WikiCup 2013 January newsletter

Signups are now closed; we have our final 127 contestants for this year's competition. 64 contestants will make it to the next round at the end of February, but we're already seeing strong scoring compared to previous years. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) currently leads, with 358 points. At this stage in 2012, the leader (Irish Citizen Army Grapple X (submissions)) had 342 points, while in 2011, the leader had 228 points. We also have a large number of scorers when compared with this stage in previous years. Florida 12george1 (submissions) was the first competitor to score this year, as he was last year, with a detailed good article review. Some other firsts:

Featured articles, portals and topics, as well as good topics, are yet to feature in the competition.

This year, the bonus points system has been reworked, with bonus points on offer for old articles prepared for did you know, and "multiplier" points reworked to become more linear. For details, please see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There have been some teething problems as the bot has worked its way around the new system, but issues should mostly be ironed out- please report any problems to the WikiCup talk page. Here are some participants worthy of note with regards to the bonus points:

  • United States Ed! (submissions) was the first to score bonus points, with Portland-class cruiser, a good article.
  • Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) has the highest overall bonus points, as well as the highest scoring article, thanks to his work on Enrico Fermi, now a good article. The biography of such a significant figure to the history of science warrants nearly five times the normal score.
  • Chicago HueSatLum (submissions) claimed bonus points for René Vautier and Nicolas de Fer, articles that did not exist on the English Wikipedia at the start of the year; a first for the WikiCup. The articles were eligible for bonus points because of fact they were both covered on a number of other Wikipedias.

Also, a quick mention of British Empire The C of E (submissions), who may well have already written the oddest article of the WikiCup this year: did you know that the Fucking mayor objected to Fucking Hell on the grounds that there was no Fucking brewery? The gauntlet has been thrown down; can anyone beat it?

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Your recent Question for help in #Helpers

On 2 Feb you said: SigmaWP: bash: ./port.py: /usr/bin/python^M: bad interpreter: No such file or directory

This is because you have windows line endings in your script To remove the ^M characters at the end of all lines in vi, use: :%s/^V^M//g Hybirdd (talk) 23:52, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. Σσς(Sigma) 01:41, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Wikimedia labs

Why did you create this page? And do you know how to get rid of it? Ryan Vesey 02:42, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Please do not do this again - other WMF wikis are not dump spaces for articles that we don't want. --Rschen7754 03:00, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
Maybe I'm missing something, but wasn't that wiki closed last January? Legoktm (talk) 03:04, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
Hm, that's strange. I don't remember having ever edited that wiki. As for removing the article, I'm afraid I can't help you here. You'll get a better answer if you ask a steward.
And according to the timestamp, that page was made well over a year ago. I know this now. Σσς(Sigma) 03:09, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
Σ was the one who nominated the article for deletion on enwiki, maybe it somehow got imported to the other wiki and he showed up as having edited it. Soap 03:59, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

templates

thanks for adding. Dlohcierekim 03:13, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

On mac option+w makes the ∑ symbol. Just letting you kno so you can add it to the Σ/TI page. Thanks! ―Rosscoolguy 21:15, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Actually, that isn't a sigma. See Talk:∑ for a small discussion on it. Σσς(Sigma) 00:29, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Unnecessary addition of pp-template

Hi, this edit was not necessary. The template has {{documentation}}, which handles the {{pp-template}} automatically; it's coded into lines 7-15 of Template:Documentation. On a related note, the template already had a <noinclude>...</noinclude>, so if the {{pp-template}} had been necessary, it should have gone inside that rather than adding a second <noinclude>...</noinclude>. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:36, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

I reviewed the code and it should have skipped that page, but it happens again, let me know. Σσς(Sigma) 04:41, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
I can give several examples from the previous few days, but none since the Template:Sclass- one. Of the six most recent edits to templates, I have made three amendments and two straight reverts: the only one of the six which I didn't touch had already been amended by Frietjes. --Redrose64 (talk) 11:03, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll see if I can correct the mistakes by the end of the week. Σσς(Sigma) 22:19, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

My brain

When I see you on some page, my brain sounds you out as "E". Does this happen to you? --i \T/A\C 03:26, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Please take a look at this article

I reviewed your vast experience and wanted to contact you about helping to resolve a dispute. I'm being teamed up against by a group of self-avowed libertarians. I don't care that they are libertarians except for the fact they are using their ideology to skew the Koch Industries article. When I post positive things about Koch, they don't blink an eye, but if I dare put up anything critical, it gets deleted and frowned upon without balance. I'm trying to round up some disinterested third party input so I'm not getting steamrolled by biased editors. My goal is to make the article more informative and encyclopedic and that's it. Here's the current critical part of the Talk Page. Thank you. Cowicide (talk) 20:50, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Interesting. I think Koch has lots of factual and noteworthy information that's ignored because of the lack of 'good information' to balance it. They could easily earn their own controversy article due to their right wing influence and left wing reaction. Σσς(Sigma) 23:43, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

I have unreviewed a page you curated

Hi, I'm Way2veers. I wanted to let you know that I saw the page you reviewed, Shemar henry, and have un-reviewed it again. If you have any questions, please ask them on my talk page. Thank you. Way2veers 03:02, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
