To get some practice editing you can use a sandbox. If you register an account, you can create your own personal sandbox for use any time. It's perfect for working on bigger projects. Then for easy access in the future, you could put a link to it on your user page.
Please remember to:
- Always sign your posts on talk pages. You can do this either by clicking on the button on the edit toolbar or by typing four tildes
~~~~
at the end of your post. This will automatically insert your IP address linked to your contributions page (however, if you create an account, your IP address will be hidden and you will be able to build a custom signature that can link to your own user page), a link to this IP's talk page, and a timestamp. - Leave descriptive edit summaries for your edits. Doing so helps other editors understand what changes you have made and why you made them.
A warm welcome
[edit]I think you may need to read wp:spa and wp:v.Slatersteven (talk) 18:43, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
- Slatersteven, please read WP:AGF, as it applies also to IPs and newly registered members. I may choose to recover the password of my old account or register a new one, but either way, you cannot label an IP or newly registered editor an WP:SPA unless they stick to a single topic over a certain period of time. IPs and newly registered members contribute extensively to the project, and in the age of dynamic IPs, some of us make look more singularly focused than we really are. 217.35.76.147 (talk) 19:01, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
- Problem is, you have stuck to one issue, it is literally all you have edited. I can't judge any other account, as I cannot view it.Slatersteven (talk) 09:53, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- Slatersteven, is it fair to call an IP active for only one day an SPA? 217.35.76.147 (talk) 18:37, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- I asked you to read it, it's a warning that is how you might appear if you continue to only edit in one topic area. Especially given the contentious nature of your edits.Slatersteven (talk) 18:39, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- And it is all you are still doing.Slatersteven (talk) 18:44, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- Slatersteven, is there a policy that stipulates how many edits an IP must make on different topics within their first two days on Wikipedia in order not to qualify as an SPA? Please WP:AGF and WP:FOC. I have made several good contributions to the page, and will now write the text on the Darpa leak section as you recommended. 217.35.76.147 (talk) 18:59, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- No, but if you are taken to wp:ani and all you have done is edit in the same area it will not be a good look. Nor does it seem that anyone but you think s tey were "good contributions".Slatersteven (talk) 19:24, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
Slatersteven, about this edit of yours, the finding was made in an earlier version of the WIV's own website found in the Internet Archives, which is easily verifiable to any reader who reads the Taiwan News article. I know you weren't the one to add it into the article, but your edit does make me wonder if you read the article, so I hope you find this note of value. 217.35.76.147 (talk) 16:37, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
- Can you link to it? As something that has yet to be verified is, unverified.Slatersteven (talk) 16:44, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
- worth saying that Taiwannews is not necessarily the best source for this content, given that it often has a political bias against mainland China. Please note: I’ve said the same thing about SCMP and pro-mainland bias, so this isn’t a pro- or anti-China thing. For contentious topics in general, it is recommended that multiple reliable sources be used. — Shibbolethink (♔ ♕) 20:11, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
- Also that is not "WIV's own website found in the Internet Archive", that is another source.Slatersteven (talk) 08:48, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- You asked me to link "it", so I linked the secondary source. I thought an editor of your experience would know better then to ask for the primary source like Internet Archive, for verification purposes. If you or Shibbolethink think Taiwan News can't be trusted to read the Internet Archive to verify what an older version of the WIV's website had, then we can put it up on [WP:RS/N]]. I believe most sources are WP:BIASED in some way, but if editors believe the matter of verifying this finding is "controversial", then we can leave in the "if verified". I started this discussion only to see if you even read the article. 217.35.76.147 (talk) 13:24, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- it’s not WP:V that I’m concerned about, it’s WP:DUE, WP:NPOV, and WP:RSUW. All three of which are predicated on the source being reliable for the content sourced in an unbiased way. — Shibbolethink (♔ ♕) 17:56, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
Important notice about Discretionary Sanctions
[edit]This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.
You have shown interest in COVID-19, broadly construed. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.
For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.
Edit summaries missing
[edit]Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.
When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:
Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)
I noticed your recent edits to Talk:DRASTIC do not have any edit summaries. Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.
Edit summary content is visible in:
Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. With a Wikipedia account you can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. — Shibbolethink (♔ ♕) 23:58, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
This is the discussion page for an IP user, identified by the user's IP address. Many IP addresses change periodically, and are often shared by several users.
