Welcome
[edit]Hello, 140barb01, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.
I notice that one of the first articles you created appears to be an article about yourself. This is a common mistake made by new Wikipedians—as this is an encyclopedia, we wouldn't expect to have an article about every contributor. Your user page, however, is a great place to write about yourself, making sure to stay within user page guidelines. Just click your user name at the top of the screen when you are logged in, and edit it normally.
The page you created about yourself may well be deleted from the encyclopedia. If it is deleted and you wish to retrieve its contents, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.
Here are some pages that you might find helpful:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- Contributing to Wikipedia
- Tutorial
- How to edit a page and How to develop articles
- How to create your first article (using the Article Wizard if you wish)
- Simplified Manual of Style
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{help me}}
before the question. Again, welcome! Tom (LT) (talk) 21:58, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks greatly for your efforts to improve Wikipedia. We try to remain neutral here, one of our "five pillars". I notice that you are making an extensive amount of edits to the articles Yann Martel and his wife Alice Kuipers. I can only assume you are one of those two, or else a family member or close friend. Whilst it's wonderful that you are expanding Wikipedia, it's hard to write a neutral article if you are involved. You can read "WP:AUTO" for more information about why we discourage that.
That said, I wish you well on your other wiki voyages, and please let me know if there's anything I can do to help. --Tom (LT) (talk) 22:02, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
140barb01 (talk) 22:02, 6 April 2016 (UTC) Hi Tom (LT910001), nope and nope, just a fan of Canadian lit as we don't actually have that many famous writers, only 10 or 15 really good ones. but if I am writing in a biased way or not documenting enough, I can try to find more ftnotes. I was kind of done on this one and was going to look at the Clipper Round the World article next. If I'm not doing it right, I guess I'll look at more wiki guides first. I find ti quite hard to understand a lot of the code and the wiki culture here. There seems to be a lot everyone else knows, but is opaque to a non-insider. I was feeling really good that you wrote my work looked high quality on another edit-type page. I clicked every hyperlink I could see there and couldn't find the one to reply to you on or I would have (as you asked me to reply there). Hopefully answering here isn't wrong. Feeling a bit discouraged, but will try to study more. B (140barb01 (talk) 22:02, 6 April 2016 (UTC))
- Don't feel too discouraged! Wikipedia has it's own culture and editing style and takes a while to get used to. You can, by focusing on a small subset of articles like you're doing, make a big difference to interested readers. The fact that you're making a difference on the world's biggest encyclopedia to many readers is, I think, what keeps most of us going. I'd say take it easy, start by making small edits and scaling up - there's no rush or deadline and no need to do everything at once. The current article's you've written seem to be of high quality. However for the "good article" review (what's a good article? see here good articles on Wikipedia) there was definitely something fishy going on - the other editor hadn't even edited the article and I think now has been blocked. Thanks for joining us, please don't feel discouraged and let me know if there's anything else I can do to help :). --Tom (LT) (talk) 01:07, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
