Dimitrije Vladisavljević

[edit]

Dimitrije Vladisavljević (Trieste, 1778 - Trieste, 1858) was a Serbian writer, translator, educator, and philologist. He is noted for writing the Serbian Grammar for the Italians in 1849.

Dimitrije Vladisavljević was born in Trieste in 1778. His family originally were from South Serbia (now Macedonia). They had emigrated in 1690 to northern Christian territories after the Turks began oppressing the native Orthodox population. Having studied philosophy and languages at the University of Vienna, he went in 1807 as tutor to Trieste where he became the head of the Illyrian (Serbian) community.

At the end of the 18th century, Trieste was not much behind the Vienna. The first public school in Vienna was established in 1771, and in 1774 the Allgemeine Ordnung (Law on Compulsory Elementary Education) came into force in Trieste. The first public (national) school was inaugurated already in 1776, first in German, and immediately thereafter in the Italian language. The school designed by the reformer Johann Ignáz Felbiger (1724-1788) was no longer in Latin, but in the language of the common folk. On March 20, 1777, the Governor of Trieste, Karl von Zizendorf, told the representatives of the Greek-Illyrian community that they could employ, at their own expense, Greek or Illyrian language (as the Serbian language of the Orthodox Church was then called). At the turn of the century Dimitrije Vladisavljević worked in Trieste public schools and in parishes -- of all religious denominations. He became fluent in five languages, Serbian, Russian, Italian, French and German.

Petar II Petrović Njegoš, Vuk Karadžić, Dimitrije Frusić, and Niccolo Tomasseo were his contemporaries with whom he corresponded on a regular basis.

Works

[edit]

His most important works were his textbooks, dealing with grammar and syntax for the Trieste School Board in the early 1800s.

His translation of Weltgeschichte im Auszuge und Zusammenhange (2 volumes, Göttengen, 1792-1801) by German historian August Ludwig von Schlözer awoke much intelligent interest in universal history (Russian and Serbian: Priprava za istoriju svega svijeta radi djece, translated by Dimitrije Vladisavljević from the German of August Ludwig von Schlözer/ preparation for world history for children).

Legacy

[edit]

Dimitrije Vladisavljević's activity was enormous, and he exercised great influence by his lectures as well as his writings, bringing historical study into touch with political science.
