Data-sort-values

[edit]

Hello 142.126.247.127! "Data sort values don't have all the information... Why put it at all?" As I explained to you before, to one of your many incarnations here, data-sort-values allow sortable tables to properly sort titles in alphabetical order by ignoring common starting words like "A" or "The" at the beginning. For example if you have multiple titles beginning with "The", as is quite common, without a data-sort-value they will all end up clumped together when the titles are sorted (by clicking the "Title" heading at the top of the table column). Ignoring The & A at the beginning of titles is a common filing convention for this very reason, it improves the accessibility of the tables & ease of use.

"Also why do some shows have it and not others?" You only need to add them for titles that start with common words like "The" or "A", data-sort is not needed for other less common words as they don't recur as frequently.

The better question would be, why are you removing sortnames & data-sort-values when they have a function that is desired & recommended by Wikipedia? Removing them adds nothing, it in fact removes functionality from the tables & undoes the work of those that added them. You've yet to give a reason for repeatedly removing them.

I hope this explains things to you & that you please leave sortname & data-sort values intact in future. Take care, LooksGreatInATurtleNeck (talk) 17:54, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello 142.126.247.127!
"Funny how only two shows need data sort values" What are you talking about? All shows in both the Film & TV tables in the Gregory Smith article have data-sort-values. Again, only titles starting with common words need data-sort-values. There's about ten in total between the Film & TV tables.
"...or that information on what shows he directed aren't more important" I don't understand what you mean here either, his directorial table also has the correct data-sort-values applied, to multiple titles starting with "The".
You clearly don't understand what data-sort-values & sortnames are or how they work, which is fine as you don't need to if you don't care. Just makes no sense for you to be deleting them if you don't even know what they are, just leave them be when you make your edits. All it has done is draw negative attention to yourself as a block evader & get you blocked again. If you are interested in understanding them, they are covered here along with the Wiki page about filmographies where data-sort-values are recommended, here. If you had any questions you could have simply asked me when I reached out. Take care, LooksGreatInATurtleNeck (talk) 16:32, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
