Subdivisions of Scotland

[edit]

Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. We always appreciate when users upload files. However, it appears that one or more of the files you have uploaded or added to a page, specifically Subdivisions of Scotland, may fail our non-free policy. Most often, this involves editors uploading or using a copyrighted file of a living person. For other possible reasons, please read up on our Non-free criteria. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:31, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free content is pretty much never allowed to be used for WP:DECORATIVE purposes for individual entries in tables or list-like tables found in articles per WP:NFCC#1, WP:NFCC#8, WP:NFTABLES and WP:NFLISTS because a link to the primary Wikipedia article where the same non-free content can be seen is considered more than sufficient for Wikipedia's purposes. Proving a rationale for such a use is WP:JUSTONE of the ten non-free content use criteria that a non-free file needs to satisfy each time it's used, and failing just one of these criterion makes the entire non-free use invalid. Of course, you may disagree with thie assessment, and you can seek other opinions at either WP:MCQ or WT:NFCC, but the long-standing common practice has been to not allow this type of non-free use. Finally, one thing about coats of arms is that the written description of the coat-of-arms (i.e. the blazon) is generally not considered eligible for copyright protection as explained in c:COM:COA; typically, only the individual visual representations (i.e. the emblazon) of a coat-of-arm are eligible for copyright protection (depending upon their age and complexity). This means that if you were to create an original emblazon of a coat of arms based entirely on its blazon, then you might be able to upload that as your "own work" to Wikimedia Commons. This is what some users do when they want to use a non-free COA in an table like you seem to want to do. You might be able to find someone to help you create a version OK to use in that table at Wikipedia:WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:01, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If this is a shared IP address, and you did not make the edits referred to above, consider creating an account for yourself or logging in with an existing account so that you can avoid further irrelevant notices.

Thanks for maps

[edit]

Thanks for taking the time to add the settlement maps for Scottish councils. Can I just ask if you are planning to to one for South Lanarkshire? If not, I wouldn't mind giving it a go since I could adapt your parameters (otherwise I wouldn't know where to start) but if its on your 'to do' list for some point I'll just leave you to it! Cheers, Crowsus (talk) 10:29, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please go ahead and add a map for South Lanarkshire. I hope the maps will be helpful, any improvements are welcome. 185.107.14.2 (talk) 14:39, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks also for adding the map to Edinburgh, I moved it into the pushpin map but didn't know how to change the map type, so thanks for updating it. Someone did remove the map at one point, but hopefully now it will stay. Polyamorph (talk) 20:05, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for re-adding the map - time will tell if it will stay. On a side note, it appears that a number of European capitals currently have two simultaneously visible maps in their infoboxes, as my initial edit suggested. These are: Amsterdam, Andorra la Vella, Cardiff, City of San Marino, Helsinki, Kyiv, Mariehamn, Minsk, Prague, Reykjavík, Rome, Tbilisi, Vilnius and Zagreb. 185.107.14.2 (talk) 22:24, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Birsay

[edit]

Can you provide some evidence of its status as a village? Also, while I am here, it's not clear to me why you think it is better to delete the settlements on the existing template and create a new one. Happy to dicuss. Ben MacDui 14:44, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for reaching out - not having expert knowledge of Orkney, I have searched for the terms "birsay village" and "village of birsay". Birsay is mentioned as a village e.g. here: [1], [2] and in books: [3], earliest entry seems to be in 1819: [4].
Regarding the existing template with settlements, a disadvantage with adding, in this case, additional settlements is reduced readability when the template grows. Consider for instance Angus templates: Template:Angus, Scotland towns and villages, Template:Angus elections and Template:Wards of Angus - these could be combined into one monolithic template, along with other Angus related templates - and the resulting template would become huge. Second, some articles may only need one of the templates, which multiple focused templates can better accommodate. 185.107.14.2 (talk) 21:44, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Birsay. The area around the Earl's Palace is a hamlet. It may well have been called 'village' from time to time - two of your links are historical - but I can't see any real evidence of it being a village in the modern sense. It's difficult with these very small settelemnts and I will look around when I get a chance.
New template. I take the point you are making. I don't think this was that much of a problem with the existing one but neither do I have a strong objection. It would however have been polite to make a suggestion at Template talk:Orkney Islands rather than just removing stuff. But then you could also arge that WP:BOLD applies. I think the Orkney template now looks odd without any reference to settlements and I am minded to add back the two towns. Good luck with your adventures. Ben MacDui 10:50, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
