific parts they source that are not present in the liner notes. I just don't think that personnel sections need an "Adapted from x, y and z sources" note. The parts that are not from the liner notes can have the citation(s) placed next to them.
