Saw Mill River picture

Re this edit you meant "closer to its mouth", I suspect? Yes, we can certainly use that picture elsewhere on the page at some point in the future. However, it's an unrepresentative image. Most of the river does not look like that.

In the past, I have preferred (and tried) to photograph watercourses at some point roughly midway along their length for the lead image, where I've been the one taking it—see Dwaar Kill (Wallkill River), Otter Kill, Quassaick Creek, Shawangunk Kill. Wallkill River (where it helps that I live about a half-mile away from that spot). There are exceptions—the spot where I took Moodna Creek from is closer to its mouth but looks more dramatic (and ditto with Fishkill Creek) especially post-Irene, Neversink River was actually the easiest spot to get to from where I live, and Esopus Creek is a nice representative image of what is called informally the upper big Esopus (as in, above the Shandaken Tunnel's outflow).

I also like for those images to be sort of wild-looking (as you may have noticed), since after all rivers are natural features. This would be especially pertinent with the Saw Mill, since it has such a rustic-sounding name, and showing it flowing through a parking lot under a hazy shade of winter is sort of a letdown. That picture is also looking downstream, which always gives you a far less interesting picture than looking upstream (as all the above-linked photos do) does. I did mean closer to its mouth. Your above reasoning is solid, just, as a photographer, I like the composition and crispness of the old one, as well as that it's in context. People who recognize the Yonkers train station will know where the photo was taken, and people who don't can do some searching and easily find it. The new photo could very well have been taken at any creek in the whole Northeast. We should plan to include it somewhere else in the article; it also helps to show people how wide the river actually gets (from the current photos, it very well looks like nothing more than a tiny stream).--ɱ (talk) 18:56, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

I'm thinking of getting down there at some point and taking one from the middle of a bridge if it's a nice day like this one. Maybe even tomorrow. As to your reasoning, I understand—but that could be said about so many of our other river articles, including some on small Northeastern rivers (White Deer Hole Creek, Plunketts Creek (Loyalsock Creek) and Larrys Creek, all of which have been developed to FA status).

I realize there is one infobox image of a river I took that breaks the mold—Suzhou Creek, which I photographed just above its mouth—but it's a major exception that proves the rule: I was in China, so it was kind of hard to drive up the river looking for good photographs, and besides it's a developed watershed all the way back to the city it gets its name from in any event, to the point that it's allegedly the most polluted waterway in that country. The white banners photographed in the old image also tell you right where it was taken. Also, Daniel and User:PointsofNoReturn, don't you think the first heading under "History" should be "Prehistory"? Prehistory describes events that happened before history was recorded there. And usually for historical articles and sections, we like to have sections named for a specific era or period (1800s, Progressive Era, 20th century...), while "Native Americans" is vague. That's especially true for foreigners who may not be informed that natives all moved out or were pushed out long ago.--ɱ (talk) 19:02, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

If you want to make an image without obvious context verifiable, just include the coordinates it was taken from in the location template at Commons on the image page. If the camera itself doesn't record it as metadata. Daniel Case (talk) 19:08, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

I'm not talking about actual verifiability, I just prefer, especially for Wikipedia images, for there to be indicators of where the photograph is taken. I don't know how better to explain it, because that sounds a bit weak, but I suppose it helps to have recognizable places and objects in a photograph to guide the viewer.--ɱ (talk) 19:23, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

I prefer the title Native Americans because Native American history is not pre-history. Perhaps the title could be Ntive American history, but it should not be pre-history. With respect to the new photo, I uploaded that one to be used in the river course about when the river goes through Ardsley. The old picture is a good picture because it illustrates the river when it goes through Yonkers. My question is this: Is the most significant fact about the river that the river is altered in Yonkers, or is it more important to show the river in its natural state? I am okay with using the new picture then. I also feel that pre-history has the connotation of indigenous people crossing the Bering Straight land bridge, not of the natives explorers encountered when they found America. I am okay with using the term Native American History. History of the World does not list Native Americans as being pre-history, but rather pre-Columbian. An example is the Aztecs. Well, regardless of technicalities, pre-Columbian also gives the same meaning. I'm now recalling, that was the terminology I initially used in my Briarcliff draft, and a GOCE member and admin preferred 'prehistory'. Still, the term 'Native American' shouldn't be used, especially because some areas of the US and even New York still have natives (see Oneida Indian Nation, among others). So either "Pre-Columbian era" or "Prehistory" should be more accurate.--ɱ (talk) 01:22, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

I see what the issue is here. The way I have usually handled this is to make "prehistory" a subsection of the history section, sometimes with an end date. This basically limits the meaning of "prehistory" to "times in the past when exact years under the Western calendar are not known and are unlikely to ever be.") Did you notice

Your recent comment against a disruptive editor earlier today on the Wikipedia page seems to be part of his/her extended vandalism to the Wikipedia page over the last 6 weeks. The same user apparently had the objective of spurring someone else to initiate the delisting of Wikipedia from GA status by a pattern of removing cites from the Page and then marking the Page with citation request templates. This was done before I could complete the investigation with admin:GFoley4 who felt it was more properly referred to as direct Vandalism. My report and diffs for this are on Talk:GFoley4 who has been on Wikibreak since last week. Prior to that, I reported the matter to admin:Eustress with a long list of diffs, and Eustress seemed to feel it looked like an ANI issue against the same disruptive editor (the prelim report is on Talk:Eustress under my name). ɱ (talk), From last night, I noticed that about one hour after your fair warning to that editor to stop disruptive editing, that he/she resumed the pattern of further deleting citations and text from the article, and then tagging the article as uncited. This process seems to have been on a "slow-boil" incremental approach used by that editor over 6 weeks to having the article delisted. I imagine that the choice has come down to whether to allow that editor to continue with his/her clever "slow-boil" delisting of the article. You might try to reason further with that editor to stop inserting superfluous tags as you tried to do yesterday. State names in settlement infoboxes

Daniel: Upon further review, it appears that nearly every Westchester municipality has "xxx, New York" in its infobox. I think all the other ones should be edited to use only the settlement's name. For every settlement where I've used that in New York (Walden, Newburgh) and out of state (Aspen, Colorado), I've always used only the settlement's name. Daniel Case (talk) 23:35, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Absolutely no offense meant, but just because you've always done it that way doesn't mean it's necessarily the right way. I'd rather stick with Wikiproject Cities' US Guideline (link), which indicates the 'city, state' use. Saw Mill River

@PointsofNoReturn: Here's a good example: Briarcliff Manor is a a small municipality, but that didn't stop its 151kb article from becoming Featured. Also, people judge article size by 'readable prose size', meaning the Briarcliff article is really 57kb and the Saw Mill River article is only 38kb. Well, a shot of the cemetery's bridge and its mouth and source(s) are just a few others worth taking that aren't available free. Daniel Case said he'll want to do some of that this spring when the foliage is better, unless there's still some good autumn foliage there now. Temperatures Rising

Hi. Thank you so much for your support of the Temperatures Rising article and coming to my "defense" against the opposition by Nikkimaria and Graham Beards. I'm quite annoyed by them because their criticism (in my opinion) is done in such a condescending manner and only makes vague references to what needs to be corrected (i.e. "it needs copy-editing"). Your comments are much more supportive and constructive and for that I am extremely grateful. I may not get the article to FA status but I've done my best. Thanks again for the help. Once more, thanks for your support. Just recently I was able to upgrade the Temperatures Rising article by adding some new information. Take a look if you have a chance. BTW, one of the main reasons that I like this series so much is because one of its star, the very pretty and charming Nancy Fox, was a "dream-girl" for me way back then. Although I've never met her I have corresponded with her over the past three years. She seems to be just as charming in real life as she was on television. I've also seen some recent pictures of her. In my opinion, the funniest episode of Temperatures Rising, at least among the ones that I have on DVD (from a private source), is "Ellen's Flip Side", the fourth in broadcast order and the one where Cleavon Little accidently hypnotizes Nancy Fox. Both give performances that I think should have won them Emmy nominations. I doubt that Nancy will ever see all this but even if she did there's nothing to worry about. Like I said, I've corresponded with her over the last three years and she seems to be a very charming lady. (Said correspondence has been largely by email exchanges but we had a lengthy phone conversation last January.) I've told her that I think she's very pretty and adorable and that I had a big crush on her back when Temperatures Rising originally aired. I've also assured her that having a crush on her is just a memory now (albeit a very pleasant one) and that what I now feel is admiration for a very lovely and talented actress. Whenever I write to her I always extend my best wishes to her as well as her husband and their two daughters. (Plus I've assured her that I don't have any hopeless romantic interest in her — I may be a devoted fan but I'm certainly not a demented one!) I've helped her document her career (modest though it was) and she has expressed her gratitude to me. Also, as I said before, she's aged quite well and is still a very attractive lady. I did look over the changes, and there's so many that I'd have to spend quite a bit of time dissecting what was added and what was removed. Overall I feel that the text leans very strongly on this one man Jay Bhatt, who may be the chief executive now, but I don't think so much should be attributed to him in such a large company. You may think otherwise, and you've done a lot more research on the topic than I have; it just appears too heavily focused on him from my initial views. Feel free to ask others of course, but if nobody steps up, I will. And thanks so much for the food photography compliments, I started out as a real amateur only a few years ago, and now that's one of my biggest passions. Hi Ɱ, sorry for the delay in reply, I've been thinking about how to help show the changes that I'm proposing. What I've done is to put the current live version of the History into my user space and then add my draft, so that you can use the diff to compare the two. Including the Mergers and acquisitions section as well made for a confusing diff, so I added that separately. Here's the full draft in my user space, and here's the diff between the live version and my draft History section. Does that help? Also, I understand your point about the emphasis on Jay Bhatt. @Oleg Alexandrov: Having lived there and in Westchester County, New York, I can tell you that both are very beautiful places, but you don't see Westchester's (or any other county article) full of useless nature shots. These articles should only use photographs that are relevant to the specific topic being discussed. As well, there are hundreds of wineries in Napa County; therefore it is very bad to showcase some and not others. For that reason, individual wineries should not be pictured or mentioned so specifically.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 06:39, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

Fair enough. I believe my recent edits satisfy your objections. There is a picture of Mount Saint Helena where the mountain is mentioned, a picture of the hills where geography is talked about, and a picture of the barrels where wine is talked about. Please note that there are indeed pictures of some specific wineries, but they were added before me, and they are in the relevant section on wineries. Temperatures Rising … again

Thanks a million for your FAC support of Temperatures Rising. Unfortunately a consensus was not reached and the article was not promoted. Although it had your support along with three others there were two reviewers who opposed the article. I addressed all the concerns of one of them (Nikkirama) but he (or she) never acknowledged this. The other opposition came from Graham Beards, who complained about the article not having a production section. Alas I cannot add this section at present time as I have no valid sources of information about the modus operandi of the series. Temperatures Rising is not available on DVD so there are no audio commentaries or "behind-the-scenes" extras, nor are there any books or websites devoted to it. Graham Beards also kept harping about the prose being "unprofessional" and "not engaging" even though I had a copy-editor plus two published authors look over the text. Beards was at times rather vague about what he thought was wrong with the article. Maybe I'm over-reacting but I found much of his criticism to be done in a seemingly smug and condescending manner. At current time I will leave the article as it is but in the near future I will post it as a good article candidate. Again thanks for your FAC support. Jimknut (talk) 00:48, 29 November 2014 (UTC)

@Captain of Team SF: It's tough to search for real people, as many people will not use their name and instead go by an alias (like me). I'd really suggest asking them. Instead, you could search for their full name on the search bar at the very top right of this page. That search may just search Wikipedia's articles; once you search, you may have to switch by clicking "Everything" to search the whole site.
