There were reasons why the article was made a redirect before, and those reasons still apply now. First and foremost, the article violates WP:GAMEGUIDE and WP:GAMECRUFT, not to mention it lacked any reliable and verifiable sources. NZ is a mode, not a separate game, so anything of importance about it should be in the Call of Duty: World at War article. Then there is the notability issue, which likewise discourages allowing NZ as a separate article. Reading through what was there, it was nothing more than original research and fan-collected material (description of how the NZ level resembled another multiplayer level, lists of playable weapons, etc.). The section on NZ in the CoD:WaW article can be expanded with some of what was there, but Wikipedia isn't the Call of Duty Wiki or a general game guide. -- <span style="font-family:Corbel"><span style="color:DarkSlateGray"><b>Commdor </b></span><span style="color:Navy">{<small><b><i>Talk</i></b></small>}</span></span> 19:39, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

:::Lol dude to be a sysop you've got to be into vandalism and reverting vandals, page deletions, licking sysops' asses etc. I'm more into improving the encyclopedia the good old fashioned way by writing and uploading pics. So, as you can see, by giving me such tools to block people and delete pages, it would be of no use to the encyclopedia as I'd rarely use it. Not to mention that some assholes would probably oppose me for being too unpexperienced etc... and if I'm really unlucky, you-know-what may pop-up in the conversation and could even threat my current status. It was unused except for a case of vandalism I had to clean up, so I deleted it (I didn't note the recent usage). It's also unfree. This isn't about censorship, don't worry. :I'm just opposed to the usage of fair-use images in cases like this; however, hiding the image upon page load is a bit perplexing. That's not outright censorship, but that shouldn't happen (consider, for example, what would happen if we coded Wikipedia to highlight all usages of "fuck" in black, so that they'd only be visible if selected). In relation to the image deletion, I didn't know it was recently used on Goatse; rather, as I mentioned, it had only been used for vandalism. And, as it was unfree, I felt it justified to sidestep the seven-day wait and just delete it. Apologies to you guys for disrupting your consensus-gathering. ::In this case, I'm not quite sure this is being handled in the best way. If people really want an image there, then it shouldn't be hidden; that's censoring, which overrides local consensus. However, I also don't think the image is completely necessary. It isn't because I'm offended by it, but it doesn't provide much encyclopedic information. That second point is personal opinion, so you don't have to take it into account; please consider the first point, though. The templete for the latest nomination for History of Ku Klux Klan in New Jersey showed you as the nominator. As I was attempting to verify the hook and promote your ALT1, It showed an edit conflict with you approving the hook. I would just suggest refraining from verifing a hook in which you nominated. This just give the opportunity for a second set of eyes. Also wanted to stop by and thank you for your help over at DYK. Hi Jolly Janner!

Following a speedy deletion request, I deleted "Anglocunt" under criterion G10, as a page seemingly serving no other purpose than to disparage some entity. If you can provide a reasonable explanation of why it is a plausible redirect, I will restore and probably list it at RfD instead. :No, I support its deletion. I cannot find many uses of the word outside a small minority on the Internet, so I do not think it is a common enough word for it to serve any purposes as a redirect. DYK

Thanks for jumping in and helping with DYK nominations! As Hassocks said, you don't need to be an admin to--Musiceditor123 (talk) 18:37, 20 June 2010 (UTC) review hooks, anyone can review hooks and anyone can move hooks to Next update (you have to be an admin to move hooks from Next to the official queue, but just because the official queue is protected indefinitely). I started working at DYK just about a month ago, in pretty much the same way as you; I found out about DYK and nominated one of my articles, and got frustrated about the amount of time it was taking anyone to review it so I started reviewing all the ones that were ahead of it in line. There are a lot of rules to keep in mind, but you learn pretty quickly by doing, and I would guess that at least half of the most active DYK reviewers right now have started at around the same time as me or even more recently (Orlady, How do you turn this on, Davidwr, and some others), so it doesn't take long at all to get the hang of things and to become a big part of DYK.[reply]

You'll get used to things quickly, but just for a quick intro if you haven't figured this out already, with each no you generally just need to check the length of the hook (less than 200 characters), the length or expansion of the article (at least 1500 characters readable text, and expanded 5x if it's not a new article), the date of creation/expansion (within the past 5 days), whether there's an inline citation for the fact in the hook, and general goodness/badness of the article (there aren't a lot of specific rules on that, but if an article just sucks for some reason you can mention it at the DYK page and say you won't pass it until it gets cleaned up). I like to use this JavaScript to count hook lengths (although after you do a couple hundred of them you can pretty much eyeball whether or not they're too long), and this tool for counting article length.

Thanks again for helping out, and let me or someone else at DYK know if you have any questions! —Politizer talk/contribs 01:11, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for your warm and hearty welcome. I have a link to an online character counter on my user page, which might be the one you mentioned above. The problem with one of my reviews is that the nominator measured it by words, which was a five-fold expansion. However, when I checked the character, it was just several out. I gave it a silver/white/grey tick. Now I shall go see if anyone's commented on my nominations... Jolly Janner (talk) 16:23, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DYK Emerson Rodwell

I reduced the character count in this DYK nom by turning 'Tasmanian Tigers' into 'Tasmanian' which should take it below 200. Robert Fleming (talk) 10:14, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for File:Plymouth Marine Laboratory logo.png

Thanks for uploading File:Plymouth Marine Laboratory logo.png. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Move protection

Because we have a long history with the vandal that does these page moves. Unless the pages are moveprotected, he returns to them over and over again. He has proven this pattern of behavior enough times that I don't think we need to wait for him to move every page twice. Also, these targets are invariably well-established articles where a change of the article title would be exceedingly unlikely -- Utopia is a good example. Orphaned non-free media (File:Flag of Leicester.png)

Thanks for uploading File:Flag of Leicester.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Nominator's rationale: Rename. More accurate name, and consistent with other "civil parishes in" categories. "Parish" has different meanings in different localities. All categories should be clear if they contain civil (or geographical) parishes or church parishes. Note that this discussion of the same question (closed to divide the question) resulted in 5 Support rename votes, 1 Oppose vote, and 2 that abstained on most categories. I have looked at much more than these pages listed and the categories do all reflect civil parishes.--Carlaude (talk) 03:00, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Zombies

-- Commdor {Talk} 19:39, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, thanks. The article's not supposed to get too detailed, so it's better to tell the storyline, rather than individual events that happen several times in the game e.g. killing soldiers, clearing out MG bunkers etc, as well as the weapons included. Topsham Town

According to the Topsham Town web site Topsham is a town? http://www.topsham.org/ Do you have a reference that says otherwise?

Devon County Council website says it's part of Exeter local authority, which is a city. You can't have a town within a city. Jolly Ω Janner 22:47, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well... what you say may well be true, I don't know but the reference doesn't actually say that Topsham isn't a town does it? That is merely your interpretation. I lived there for many years and it was always considered a town and it's own web site calls it a town. TeapotgeorgeTalk 23:50, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not expert. If you would like to get further information you could ask at WP:UKGEO. Jolly Ω Janner 23:57, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think "town" has a technical definition in English local government. The title of "city" is jealously guarded of course, and there are terms like "borough" that only have a technical meaning, or "district" that have both a technical and a more general meaning. But so far as I know "town" has never been an official title, so if anywhere likes to describe itself as a town, and can persuade other people to do so, it probably can (I believe the situation is different in the US, at least in some states). Topsham certainly does come into this category; the local attitude could be summed up as "Fog at Countess Wear - Exeter isolated". seglea (talk) 20:25, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Er, see the discussion in our excellent Town page, which says roughly what I've said above but makes it all much clearer. Very useful source, Wikipedia, I must remember to look things up in it... seglea (talk) 20:32, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
True enough, both in the general and the specific. It might be quite hard to source the fact that "town" has no formal definition, though; it smacks of proving a negative. seglea (talk) 01:10, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use Image:St George Wharf Tower, artist's rendition.jpg

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:St George Wharf Tower, artist's rendition.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stifle (talk) 12:14, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, please excuse any problems I might have caused in regards to that user on the article about February snowfall in the UK by asking whether or not 10 inches of snowfall in itself is notable. I have no clue what a "Muhammad" is or is supposed to mean. I wonder if it is meant as a personal attack on me. Spinach Monster (talk) 22:36, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well I don't know either; that's why I asked him. At first I didn't think that he was calling the user Muhamad, rather that I thought it was some kind of noun refering to a tactic of trolling etc. Jolly Ω Janner 22:42, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The pictures take up too much space. I don't think you need a massive table for everyone who voted. Surely there must be another way or just not have it at all. I don't think each area needs their own section e.g. secretary for energy. Jolly Ω Janner 16:22, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I noticed that you put a speedy deletion tag on Drake circus (lowercase c). Why did you tag it for Speedy Deletion? The redirect is acceptable per Wikipedia:Redirects#Spellings, misspellings, tenses and capitalisations. And it just could be redirected to to the Drake Circus disambiguation page. Thanks for your time.(please reply here)67.162.250.53 (talk) 06:14, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm concerned that it might be edited i.e. changed to redirecting to something else or someone might start developing their own article on it. We don't need it as Wikipedia's software mean that you don't need capital letters. For example, type (or copy and paste) in drake circus shopping centre (all lower-case) and it will take you to Drake Circus Shopping Centre without any redirects necessary. Jolly Ω Janner 11:38, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

See also

Hi. I saw where you reverted my additions to the see also section. My understanding of see also sections is that they exist in order to direct interested readers to areas that tangently related. Do you think you could restore my additions, or explain why you feel they are inappropriate, if that is the case? Thanks.Die4Dixie (talk) 22:11, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The snowfall isn't connected to global warming etc. Global warming can't affect the weather just general trends in temperature. By having those links in the see also section Wikipedia is insinuating that global warming had something to do with the event, which is original research and POV. Project Norfolk & Suffolk

Hi

Thanks for your offer of help.

I need you to understand that my aim is to learn as much as I can about the processes involved and so as long as you don't mind me asking questions a lot then I would really appreciate your help on this.

I lack knowledge of the way certain tasks are performed in Wikiworld, such as the collection of info from tags, although my training is in systems analysis, so I pick things up (sometimes lol) fairly quickly.

I would like to start by spending a couple of days looking over your Devon page and then get back to you over next two days if thats ok ?

Thanks again--Chaosdruid (talk) 03:52, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. I think that when I made Devon's assessment page I just copy and pastied the one used for WPCITIES and changed the word "cities" to "Devon" for everything. Jolly Ω Janner 12:32, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion

I notice that you tagged the page File:Drake-circus-1.jpg for speedy deletion with the reason "image which has been tagged and the uploader notified for more than 7 days as showing no evidence that the copyright holder has released it under the license indicated by the uploader". While that's a valid reason for speedy deletion in general, this page does not qualify for speedy deletion under that criterion because the image has not been tagged for seven days, and in any case the uploader claims to be the copyright holder and does not need to provide further evidence of that. If you still want the page to be deleted, please consider tagging it with a speedy deletion template which does apply, redirecting it to another page, or using the WP:FFD process. Thanks! Stifle (talk) 13:44, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers. I thought it was a bit odd that it wasn't showing up on my watchlist etc, but I know that deletion logs have a bit of a backlog in the server before they appear. Jolly Ω Janner 15:27, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It has been my personal convention to name files with only an initial capital letter. I am still new to Commons, so if there is a different standard convention I ought to use, I would appreciate your pointing me in the correct direction to read about the issue. Thanks! -- Notyourbroom (talk) 16:20, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There isn't any standard about it. This is the first time I have commented on a quality image candidate. I don't think it's the sort of thing that would make it fails its nomination, but I just wanted to point it out. Jolly Ω Janner 16:26, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

COD WOW plot

Ok, I missed that part of the GA review, but even before I got there, I would have agreed that the plot as it was, even though it mimics the COD4 plot section, was on the repetitive and overly detailed side. Part of it here may be the fact that this is still historically accurate, and thus the three separate characters' missions do not affect each other to any degree, unlike in COD4 where there is a much stronger connection to the story parts and describing it in order makes the story cohesive. For CODWOW, it's convoluted when you present it as such even though they follow the appropriate events in order. But feel free to change it back if you feel it is better that way. --MASEM 21:18, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Dorset

Just a quick note to say thanks for joining WikiProject Dorset. It some ways it's actually very beneficial to have someone not from Dorset, to give an un-biased and very honest viewpoint of Dorset articles. Glad to have you onboard! MasterOfHisOwnDomain (talk) 13:51, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to be aboard! ;) By the way, did you copy and paste the info from WPDevon? Jolly Ω Janner 13:52, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the award, my first! I used WPDevon as a foundation, because they are similar type projects, to set up Dorset quickly and easily. Some odd sections, because of the wording and links I did copy, but as the project grows we will of course differentiate from WPDevon (although it is a very good project). MasterOfHisOwnDomain (talk) 14:25, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I copied most of WPDevon's assessment from WPCITIES I think, along with bits from other places. Jolly Ω Janner 14:49, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Interview, snow

Hi, I've removed your mentioning of the interview and costs involved in preparation for the snow, since it's not associated with the section - the section is about the reaction of the public, not about how badly UK was prepared for the event. Also, I am not sure whether the source was okay. I don't mind putting it somewhere else in the article. I hope you don't mind. Cheers BeŻet (talk) 21:00, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think the name "reaction" is ambiguous then. Surely the Mayor of London's reaction to the incident is notable? Jolly Ω Janner 21:20, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cornish hurling

In view of this "In the city of Grass Valley, the tradition of singing Cornish carols lives on and one local historian of the area says the songs have become "the identity of the town". Some of the members of today's Cornish Carol Choir are in fact descendants of the original Cornish gold miners. The city holds St Piran's Day celebrations every year, which along with carol singing, includes a flag raising ceremony, games involving the Cornish pasty, and Cornish wrestling competitions.[1]" the California Grass Valley seems more likely than Virginia.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 11:13, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Earth Hour 2009 vandalism

Is it possible to ban 71.244.177.21 for constant vandalism to earth hour 2009? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Messiisking (talkcontribs) 23:52, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

IP addresses can't be "banned" (permenant block). 71.244.177.21 might receive a 24-hour block if the address continues to vandalise after being warned about it sufficeintly. I cannot apply the block as I do not have sysop status. Jolly Ω Janner 00:18, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

List of Countries by Unemploment Rate

CIA's world factbook is out of date by a huge margin. Even United States Unemployment rates are given as that of 2008 although the Fed updates it every month. I suggest we use the latest statistical updates by every country's Central Bank rather than relying on another encyclopedia source which is much behind wikipedia. Wikipedia does not need to dependent upon World Factbook for its content. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ankitsingh83 (talkcontribs) 14:24, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you. It will be a large task in updating the list etc, but I think it will be worth it. I have also updated the map as Australia and Hong Kong's unemployment rates have gone over 5%. I will continue to update the map as the article is updated.

Good articles

Teach me how to write GAs? PirateSmackKArrrr! 17:16, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Chose an article that you know some knowledge about or you are passionate about it. This will help you to gather your own information about it. Then add inline citations to like every sentence from reliable sources, excluding all sentences in the lead and maybe the infobox. Then nominate it at WP:GAC. How abt we make Vampire into a GA? PirateSmackKArrrr! 18:00, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Vampie has already been a GA. It's currently a featured article, which is like a level up from GA. After an article is promoted to "FA status", it is no longer classed as a GA, but rather as a FA. It is still none-the-less a "good" article. How about Devon? You ever been there? Jolly Ω Janner 18:07, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

By ED stadards, that's fairly cool. Unforunately it's not from a reliable source, so it is useless in GA criteria. You might also want to use a javascript tool located somewhere in the gadgets for adding references more easily. Jolly Ω Janner 18:39, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lol dude to be a sysop you've got to be into vandalism and reverting vandals, page deletions, licking sysops' asses etc. I'm more into improving the encyclopedia the good old fashioned way by writing and uploading pics. So, as you can see, by giving me such tools to block people and delete pages, it would be of no use to the encyclopedia as I'd rarely use it. Not to mention that some s would probably oppose me for being too unpexperienced etc... and if I'm really unlucky, you-know-what may pop-up in the conversation and could even threat my current status. Ciudad Victoria

It is not as dry as you think it is. Look at some more data. That chart is wrong. It should be replaced.--Brout8 (talk) 23:16, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I realise that the data for the chart isn't very reliable as it's only be studied for a few years, but I couldn't find any other reliable data. What data are you basing your assumptions on? It would be very useful to have this data. Look at Semi-arid climate and you'll see that the examples on that page actualy get more rainfall than Ciudad Victoria. I admit that Ciudad Victoria does have a slight wet/dry season effect and that's why I said it could "possibly" be classed as "subtropical" and a note on occasional hurricanes. I'm very sure that hurricanes do affect Ciudad Victoria every now and then. Jolly Ω Janner 12:56, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct. It is a semi-arid climate. However, it is not because of the amount of rainfall. It is a BWh, and not Aw, only because the winter temperature is 1.5 and 1 respective °C below the treshold for tropical climates in January and December. Otherwise it would easily be an Aw savanna climate. My mistake.
I get my weather data from Forca online. --Brout8 (talk) 01:40, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Map

Sorry, I have removed your map from the AF447 article. The BBC map you cited states clearly that the last transmission was received from an unknown location, whereas your map puts a red dot along the flight path and labels it "Unknown Location". There shouldn't be a dot or any indication of where the flight went down, because there is no citation for that data. Thanks - Tempshill (talk) 22:52, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, another recommendation in case you want to revise it: More data would be communicated if the label stated that the last transmission was received at an unknown location, rather than just having the text "Unknown Location", which I found confusing. Sorry to bother you. Regards - Tempshill (talk) 22:54, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK credits redux

Just FYI, in this update you accidentally listed me for nom credit, but I actually had nothing to do with that article (and the entry at T:TDYK didn't have me listed for credit). It's probably just a mix-up from adding a bunch of articles at once, and it's certainly not a huge deal, just thought I should let you know so you can watch out for similar mistakes in the future. Also, hopefully there wasn't anyone else who was supposed to get nom credit in that update but accidentally got replaced by me. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 17:41, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I understand. Climate chart edit

This edit does not actually change the width of the template. If you can actually provide evidence that the previous version changes the width of the template on purged instances of the template then I will be happy to correct this. If you cannot, then I would suggest that in future you consult editors with more experience of templatespace before reverting in future. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 00:48, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look at the new test cases and see if this is resolved for you. The problem appears to be that the infobox class assigns more padding to the data cells by default; I've corrected the template to match. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 14:32, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No, the "new" versions are still wider and have a grey background (although I'm not too bothered about the grey background, I prefer white) even after purging the page. Sorry, Jolly Ω Janner 14:38, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I can't replicate this observation with either IE or Firefox. The background change was deliberate. Anyway, I'm going to take this to the template talk page, as I see no basis in the rationale that a minor change in the default width (which I can't even reproduce) will have any deleterious effect on existing layout. What inspired me to make the change in the first place was seeing to layout problems that the current version has one articles. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 14:48, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

United Kingdom foreign-born population by country of birth map

Hi. I've spotted a problem with a map you created. On File:United Kingdom foreign born population by country of birth.png, the lowest population category on the key represents groups with fewer than 19,999 members, but the source only gives figures for countries of birth with 21,000 members or more. That means that any country of birth not in the source has a group size of fewer than 21,000, not fewer than 19,999 as the map suggests. Do you think you could fix this?

Also, I thought you might want to know that someone appears to be using your map to promote the BNP on YouTube (see here). I'm not sure if there's any way to stop them from using it, but I wouldn't be too happy myself. Cordless Larry (talk) 12:59, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the notification. I have now fixed the problem on the maps. Also, the BNP are allowed to use my map if they wish, as it's licensed into the public domain. Although I highly doubt that it is the BNP who made that video. I'm not too concerned as the video is just a screenshot and has gained very little interest from YouTube viewers. Jolly Ω Janner 13:20, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks. I agree, it's not the BNP but rather a supporter. Fair enough if you're not bothered though. Cordless Larry (talk) 13:49, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I read that report a bit more and saw that it also had data for people's nationality and not just their country of birth, so I made a couple of maps for that too. Jolly Ω Janner 16:47, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. That could come in handy. Cordless Larry (talk) 18:17, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Goatse

It was unused except for a case of vandalism I had to clean up, so I deleted it (I didn't note the recent usage). It's also unfree. This isn't about censorship, don't worry. If somebody can come up with a good argument for reinstating an unfree image, I'd be happy to undelete it. Cheers, Master of Puppets 16:44, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm just opposed to the usage of fair-use images in cases like this; however, hiding the image upon page load is a bit perplexing. That's not outright censorship, but that shouldn't happen (consider, for example, what would happen if we coded Wikipedia to highlight all usages of " " in black, so that they'd only be visible if selected). Master of Puppets 16:56, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In this case, I'm not quite sure this is being handled in the best way. Master of Puppets 15:14, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that perspective, but the problem is that it can be applied universally. One can never realistically visualize something if they've only read a description. Again, this is a matter of consensus, and it seems that people have already agreed on using an image, so I won't attempt to change that. I'm just hesitant to resurrect the image if it will be used in a censored fashion. Master of Puppets 15:28, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I'll restore it when there aren't people sitting behind me wondering what I'm doing. Master of Puppets 15:48, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Number of hooks in updates

Hi there, JJ, and first of all, thankyou for helping out at DYK!

Just one minor point - standard length of a DYK update ATM is 8 hooks, I notice that you've done a couple with only 7. Please try to stick to the standard length as it helps with project co-ordination and prevents a backlog from forming. Thanks once again for your assistance, Gatoclass (talk) 00:37, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I understand, but the ITN section is rather small at the moment, so on preview there's a bit of gap on the right-hand side. I'll try and get up to eight hooks on this prep. Cheers. Jolly Ω Janner 00:48, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The ITN people will usually make adjustments if there is a gap, but if you start posting 7-hook updates, they may shorten it which means we have the same problem in the opposite direction. Best just to stick to eight hooks per update IMO. Gatoclass (talk) 01:01, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The words "Fighting Squirrels" are quite interesting. When I reviewed your ALT it read "adult cartoon character", so I pressumed that meant adult and not ographic. Had I know this, I'd have to agree with you that it's probably more interesting. Floods

So, you moved the article. Fair enough I suppose. How about expanding it to cover Ireland too, which has also had a fair deluge (see Wikinews). November 2009 United Kingdom and Ireland floods? Mjroots (talk) 20:36, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that. I always forget about Ireland 'cause it's never mentioned on BBC News etc. I've tried to include Ireland. I don't hear much news about Ireland's flooding, so if you could contribute some that would be great. Sadly the Met Office don't mention Ireland either. Jolly Ω Janner 20:50, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Info about Ireland can be found via Portal:Current events, where there are links to various Irish new sources. On another note, having two columns of refs creates a lot of white space with Firefox. I'm seeing two columns of refs, and the top of a third colum links to Commons and Wikinews, but the rest of it is blank. Reverting to one column refs would cure this, otherwise move the Commons and Wikinews to the bottom of the refs. Mjroots (talk) 22:09, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I see. I use IE and it only has one column. I'll try edit in Firefox to get it looking smooth in both browsers. Jolly Ω Janner 22:13, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Flooding

As well as the reasons I posted on the talk page of the article, they are separate land masses. Someone navigating to the article will either be particularly interested in one or the other (Ireland or the United Kingdom), so it makes sense for them to appear as separate sections in the contents. In a sense, I do feel they should be separate articles, but there is not enough to create one, and there likely will never be. If you can provide any reasoning as to why 'chronological ordering makes more sense surely' (sic), then please do. Thanks, Vivara (talk) 22:30, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

'Chronological ordering also affects areas based on their geography. People from Wales and south Britain might look earlier into the article, because there was a seperate storm. People up north might look later on towards the storms that have been flooding this week. It also builds up a patchwork of how the persistant rains cumulated to the flooding point through saturation of the soil'
The contents section clearly indicates the separate storms. We have added separate sections to one part of the '18–21 November' part because I felt it needed separation. Your argument makes little or no sense in real terms. Yes, people interested in the first storm will go to the section about the first storm. The only place affected in a major way was the United Kingdom, so no problems there. And people interested in the second storm will, yes, go the the section about the second storm. Separating it into 'Ireland' and 'Great Britain' does not affect this. In fact, it provides easy access of interest to the user. I also do not see how the separation changes the way the saturation of soil is seen in the article, and feel this is a very minor issue compared to the overall one. If there is a large consensus to revert the separation (and if there is, we will see it due to the feature on the main page), then it will be seen on the talk page. Regards, Ed (Vivara (talk) 22:55, 21 November 2009 (UTC)).[reply]

Invitation to comment

Hi Jolly Janner. I am Cargoking and you probably have seen me around ITN. I have identified you as an ITN regular, so I thought I would inform you of a discussion opened on 5 December 2009.

MSGJ suggested on Arsonal's (who's fairly new to ITN) talk page, that ITN suggestions made on the candidate's page would be put on separate pages, such as Wikipedia:In the news/Candidates/2009-12-05. The past seven days of discussion would be automatically transcluded. "This would avoid the need for archiving and it would also leave the history of the page intact. It might also make it easier to create new days because we can use preload templates, etc." The only disadvantage to this proposal would be that each new comment would not show up on people's watchlists.

You are invited to take part in discussion here.

The user of language makes it seem like a comment you'd find in a forum, where you are merely describing how things happen in China. Please make sure that all comments are directly linked to the construction of the article. Otherwise we'll end up with loads of arguements amongst users and an overly large talk page. Thanks for the message. I've tried to be concise as I could but I really felt there were some glaring ommissions (no mention of the National Aquarium for example). I won't be too upset if you want to edit them further. I'm afraid I didn't see the link to the Plymouth History page. Hi Jolly. Thanks for your question. I've replied on my talk page. Skinsmoke (talk) 16:37, 29 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No probs. As you clearly have an interest in the Plymouth area, you might care to have a look at what I've done to St Budeaux, to see if I've missed anything. There appeared to have been a mangled merge in the past into St. Budeaux, Plymouth, but I could see no reason for a disambiguation (there are no other St Budeauxs (??!?) on Wikipedia) and, of course, Wikipedia UK policy is to spell it St Budeaux, not St. Budeaux. The article could do with a bit of work (a few citations wouldn't go amiss), but I haven't had time to tackle that.
I also added Devonport to the Devon template. As a former county borough and, at one time more important than Plymouth itself, I thought it was worthy of being listed as a major Devon settlement. Skinsmoke (talk) 16:49, 29 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Voting intention graph

Hi, I've just noticed that the United Kingdom general election, 2010 article says that your voting intentions graph is from Ipsos MORI's data, but it looks like it's a collection of data from all pollsters: ComRes' rogue poll from May 2009 sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm not sure quite how legitimate it is to do this, as a good deal of the variations will be from differences in polling methodology, rather than any legitimate changes in opinion. It is a nice graph, though; might I suggest that you either choose one pollster and stick to it, or use a moving average to smooth out the discrepancies? —Wereon (talk) 00:11, 10 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Following a speedy deletion request, I deleted "Anglo " under criterion G10, as a page seemingly serving no other purpose than to disparage some entity. If you can provide a reasonable explanation of why it is a plausible redirect, I will restore and probably list it at RfD instead. Regards, decltype (talk) 09:58, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, I support its deletion. I cannot find many uses of the word outside a small minority on the Internet, so I do not think it is a common enough word for it to serve any purposes as a redirect. I have no idea why I created it in the first place. Jolly Ω Janner 11:10, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks for the clarification! Regards, decltype (talk) 11:38, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of my name / Deletion log for Google

Hi Jolly Janner. My page was deleted several times upon my request yet my name still appears and is thus listed in the Google index. I would like my name and the deletion log to be fully suppressed at that point in order that no information appears anymore on Wikipedia and Google. Please provide me with with advice or help me contact the appropriate Wikipedia person if you cannot do anything, it has been months that my name appears on Wikipedia and Google and I do not know what to do. I have sent removal request to Google already and they deny them saying that my name was kept on Wikipedia and therefore cannot be removed. Thank you very much for your assistance, regards. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Academic2005 (talkcontribs) 10:00, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox winter listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Infobox winter. Since you had some involvement with the Infobox winter redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion (if you have not already done so).  Glenfarclas  (talk) 20:17, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agree; will hurry things up by speedying it via user request ;) Jolly Ω Janner 21:36, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OHI

How are things dude? I'd add some lulz to your userpage but its protected. I've long been considering buying a camera, which one do you use for your commons uploads? --MudkipsLieker (talk) 20:48, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm good thank you. I'm sorry for my user page being locked; feel free to add some lulz to my talk page or to your own user page. I use a FujiFilm FinePix J15fd. Quite cheap and very good for the cost of it. Just tried out a new Olympus today and it was quite dissapointing to be honest; colours were terrible and it can't focus for shit. If you're loaded then go for a DSLR. Jolly Ω Janner 21:39, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free files in your user space

Hey there Jolly Janner, thank you for your contributions. I am a bot, alerting you that non-free files are not allowed in user or talk space. I removed some files I found on User talk:Jolly Janner. In the future, please refrain from adding fair-use files to your user-space drafts or your talk page.

Removal

Hi. The edits were from one of several copycat accounts of a longtime hard-banned user, User:JarlaxleArtemis. Some time ago, this user created a new persona named "Grawp" after the Harry Potter character and has posted instructions on how to disrupt this site at Encyclopedia Dramatica. These don't pop up often anymore, but when they do, the edit summaries are full of insults toward admins who have come up against these attack in the past. the attack against me referred to my long-ago username, since abandoned per my own choice in good standing. Somehow, these kids feel that calling me by that username is an insult when it clearly is not. A CU just turned up about seven more socks from the same user, all with the same taunts and insults. As such, I feel it's warranted to block the insults and not feed this troll and others who will certainly come here to gloat. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 15:30, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WP Northamptonshire

Hi Jolly just to let you know some Northamptonshire articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release (which I never herd of until today). It can be seen here. It just advises to make some Northants articles better and I'm currently working on Northamptonshire which is coming along nicely, but help would be appreciated, best Likelife (talk) 16:06, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:Old St Cuthbert's Church, Oborne

Thanks for spotting my error on Talk:Old St Cuthbert's Church, Oborne. I've been working my way through the list at Churches Conservation Trust & I've finished Devon & moved on to Dorset but hadn't updated my tagging.— Rod talk 15:35, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Poll/discussion

Perhaps the poll and discussion sections will be easier to discern now that I added headings to both. Could you move your last comment into the discussion, please? Thanks. --Born2cycle (talk) 21:58, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm typing another comment at the moment. I give you permission to move it for me. Jolly Ω Janner 22:00, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Prod of Drake circus contested

I have removed the prod tag from Drake circus, which you proposed for deletion, because the page you proposed for deletion was not an article. If you still think the page should be deleted, please don't add the prod template back to it, as proposed deletion is only for articles. Instead, consider using WP:RFD for this page. In some cases, a speedy deletion criterion may apply. Thanks! Armbrust Talk Contribs 14:57, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bloody hell. This is my third attempt at getting this redirect deleted (following a request on an admin's talk page and a speedy delete) for something that is merely a technical deletion. Jolly Ω Janner 16:03, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Would you like to meet Jimmy Wales in Bristol 13th Jan 2011?

As you may have heard Jimmy Wales is coming to give a talk at the Victoria Rooms in Bristol on 13th January 2011 as part of wikipedia's 10th birthday celebrations. There is a possibility of a small group of local active wikipedians to meet him for 20 mins before the talk. If you are interested could you respond on the centralised discussion on the Bristol wikiproject talk page?— Rod talk 20:23, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

 • There will be lots of cameras & the latest plan is for local active wikipedians to be involved in the meet & greets + press interviews 09.30-11.30 at the Watershed. The main talk (audience 650+ @ Victoria Rooms) is being recorded by the BBC & possibly streamed live on the web. Latest details on the Bristol wikiproject page above.— Rod talk 20:19, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Call of Duty- World at War online.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Call of Duty- World at War online.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 00:45, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
