My name is Dr Zuleyka Zevallos. I am an applied sociologist from Australia with a PhD in Sociology. I am also an Adjunct Research Fellow with the Swinburne Institute for Social Research, Democracy and Justice Flagship.
In 2007, I founded the Applied Sociology Thematic Group. This is a research group belonging to The Australian Sociological Association. In 2009, I established Sociology at Work (S@W). S@W is an international not-for-profit network of sociology practitioners, activists and students. We provide professional support, career guidance and we aim to lift the public profile of applied sociology and to enhance our esteem and collaboration with academics, industry and community groups.
My main research blog is The Other Sociologist, where I discuss issues of otherness with an international perspective. I also write about media and applied sociology. I am active across several social media platforms, including my Tumblr, where I also blog about popular culture, social causes and visual sociology. You can access my social media profiles as well as my academic papers, which are reproduced free, via my personal website.
I support open open access and public science, which is why I've decided to join Wikipedia.
I have researched and published in these broad areas:
- Ethnicity: social identities, culture, race, racism, second-generation migrants, multiculturalism, immigration patterns in Australia, refugees, Latin-American culture in Australia, social capital
- Gender and sexuality: femininities, Islamic sexuality, sociology of heterosexuality
- Sociology of religion: Catholicism, Islam, socio-economic mobility of religious communities in Australia
- Terrorism studies: suicide terrorism, counterterrorism, national security, political sociology, insurgencies
- Media: Internet use by target audiences, mass media analysis, social marketing, social media
- Interdisciplinary research: social modelling, social networks, social surveys
- Intercultural studies: communication, education
- Environment, health and safety
